the friendship paradox
This whole talk is worth a watch, but the most fascinating thing I came across is the explanation of the friendship paradox. The friendship paradox can be boiled down do this statement: your friends have more friends than you do. Sounds like everyone's worst fear at some point in life. Usually goes like this: home alone one Saturday, check the phone every half hour, no plans? How about now? Now? OMG. No one likes me. Everyone's out, having the time of their lives without me. They're all laughing at me. OR WORSE: they don't even realize I'm not there. They forgot me. I am forgettable. I AM NOBODY. Etc etc.
Thankfully, I can now appreciate a Saturday night at home. Beer, dinner, Netflix, SIGN ME UP.
