“American culture lies to create the assumption that whiteness brings excellence. The truth is that our country’s standards for white people are so low that most of our problems—including the unrelenting violence against people of color—can be traced to those low standards.”
-Mitchell, “Low Standards”
This quote is so relevant today because the bar really is set lower for white people than it is for blacks. This lowered standard can be seen virtually everywhere, in pop culture, with Adele and Beyonce, in politics, comparing President Trump to President Obama, and even in schools, where black kids are on average suspended 4 times more than their white peers. This blatant racism that society has deemed okay needs to stop, to give blacks the opportunity to succeed and whites the opportunity to raise their own bar.
