Benedict Arnold: he wasn't a traitor, he was always on the side of the British.

I don't know if you'd call that a con-man or a spy, but he was never on the side of the Colonials.

His first battle was the Battle of Ticonderoga, and the British surrendered without a fight.

At the Battle of Quebec, he and Montgomery decided that they would sacrifice their troops because their enlistment window was ending. Their troops’ contracts would be up, so they played poker with their lives and went "all in". They lost that battle.

I'm sure I'm not the first one to have said this though...

Benedict Arnold really liked having money, and was awful with it. He didn't give a shit about battle or war. He liked the power of purchase.

I’ve seen this point before and though I understand where it comes from, I vehemently disagree.

Arnold was for the revolutionary cause at the start. Not only is that a commonly agreed consensus among most historians, it is backed up by his actions and limited artifacts he left behind.

As for Quebec, Arnold is far from the only general in the war who’d gone this. A more famous example is Washington doing the same during the Trenton-Princeton campaign and he’s heralded as a military genius because luck would have it working out. Nobody would accuse Washington of being on the British side all along for that gamble. Though it is easy to argue it paid off for Washington and not Arnold, hindsight is 20/20. Arnold and Washington both had no clue whether or not it would’ve worked out at the end and had little other choice than to attempt it. Furthermore on Quebec, had it gone Arnold’s way maybe the Siege would’ve been more successful as it was Schuyler who delayed the siege for 2 months which slowed the initial momentum.

Arnold also was responsible for saving the entire northern theater of the war after the disastrous invasion of Canada. During the October of 1776, Arnold’s ragtag navy on Lake Champlain was face to face with the British’ far superior naval force. Arnold would be pursued by the British navy for two days before burning his own ships at a shallow part of the lake, now named Arnold’s Bay, which brought the British advance to a halt. Now, had Arnold not done that then the British could’ve continued down the Hudson and cut off the northern theatre of the war which would have surely brought the war to an end. However, because the British were unable to advance that year, it allowed the Continental Army to strengthen the defenses in the north and set the scene for the victory at the Battle of Saratoga in 1777. Saratoga would secure French aid for the colonists and that would ultimately lead to the decisive victory at Yorktown.

Arnold didn’t go on to betray on a whim. Though it caught many off guard, the perfect storm had been building for some time prior to 1780. He had been mistreated by the Continental Congress, having been passed over a promotion for less arguably competent generals like Gates and Lee for purely political reasons. He also suffered financially because he funded so many campaigns out of pocket—like the Quebec expedition. He’d been given a faulty map which had said he and his men would get to their destination in 20 days or so when in reality it took 45. The final nail in the coffin had been falling in love with the loyalist leaning Peggy Shippen who had most definitely helped sway his wavering belief in the cause.

When it comes to historical analysis of controversial figures such as Benedict Arnold, it is easy to fall into the trap of hindsight. Just because he went on to betray eventually doesn’t make all of his work at the start of the war for naught. Arnold was one of the Continental Army’s best field generals at the start of the war and his devotion to the cause at the start had been undeniable. That is not to say that Arnold was a saint, he was a man of the late 18th century who is subject to all the flaws from his time. He was prideful and overconfident but not with malicious intent. Though he is not any saint, he also is no devil.

I used to have the “aim high and keep your expectations low so you don’t get disappointed” mindset but I realized that if I’m going to be disappointed anyways then I might as well keep my expectations high and be a cocky little brat while I fail miserably.
