Peter nodded in confirmation as he went off to go drop his things off. When he made it to the dorm he emptied his bag of it’s books and papers onto his bed. It would be a welcome change of pace to just be able to sit around in relative peace with Marlene. He rummaged around in his trunk, picking up a bottle of vodka before digging around for a thermos. Nobody asked about thermos’s, but they did question large bottles of alcohol. Filling the thermos he tossed it into his backpack, along with two bottles of lemonade, and a bag of candy. Snacks never hurt anyone. 

As promised, around twenty minutes later Peter was trotting down the hillside towards the Black Lake’s shore. He watched the waves hit the sand as he walked out to one of the small piers by the boathouse, taking up post near one of the docked boats and sat with his legs dangling off the edge. It was only a few short moments of waiting before the pier creaked with another’s footsteps, and Peter smiled up at Marlene as he lit a cigarette, “And here I was thinking you’d just never come. A whole twenty-five minutes Marls? You’re gettin’ slower in your old age.”

Upon exiting the Great Hall, Marlene made a sharp turn toward the kitchens. The extravagant spread of sandwiches and chips had been picked dry by fellow students, and with the hour nearly up it appeared the table wasn't going to procure anymore food, otherwise she would've shoveled it all straight into her bag. ( Snacks were a necessity for boozy afternoons, you see. ) Tickling the pear - a peculiar lock which Marlene found hilarious - she entered the large room and was greeted by a house elf. Ten minutes later, the blonde found herself in possession of half a dozen cookies, a bottle of pumpkin juice, and a few ( slightly ) bruised apples.

She told herself she'd be on time, and she rightly would have, but it was impossible to skip by friends as she passed them. Lily wondered if any lost socks had been found; Greta confirmed their plans for later in the week; Remus to pass off the herbology notes she'd asked for; even her cat had demanded attention, that damn wandering thing. By the time she rounded into the boathouse, she knew she'd surpassed the time limit. "At least I'm not getting ulgier," she replied cheekily. Once her shoes had been carefully set aside, she fell down beside him, reclined on her elbows with her toes skimming the water. "Can you imagine? Slow and ugly? It would be an injustice, really." A pause, if only to laugh at her own arrogance. "On a scale of James to Sirius, how big is my ego right about now?"

Marlene was like going home after long days away from the comfort of your own bed and sheets. “Oh, so what are we waiting for?” she said and laughed.

Lily enjoyed Marlene’s optimism, even when the words coming out from the other girl’s mouth were not really believable. “You’re probably right” she nodded. The last thing she needed was a conversation on how things were going badly. 

She got up and grabbed Marlene by her hand. “Shall we?”

A sense of relief came over her as Lily didn't challenge the feeble excuse; she didn't think she'd be able to perpetuate it if asked to define 'propaganda'. "Absolutely," then quickly added, "but we'll have to move quickly. If all they're telling us is true, snatchers may try to take us away to their evil dungeon." Said as if a joke, not something harshly true, a smile followed. She then tugged her friend out of the dorm and through the crowded common room, until they found themselves out in the open hall. "Oh, and professors. They're bound to be patrolling the castle for wandering students, and I really wouldn't like another week of detention added on to my current one. It's a waste a time, you know."

"I have absolutely nothing to wear!" Marlene cried out, although the state of her dorm displayed the contrary. Piles of clothing were strewn accross beds and chests in what appeared to be a haphazard mess, but had been carefully organized. ( Summer dresses laid out on Lily's bed, winter ones beside them; blouses on Mary's, t-shirts laid over the paired trunk; too-short skirts on her own bed, pants draped over the spare. ) There were dozens of outfits, and even more individual articles. Anyone else would've called her mad for insinuating that she didn't have enough, but thankfully it was Greta there with her, and Marlene knew her older friend would never judge the desire for more clothes.

"That's it, I need an emergency trip to Gladrags. Or...or muggle London. Say what you will, but they really know how to dress." With a huff, she fell down onto the skirts.

