How to match diesel engine and turbocharger?

Turbochargers are generally believed to boost engines in power and speed. What is turbocharging and its working principle? How does it affect automobiles? Let’s make it clear. Turbocharging, often used in automobile engines, is something driving air compressor with internal combustion engine gas exhaust. With the use of waste gas heat, a turbocharger can improve internal combustion engine power output. A turbocharger is often marked with T or Turbo in the back part of a car; namely, the car is driven by turbocharged engine. A auto turbo is varied in different models, such as TD04, GT1544, HX60 and so on, matching different engine types and car brands. The main function of turbo engine is to ascend engine air volume so as to improve the engine's power and torque, so the car will become more powerful. If an engine is equipped with a turbo, its maximum power will increase by over 40%. For a common1.8T turbocharged engines, its power can reach 2.4 L engine level, but fuel consumption is not much higher than 1.8 L engine. However, a turbo engine’s service time is usually not as long as ordinary engines due to increasing working pressure and temperature, and mechanical and lubrication performance will be affected too. Thus, there is still space for further perfection of turbo application on car engines. A diesel engine can match different turbochargers models? The choice of a diesel engine turbocharger is based on a diesel engine’s performance and a turbo’s speed, pressure and so on. Even if a TD04 turbocharger can match a diesel engine without turbo limit, the connection installation size could not be the same. Here are some basic requirements on different engine turbo match. 1.when a complete turbocharger pressure is loaded on diesel engine, it should meet diesel engine requirements of the dynamic performance, economic indicators. 2.The turbo keeps high efficiency operation in  in various diesel engine running conditions 3. It keeps smooth sustained long-term work. 4. Turbo compressor has no surge phenomenon. 5. It will has no speeding problem when diesel engine runs at the highest speed (rated speed condition) 6. Diesel engine exhaust temperature conform to specified requirements. 7. The structure parameters and strength of turbo diesel engine parts of should meet the basic use requirement in normal working when a turbo is replaced on the engine diesel engine. Turbocharger engine increase engine power output

From different forms of engine chargers, they are mainly divided into turbocharger (Turbo), supercharger and comprex supercharger. At present, the former two types are popular in automobiles. When it comes to a turbocharger, it is a kind of air compressor that compressor air  to increase engine air inflow, improve air density and boost pressure. With the use of engine exhaust from inertial impact, a turbo promotes turbine wheels which drive the coaxial compressor impeller that increase air flow into the cylinder to make turbocharging. When an engine rotates increasingly fast, exhaust emission and turbine speed will synchronous increase, and the compressor impeller make much more air into the cylinder. The increasing air pressure and density can burn less fuel accordingly. Generally, a turbocharger is the mechanical device that increases power output in same displacement. As turbo engine air intake is not a natural way, related turbo parts take ultra-high working speed  to make air pressure greater than atmospheric pressure. As a result, how to lower high temperature and excessive charging become big concerns. High charging not only cause negative effect on the piston compression fuel combustion, but also put forward higher requirements on cylinder processing and strength of such turbocharger parts as connecting rods, piston rings and so on. How to cool down turbos? The key is intercooler. When the air is compressed, it will produces heat in intake pipe and lower air inflation density; at the same time, it will give engine higher working temperature and may cause detonation cylinder in extreme conditions. Therefore, it’s necessary to make some improvement on intake and lowering air temperature, then a air radiator is in need. Its work the principle is similar to tank radiator - scatter high heat and pressure in small pipes for air cooling. Generally, an intercooler lower gas temperature from 150 ℃ to 50 ℃ around. In short, a complete turbocharger is advantageous in that it can not increase 20-30% engine power output and torque in unchanged displacement. It’s quite useful for diesel engine of small output, but it has turbo lag problem. Due to time difference between compressor wheel inertia and its instantaneous effect on accelerator, the time duration for rising engine speed means turbo lag time. Usually, a turbocharger comes into effect around 1500-2000 RPM. Turbo car drivers may have a strong feeling of looking up when they accelerate cars with turbo power.

How to prevent turbocharger oil leakage?

A big challenge for all nations in the world is how to reduce carbon emissions and improve fuel efficiency with same engine performance. The strong desire for fuel economy cars drive the development relevant technology. Nowadays, turbocharging is widely regarded as one of the most economic and most feasible "green" technology. Compared with traditional gasoline engines, the fuel efficiency of a petrol engine with a turbocharger increases to 20% while a turbocharged diesel engine's fuel efficiency tend to reach 40%.

Another main trend in automobile industry lies in rapid growth of turbocharger market in China. Some famous auto turbo manufacturers pay much attention to it. It's reported that HoneyWell plans to launch more than 100 projects on passenger cars and commercial vehicle turbocharged application, of which 20% projects are designed for the Chinese market.

In structure, an exhaust turbocharger is mainly made up of an exhaust-drive turbine and a radial compressor, installed at the two ends of the turbine shaft with individual casting housings. The main shaft is set within center housing, called bearing housing, which prop up the turbine shaft. The two sides of a turbo bearing housing are linked to the turbine housing and compressor housing are at the both sides of the center housing, connected with the turbo housing. There are 9 turbo parts which form the main structure of a turbocharger.

Turbocharger rotor assembly

It is the dynamic balance parts of a turbo, comprised of a turbine, thrust bearings, thrust collar rings, seal ring support, turbo compressor wheels and locking nuts, etc.

Turbo bearings Turbocharger is a kind of ultra high speed rotating machinery in high temperature. Such  machinery are often damaged due to improper installation. At present, the service life of 90% turbos can not reach fulfill expected use duration. One end or two end oil leakage is the one of the most common turbocharger problems.

In theory, the engine oil with normal pressure into turbo cartridge CHRA will turn into zero oil pressure through turbo bearings and just flow down back to the engine oil sump by gravity. In normal work conditions, there are some at air pressure at both ends of the turbocharger compressor wheels, so the engine will not flow from low pressure area to high pressure areas. What’s more, seal rings have the function of sealing gas oil. Even so, turbocharger oil leakage is also likely to happen without proper operation. Here are some common causes and preventive measures for turbochargers.

Long-term idling engine

If a turbocharger runs idling for a long time, certain negative pressure will be produced on back parts of turbine wheels and compressor impeller wheels, which may cause oil leakage within the turbocharger cartridge. Thus, it’s better to avoid idle running.

Impeded engine oil return ducts

When the turbo oil return ducts are deformed or blocked, it will imped the smooth oil return.
