Digital Apps for Social Care
For more in depth research I took a look at what was currently on the market.
My Health Guide
My House of Memories
MyChoicePad
App Inspiration
When thinking about layout and design in apps I found that dribble was the most helpful resource when coming up with my own design.
Healthcare App feedback 2
Overall the feedback I received for my app was met with problems with colour, They were seen as too strong and felt too cluttered with the colours being the main problem. With these feedback i will look to change the colour pallet before the final submission.
I was also suggested to add a navigation bar and keep all the font between 12-16px. Another change that will be needed is to add more content into the medication page to make use of the prototype.
Below is the work I submitted for feedback.
Healthcare App updated wire frames
From the feedback I received and with more research I found that if I included images of the patients it would be breaching privacy laws so therefore I had to rework a few pages as well as my brand as I was not happy with it. I went back to paper to help provide an update on how it will look before I create the digital version.
Vocal Care Digital Draft 1
This is the first draft of my project, this was mainly focusing on the layout of what my app will contain and how the navigation will work. i will look to add a nice colour pallet through the app and look to improve on my brand logo as I feel like i can do better and make a cleaner design.
Health Care app Wire frame sketches
For my healthcare I wanted to create an App that would focus on the social care aspect in healthcare. This apps main purpose is to help with social care workers finding information such as medicine, location, Doctor information for the patient they are caring for. The main aim is to provide voice recognition updates for the patient when the carer is not available at that time and make it easier to set up different activities for the patient.
Below are the steps I took when first coming up with the idea of the app Vocal Care.
Week 04 Lecture
In this lecture we were told about the importance of sketching and why to always begin our project on paper. The reason to start on paper is:
Iterate quickly
Paper is a low cost development platform
Its flexible and faster than Photoshop
It saves itself
It enables collaboration
Using paper to create wire frames is useful as it also requires fast thinking to jot down fast ideas and design techniques.
Week 03 Lecture
In this lecture were covered the topics:
AI, ML and your future
BHAGs
The Brief
What is ‘the news’, exactly?
Jobs to Be Done
We took a look at how Airbnb built an AI that turns design sketches into product source code
We took a look at ‘will AI take your job, which was a piece written by the BBC which I found very interesting. In this article the key points that were discussed are:
Exactly what is AI
Which jobs will AI steal first
Timeline: 15 key stops on the long road to AI
Explainer: How computers file sports reports
Rory’s blog: Why AI matters
Intelligent machines special report
One of the most interesting parts of this article was how taxi drivers could be the first to be replaced with AI in the future due to uber looking at replacing the human driver all together, As chief executive Travis Kalanic puts it: “The service would be a whole lot cheaper if you weren't paying for the other dude in the car”.
further along the lecture we were introduced to BHAG which is Big hairy audacious goal which is a business statement to focus an organisation on a single medium to long term organisation wide goal which is audacious likely to be extremely questionable but not internally regarded as impossible.
An example of BHAG
JFK: The moon.
Microsoft: A computer on every desk and in every home
Space X Colonizing Mars
During this lecture we then got our brief to design a digital product for the healthcare sector.
Week 02 Lecture
In this weeks lecture we took a look at more UX/US case studies as well as taking a look at the future of healthcare and wellness.
In 2014, government of Indonesia announced a universal healthcare coverage program, where Indonesian can get free-of-charge doctor consultation and medicines. As much as it is excellent offline, we would like to bring the experience online by creating an app that will not only support this program, but also facilitate every Indonesian to a much more simplified access to healthcare.
In this case study we took at look at the following:
Problems
Why is it Important?
Project Objectives
Base Theory
With doing qualitative research from several people about their current behavior when they are feeling sick or unfit, lots of responses form this including simply going to a nearby drugstore, describe the symptom to the staff and get a prescription free drug from them, if they felt the same a few days later without any changes they would go to the hospital. When this study asked these same people if that had any sort of healthcare app of their smartphone a shocking 72% said they didn't use a healthcare app and the majority said that they would go to the doctor directly. So the problems that comes with this are:
Long wait to get to hospital due to traffic of a busy city or town.
Long waiting line to see the doctor and/or the medicines had no effect and were a waste of time
The price for medicines
Now we ask ourselves why is this important?
Due to the healthcare being bad in Indonesia and that we are now in a digital era. This could cut out the idea of those three bullet points by simply using a healthcare app to help self diagnose and perhaps being able to see a doctor digitally to help ease the pressure off of doctor queues and a clinic etc.
The project objectives from this case study were to:
Create a one-stop online healthcare service in Indonesia
To invent a personal health-coach for daily activity
To digitize the medical records for each person
To facilitate government and private health insurance for everyone.
The base theory explains that when we try to combine technology with healthcare is that healthcare is very personal and there are many healthcare apps on the store that are yet to get a completely accurate verdict to a disease as most of them don’t focus on the user, but focus on the commerce side. A problem is that even an app that violates patients privacy when consulting with a doctor online.
