so i finally watched last week’s episode and all i have to say is
-so we’re just gonna have meredith run away and see nothing about how she’s dealing with derek’s death, except for some weird parallel between her and ellis that doesn’t even make sense? we’re just gonna kill derek and time jump away from all of the actual damage it caused for everyone?? that’s what’s happening? cool thanks
-thank god for miranda bailey
okay so i said i wasn’t going to make a post about it but i lied so here we are. i know that grey’s anatomy’s sole purpose is not to make the fans happy and i know that shonda always says “it’s not real” which is true, but the way we feel about this show is real. it’s up to the writers to do whatever they want with it, but they can’t expect us not to care and be upset about the direction this show is going.
first of all, i am not upset that patrick dempsey left the show. if he wanted to leave, that is his choice, and it’s perfectly reasonable that he just wants to do something else. i’m upset with how he left the show. at this point it would have been more believable and more real if derek and meredith just got divorced. and i never thought i would say that, but they have grown apart in this past season and if the writers wanted to explore the story that would come out of that and what it would mean for both characters, and what we would learn about them through that storyline, that would have been fine with me. really anything that didn’t involve another plane crash or car crash or ferry crash or bombing or shooting would have been better than this.
i don’t know why, but sometime around season 5 the writers became obsessed with killing everyone on the show. my guess is that probably they took the success of the bomb episode in season 2 to mean that the best way to get ratings and keep viewers engaged was to have these huge dramatic natural disasters or catastrophes. but to me, at least, that wasn’t why i watched the bomb episode at all, or the whole show for that matter. i watched because i loved the characters, and the ways that i got to learn more about them were really well done. the fact that meredith put her hand on a live bomb tells you so much about her right there. and then the rest of the season was basically dedicated to her being in therapy and examining why she did things like that, and it was a huge step forward for her character. that was the point where she became someone to root for. even george’s death (which i will never be over) at least somewhat made sense for his character, pushing someone out of the way of a bus is just classic george. and they spent an episode dealing with it.
then, after george’s death was the shooting episode. sure, it was dramatic and exciting, but we didn’t really learn anything about anyone after it. no one grew as a character, the people that did die no one really cared about, bailey was hugely affected but after that one episode, the writers basically went right past it. they didn’t stop to examine how it affected the characters, and to me that was always the best and the most realistic part of grey’s. i know that in real life people die suddenly and for no reason, and in real life, people get shot and in plane crashes and car crashes, but all of those things don’t happen to the same person.
it just seems like this show that uses to have these amazing complex characters that was such a character-driven show is now just a series of things that happen to people, that has no real effect on them or on the story, but are solely to get ratings. meredith grey used to be such an interesting character and we learned so much about her in the first seasons, but in the past few seasons, all i’ve learned about her that’s new is that she has really really bad luck. and the worst part is that this used to be my favorite show, and now i don’t even want to watch it anymore.

karma. one way or another it will leave us to face ourselves. we can look our karma in the eye or we can wait for it to sneak up from behind. but karma will always find us. the truth is, as surgeons, we have more chances than most to set the balance in our favor. yet no matter how hard we try we can’t escape our karma. it follows us home. i guess we can’t really complain about our karma. it’s not an affair. it’s not unexpected. it just… evens the score. and even when we’re about to do something that we know will tempt karma to bite us in the ass… well, it goes without saying. we do it anyway
