MY LOVE OF THE DECADE (1920-2020)
1921-1930: L'AGE D'OR (Luis Bunuel) ~ A man and a woman are passionately in love with one another, but their attempts to consummate that passion are constantly thwarted, by their families, the Church and bourgeois society.
1931-1940: LIMITE (Mario Peixoto) ~ Three people sail aimlessly while remembering their past. They have no further strength or desire to live and have reached the limit of their existences.
1941-1950: UN CHANT D'AMOUR (Jean Genet) ~ Two prisoners in complete isolation, separated by the thick brick walls, and desperately in need of human contact, devise a most unusual kind of communication.
1951-1960: ANTICIPATION OF THE NIGHT (Stan Brakhage) ~ Imagine an eye unruled by man-made laws of perspective, an eye unprejudiced by compositional logic, an eye which does not respond to the name of everything but which must know each object encountered in life through an adventure of perception. Imagine a world alive with incomprehensible objects and shimmering with an endless variety of movement and innumerable gradations of color. Imagine a world before the beginning was the Word.
1961-1970: TEOREMA (Pier Paolo Pasolini) ~ A strange visitor in a wealthy family. He seduces the maid, the son, the mother, the daughter and finally the father before leaving a few days after. After he's gone, none of them can continue living as they did. Who was that visitor?
1971-1980: STALKER (Andrei Tarkovsky) ~ A guide leads two men through an area known as the Zone to find a room that grants wishes.
1981-1990: POSSESSION (Andrzej Zulawski) ~ A woman starts exhibiting increasingly disturbing behavior after asking her husband for a divorce. Suspicions of infidelity soon give way to something much more sinister.
1991-2000: BEAU TRAVAIL (Claire Denis) ~ Loosely based on Billy Budd by Herman Melville, it focuses on an ex-Foreign Legion officer as he recalls his once glorious life, leading troops in Africa.
2001-2010: LA VIE NOUVELLE (Philippe Grandrieux) ~ The story involves a young American who falls obsessively in love with a mysterious courtesan named Melania against the backdrop of a dilapidated Eastern European landscape. "Not a film like a tree, with a trunk and branches, but like a field of sunflowers, a field of grass growing everywhere." - P. Grandrieux
∞: WHAT TIME IS IT THERE (Ming-liang Tsai) ~ Hsiao-Kang sells watches in the streets of Taipei for a living. A few days after his father’s death, he meets a young woman who as it turns out leaves for Paris the very next day. He runs around setting all the watches and clocks in Taipei to Paris time.
2011-2020: JAUJA (Lisandro Alonso) ~ A father-and-daughter journey from Denmark to an unknown desert that exists in a realm beyond the confines of civilization.