This case study helped me when coming up with my own healthcare app as I have to take these privacy steps seriously and take into consideration the different levels. needs and wants of the app I want to create.
Week 01 Lecture
For the first lecture of 303 we were introduced to the new course for this semester. This involved taking an overall look at the module and an introduction to UX. We were assigned into teams for the first part of our module to help with the work load by combining all our research ideas and ideas for an app surrounding healthcare.
We also to a dive into design methods are healthcare which I will be researching throughout this semseter to add to my blog as research
IDEO Design Thinking
What is design thinking?
“Design thinking is a human-centered approach to innovation that draws from the designer’s toolkit to integrate the needs of people, the possibilities of technology, and the requirements for business success.”
TIM BROWN, EXECUTIVE CHAIR OF IDEO
a Great quote when thinking about design in healthcare:
How do you better understand who your patients are and then create an entire ecosystem of care? -Suzanne Gibbs Howard.
The requirements I will need to look for in my design is for healthcare and the importance around the needs of the people along with the possibility of technology I could implement into my design such as voice recognition.
Mindset Shifts in Healthcare:
Shifts To Value Based Care
Shift From Being Reactive To Proactive
Balance High Regulation With Experimentation
With healthcare moving beyond the walls of a hospital with have to ask ourselves new questions such as, what do we do about loneliness as it is much of a killer as smoking and diabetes. When we force ourselves into these situation of questions we then can design and lead to a better understanding of patients to help create a better ecosystem of care.
With health becoming this process of self exploration, this creates entry points for people into better healthcare offerings. With this shift from healthcare to consumer products it is helping everyone get a better understanding of who we are.
To explain the balance high regulation with experimentation point is that privacy and risk committees often block tools out of security control which can impact design and technology choices. We need to have high standards of privacy of course that goes without saying while making sure every new tool implemented is completely secure which gives the designers still more room to experiment with this idea when given consent to prototype.
Fonts of 2020
When trying to find the right font for my project it was very helpful for me to look at different sites to get an idea of a variety of fonts. I found this website that was useful when displaying and explaining the breakdown of said fonts. Showing the powers of fonts and how the strong and bold colours work well with some sections of content. For me personally I wanted to look our for strong and bold lettering for my style of project.
Week 09 Lecture
In this lecture we were joined by Big motive to explain to use how they use storytelling for projects in the big motive studio. As big motive put it: At Big Motive, human-centred design underpins every challenge we take on. We believe in radical collaboration because we’ve found that designing with people, creates alignment, acceleration and greater potential impact. Blending data analysis with deep customer insight, we work to create hyper-relevant experiences that inspire engagement, change and growth.
They were great on giving us advice on how to breakdown our project and different styles to use to help enhance the immersive project we will be creating.
Week 08 Lecture
In this lecture we took a quick look at eBooks and how eBooks are published which was a great lecture for me personally as it gave me a good idea on the final changes to my design I wanted to implement as well as how I would go about publishing my e book through adobe InDesign. We also were given a task during this lecture to quickly sketch out a storyboard which were made to be focused on the four steps:
Consider the minimum amount of steps or sections to communicate your idea
Once this is done start sketching the scene of the first step
When your done write a short brief description underneath each frame. A sentence or a few words will do
Evaluate your ideas by asking :
Does it make sense
What could be improved?
What isn't needed?
Whats missing?
Week 07 Lecture
For week 7 we had a guest lecture David Henderson that spent the morning with us to discuss the important of storytelling and how they use storytelling for the projects they create in the DHD studio
He discussed the team that they had which included logo designers, illustrators, interaction designers, developers, film makers and animators that all come together to create each story driven immersive prototypes.
He also discus in detail on how they apply their techniques on how to develop an immersive story through design. The stages the team go through on how they start off a design, then move onto the development stage then finally to the deliver stage.
Week 05 Lecture
In this lecture we focused on how narratives can be used in print and film. Throughout the lecture we explored four topics which are:
The Blurring of lines
Creating a World
The Power of Pause
Film Structure
The blurring of lines involved looking at the animated intros and how they can be used to tell a story by setting the scene. For example looking at the small animation before a Netflix movie sets the seen.
For creating a world we looked at the work by Simon Wild and Annie Atkins who designed assets in graphic design to be used in films like the grand Budapest hotel.
For the power of pause we took a look at how pauses can visually add suspense or calmness in a design. When researching the power of pause we took a look at the speech made by Liz Danzico. In this speech she discussed on how people try to smooth over silences and tend to try censor our um’s and ah’s out of a speech. She also details how it is important as a designer to value the white space that we tend to always fill. We then continue with speech to discuss what if we all become more comfortable with this pause to add something to our speech.
For film structure we took a look at the narrative story telling by Anna Dahlstrom. We also looked at narrative structure like the three act structure, Freytags Theiry and Dramaturgy and how we apply this to UX Design.
