Philippians 4:13
How can I say, "I can't" when the Bible says, "I can do everything through him who gives me strength."
"It's rebellious, in a way, to choose joy, to choose to dance, to choose to love your life. It's much easier and much more common to be miserable. But I choose to do what I can do to create hope, to celebrate life, and the act of celebrating connects me back to that life I love. We could just live our normal, day-to-day lives, saving all the good living up for someday, but I think today, just plain today, is worth it. I think it's our job, each of us, to live each day like it's a special occasion, because we've been given a gift. We get to live in this beautiful world. When I live purposefully and well, when I dance instead of sitting it out, when I let myself laugh hard, when I wear my favorite shoes on a regular Tuesday, that regular Tuesday is better.
Right now, around our house, all the leaves are falling, and there's no reason that they have to turn electric bright red before they fall, but they do, and I want to live like that. I want to say 'What can I do today that brings more beauty, more energy, more hope?' Because it seems like thats what God is saying to us, over and over. 'What can I do today to remind you again how good this life is? You think the color of the sky is good now, wait till sunset. You think oranges are good? Try a tangerine.' He's a crazy delightful mad scientist and keeps coming back from the lab with great, unbelievable new things, and it's a gift. It's a gift to be a part of it.
What if, all at once, all the shabby, tired, used-up bodies and minds start to wriggle and pop, like they've been dropped into a deep-fryer, sizzling and dancing, transformed into motion? And something that has been deadened and distracted by the tension and noise of this world comes to life anew, wakes up and wiggles like a fritter in a frying pan, anointed, and taught to dance. Because we were made for motion, for arching up toward God with all the energy and passion of a thunderstorm, lightening slicing through a sleepy world to remind us that we serve a fast-dancing God, a God who set this world whirling and crashing through space so that we coulde live from our toes and drum out the pulse of a billion veins carrying lifeblood to a billion hearts, temples to a God that got his hands dirty making us from dust. Let's get dirty, in his name. Let's sizzle and pop in his name. Let's dance and shimmer and scrawl out our stories across the sky, like he taught us to. Let's echo his words, and let our lives speak those words: It is good."
Amen to that.
Thank you for your mercy, Father.
My vision, my life, my reality is being flooded with beautiful things; this body and this mind just haven't figured know how to receive them all.
"Use what you have, use what the world gives you. Use the first day of fall: bright flame before winter's deadness; harvest; orange, gold, amber; cool nights and the smell of fire. Our tree-lined streets are set ablaze, our kitchens filled with the smells of nostalgia: apples bubbling into sauce, roasting squash, cinnamon, nutmeg, cider, warmth itself. The leaves as they spark into wild color just before they die are the world's oldest performance art, and everything we see is celebrating one last violently hued hurrah before the black and white silence of winter"
We are still pilgrims on the way to our home. We are not there yet.
I want a life that sizzles and pops and makes me laugh out loud. And I don’t want to get to the end, or to tomorrow, even, and realize that my life is a collection of meetings and pop cans and errands and receipts and dirty dishes. I want to eat cold tangerines and sing out loud in the car with the windows open and wear pink shoes and stay up all night laughing and paint my walls the exact color of the sky right now. I want to sleep hard on clean white sheets and throw parties and eat ripe tomatoes and read books so good they make me jump up and down, and I want everyday to make God belly laugh, glad that he gave life to someone who loves the gift.

Love Recklessly
Haven’t spent much time on here writing about my thoughts but today I think they’re important to have written down somewhere. I want to remember how I’m feeling at this moment because I think it’s the first step in being held accountable for my part in all of this. Everyone else please bear with me.
It’s so simple and so complex at the same time: I’m ready for an example of an earthly love that will last. I know and experience the unceasing, never ending love of God in my daily life. I am abundantly blessed; that is not what I am currently struggling with. I am not asking for an earthly love to sustain me, really just a sign that there is love on earth the way God intended it to be. Not conditional love, not love that quits when things get tough, not selfish love but real earth-shattering, reach for the moon over the stars, silver screen movie kind of love. And yes, I do think it exists. Not that it just appears but that you have to work for it. I think most people get discouraged because love is something that takes work and effort and dedication. I think it’s sad that we’ve gotten to a point in this society where that kind of romance isn’t believable in real life. I want one for the ages. It seems so discouraging to me to see relationship after relationship suffer because of human weakness. A couple of weeks ago someone around me introduced the idea of loving recklessly. Doesn’t that sound exhilarating? To love even when the path gets steep. To love when times are tough and there isn’t an end in sight. To love through our selfish desires or lazy impulses that tell us giving up would be easier.
In the dictionary “commit” has a few different definitions:
1) To do, perform, or penetrate
2) To put in trust or charge; entrust
3) To place officially in confinement or custody
4) To consign for future use or for preservation
5) To put in a place to be kept safe
It should mean something to commit yourself to someone. It should mean you are willing to perform every action necessary to keep your love alive, it should mean that you have trusted someone with your whole self and that they have entrusted you with their whole self (this requires consideration) – their heart is now is your custody. You are agreeing to preserve your love for one another and consign it for the future, not just for the now. It is your duty to keep each other’s love safe and cherish it for the blessing it is.
Somewhere along the way love became something very disposable, something temporary; once lit only later to be stifled. I’m ready for a season of loving the way God loves us and intended for us to love one another: a perpetual, unremitting love. I’m ready for a season of deeper friendships and relationships, of successful marriages, of thriving romances. I’m ready for change.
I know the verse that always comes up when speaking on love is 1 Corinthians 13, because it is such a perfect example of the love we should all strive to achieve. Usually emphasis is placed on the first half of that passage; however what intrigues me more are verses 8-13.
“Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love”
I believe this verse calls us to love perfectly as God has loved us. It emphasizes the importance of love over all other things because all other things will lose their effulgence. It speaks on the idea that as children we have much more naïve notions of things than we have as adults. These notions pass away along with knowledge and language and prophesy but love remains permanent and eternal. We should be seeking that which is permanent and eternal and that search should be apparent in the way we interact with one another.
Let’s redefine love.
I absolutely adore this picture; so cute.
