The Psychology of Vintage Dressing
The admiration of old clothes, also known as ‘Vintage passion’, came out with a substantial question, ‘Why vintage?’. Accordingly, psychologists have, then, started to ask vintage lovers in order to understand what makes such people like clothes from years behind and prefer to buy something that others would call an old fashion rather than attaining a modern one. One of the substantial reasons that explains the psychology behind vintage dressing passion is dressing up not only for warmth and comfort, but also for acceptance. One does not wear clothes today for psysiological needs as it used to be in the past. People now dress up to impress, attract and show a social and economic status. For instance, items of iconic brands such as Levi’s high waisted shorts, vintage Burberry shirts or jackets from Wrangler tend to get more attention from vintage lovers.
The fact that some clothing items have been already filled in by significant people who were received by the society in acceptance makes people tend to dress up similarly to them so as to feel safer. That being said, vintage clothes give the feeling of stability, security and acceptance more than normal clothing items do. Moreover, some vintage lovers prefer old clothes over modern ones to avoid the risk of new designs and enjoy the stability of being already familiar with vintage items.
The search for being different is another reason of vintage dressing fashion. High volume clothings created a chance of getting cheaper products when compared to the handmade clothing items but it also brought about a new problem. These clothes made everyone look like each other because of the high volume production of the same design. People who want to express their living style, character and taste through their choices of clothes prefer vintage dressing to feel more like themselves. If one is looking for a dress that is comparedly unique and more good-looking than others being worn at the same ball or party, vintage clothing would be a very good hunt for such purpose.
Another reason behind the vintage clothing is the sentimental value of the old clothes. Wearing the clothes that have been worn by your own parents or grandparents, hearing the stories of each clothing item gives the feeling of recapturing the past and the chance of having a special moment in a special age. Moreover, adapting these old clothes to your own style and reshaping them according to your size is quite cost-beneficial when compared to buying fashionable clothes which will probably be outmoded in next year.
Although almost all designers are thought of as creative persons, their creativity still has limits. Most designers would rather use some trends from old eras and reuse them in their collections. Such phenomenon is what some people would call “Self-repeatable fashion”. However, it’s very difficult to specify which fashions would likely repeat themselves and which wouldn’t. This ironic, but well known, fact stretches the interest in vintage clothes into further limits. Interestingly, many people would rather keep their old clothes instead of getting rid of them because they are well aware that the history and fashion do repeat themselves and these old clothes which look outmoded now could possibly be back in.
