Mira: I read that you’re, among some other things, a sports masseur. Marko: Among other things. Mira: And you’ve also studied Chinese medicine. Marko: Yeah. Mira: How on earth did you come up with that?

Marko: I did come up with it, yes, about 4600 years ago. We were at Sichuan province, hanging with the Yellow Emperor. Then one night, completely drunk, just started to stick needles all over that neighbor pig. And… oh well.

Marko: No, I think it came from having a combat sport background and such. And so it wasn’t something unfamiliar to me. And at one point I was having rather severe migraine and I had it taken care of with acupuncture. And it was ok and worked. So I got hooked on it a little, I wanted to learn what it’s all about. And I started studying.

Marko: I just graduated in February, licentiate in Chinese medicine, in acupuncture ...

Vappu: You sound like a yoga teacher. Marko: One of my hobbies is yoga, so... maybe something has caught on from there too. But this kind philosophical exploration has always been close to my heart.

Mira: What do you love? Marko: What do I love? Well… This will get pretty naïve now, but puppies and…and raspberry yogurt and… I don’t know. All that’s good.

Mira: The next one is pretty suitable to continue with. What do you dream about? Marko: Aaah, a hammock at the Bahamas

“I like all those small animals, kittens and puppies and animals like that. Those are great things. Yeah cats are really nice. I’ve had two cats myself, they have both passed away though.”

…about doing the dishes? “I dig it. It’s fun. It is soothing. It’s one of those things when others go smoke a cigarette, I can do the dishes or wash the laundry for example.”

…about the snooze-feature on alarm clocks? “The snooze-feature on alarm clocks is completely useless. I never use it myself. And nothing is as annoying as when you first wake up and turn off the alarm clock, and it starts beeping after a while. I don’t use any snooze-features, but rather lie on the bed until I have the energy to get up.

What is your main weakness?

Marko: That’s a good question. It’s actually something that every now and then and right now I am trying to find out. If I could do something differently or focus on something that is maybe pushing me off the course. It’s in my nature that I get interested in something for 2 minutes, 2 hours or 2 years and then I lose all interest. And I have to rekindle that interest, find it again. This is probably one of my biggest weaknesses – my lack of concentration sometimes.

Is there anything that you would never be able to forgive to another person? Marko: Probably, something like violence. Violence towards you or towards someone else? Marko: I’d probably find it easier to forgive violence towards myself than towards someone who is very important to me.

If you could name one song that could be your life anthem or portray your view on life, what song would that be, not necessarily your own?

Marko:  So like any song? There are so many. One of our songs called “Shallow”, that pretty much describes at least a part of me. It gives you the idea, like the chorus says “Glad the waters are so shallow, when the river runs so cold”. That’s something that I wanted to write in a cryptic way, that you have to think what it means. Another song “Roses” is also kind of autobiographical. But if you read any of my lyrics, you would need me to be there and tell you what I meant, so that you could understand where I come from. Otherwise it’s just you reading the lyrics and finding out where you come from.

If you were a superhero, what kind of superpowers would you want to have?

Marko: I would be able to fly, I would be able to heal anything, I would be able to walk through the walls, in other terms become ethereal, I would be able to read minds and I think being ethereal has also invisibility in it.

Did you ever think you might be on there one day? (there, as in being popular)

Marko: Well, there’s always that funny little bugger called hope nagging us to keep at it, making us think way bigger than we dare say out loud.

What were your early musical influences?

Marko: The earliest stuff is a blur of anything translated into Finnish (Finnhits) and jazz, classical, and more. Then came for us bands like Pink Floyd, U2, Metallica, Van Halen, Dio to name but a few, and that doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface…

What particular inspirations do you have behind the songs?

Marko: Late Goodbye

Would Asian values have any influence on your art such as Taoism?

Marko: I’ve always been fascinated by the orient. Taoism for one is very interesting and holds wonderfully practical ideas to contemplate. The pragmatist in me seems to be drawn to ideas with functional value, you know, stuff that makes sense, that works

Why do you sing in English?

Marko: We all grew up listening to music with English lyrics… So for us it was only natural. On a more personal note, my mother would speak English to us kids at home, so I came to speak the language from very early on. Just to put it on the table, English is by no means the only language we write music in.