The return of stolen classmates, along with the reopening of the castle, should've been received as good news, but Marlene felt more dismal than ever. Who would do such a thing! The horror of it all! A puzzle she couldn't solve, a secret she couldn't discover, she instead found herself moving; fingers drumming on near surfaces, feet tapping to a deaf rhythm, hair switching styles every dozen minutes. The students around her in the library had become irritated with her restlessness and sent her away - not without a few choice words from her, of course - and now she found herself wandering the aisles.

"Looking for something?" she inquired to someone probably as lost as she, eager at the chance to speak to anyone at all.

Peter offered a shrug in response to another mention of dragons, looking down at his plate of mostly eaten food when Marlene mentioned drinking. He glanced back up at her and then over to the chess game happening down the table, then nodded, “I mean, better than sittin’ here. That’d be great. Count me in.” Peter gave a smile to Marlene before he pushed his food away from himself. 

He got up from the table and grabbed his cloak where he’d left on the seat, shrugging it back on and leaning his hands onto the table. “You want, I can go meet you there. Gunna go leave my shit in my room and grab something. I’m sure there’s a bottle of something my room, right?” With a chuckle Peter was picking up his backpack to sling it over his shoulder. “Twenty minutes sounds good?”

"Fantastic!" Marlene sprung up from her seat triumphantly, one of those impossibly permanent grins lighting up her features. She did love spending time with her cousin - they could sprawl out on the fields, a bottle of booze between them, each with a cigarette, and relax the day away. It would be a relief from the boring routine she'd gotten herself stuck in.

"Good, because I'm fairly certain that I've drinken - drunken? - my supply dry. That reminds me, I'll have to restock at the next Hogsmeade trip." Slinging her bag over her shoulder, she began pacing her way to the entrance of the Great Hall. "Twenty minutes!" she repeated, and they both went off in their own directions.

Normally, Emmeline would at least try to fake a matching grin, going along with Marlene’s enthusiasm. And maybe once they were away from the castle, she might find it easier to do so again, but right now she was just too distracted and worried to manage it. “I might normally be the last person to say this….” She muttered, keeping her voice low and avoiding looking at anyone else for the time being, “But please get me as far away from here as possible for a bit.”

Marlene’s never ending enthusiasm was always refreshing, but now it seemed like it might just be Emmeline’s saving grace. Something to keep her from losing her head completely. “I trust you, Marlene. I just really need to get away from here.”

Compassion turned the enthusiastic grin to a softened smile. This castle had gone from a safe haven to somewhat of a prison, a place of nightmares, and it seemed everyone needed an escape. ( She made a note to bring that party up again with James; perhaps they'd soon have the chance to liven their classmates' spirits. ) "Hogsmeade it is," she decided on, and abruptly changed their direction to follow up the stairs.

"That's a nice sentiment, but never a good idea," she replied mischievously, an attempt to lighten the atmosphere. "The last time someone trusted me, he ended the night with a tattoo of a Pukwudgie on his arse - of course, the kind muggle had absolutely no idea what it was, but he did it anyway - and I was nearly arrested for public indecency. A story for another day, perhaps."

Three stolen students had been rescued - or, rather, found on display - the previous day. It should've been good news, she should've been relieved that they hadn't been killed, but their conditions weren't much better than if they had. Rumors swirled around the castle, relentless, since the return: one had mudblood carved into their arm, they said; another had their foot chopped off, or a hand; Mulciber cut a lock of their hair for his collection of victims. Some were more plausible than others, but the lot of it made her stomach churn viciously and she opted out of the day's meals, and the first two of the next.

After her last block of the day, only a few hours before dinner was to be served, Marlene could no longer ignore her grumbling stomach. She trudged down to the kitchens and asked for a piece of cake, but it sat untouched before her. Legs against her chest, arms wrapped around them, and chin resting atop her knees, she didn't startle when someone else arrived. A quick peek revealed that it was Regulus and she was pleased to see him; they'd hardly spoken since the year began, for a string of obvious reasons. "Hey there, Reg. Want to hear a joke? It's dreadful, but I'm sure you'd love it," she said, her words tired and slightly slurred.
