Early morning #Venice #Italy So beautiful!
Sunrise over #Venice. Good morning!
Sunset over #Greece.
The Heyoneia Gate at the ancient harbor of Piraeus was built to guard the harbor from land incursions. The harbor outside here is where the battle of #Salamis took place almost 2500 years ago against the invading Persian Empire. Had the Greeks not won that battle, Western civilization as we know it would not exist.
The fort in the harbor in #Naftplio #Greece like many ancient ports held a chain that was placed across the harbor in times of danger
The current fortifications on the site of the ancient kingdom of #Naftplio were completed by the Italians in 1714 with the help of a French architect who promptly sold the plans to the Ottoman Turks in 1715 to allow them to capture it
#EasterDinner in #Greece consists of lamb or lamb -- with a delicious side of #GreekSalad #HappyEaster
The town of #Naftplio was rebuilt after the Greek War of Independence by the young German king who was appointed by the British, French, and Russians. He later moved the capital of modern #Greece to Athens
The Russians, English, and French helped #Greece win its war of independence against the Ottoman Turks, so this is a memorial to the fallen French mariners and soldiers who helped recapture the ancient town of #Naftplio
Another Ottoman Mosque in #Naftplio #Greece
Old town #Nafpoli, the first capitol of modern #Greece is built in the German style because the first king appointed after the war of independence was German.
The ancient acropolis of #Mycenae was continuously occupied from the late Neolithic until the 11th century BCE, after the decline of the Mycenaean civilization.
In the 12th century BCE Agamemnon was the main king of the Mycenae. Helen of Troy was given to Menelaus, Agememnon's brother, by her father the king of Sparta at the age of 12, supposedly of her own accord. But she was cursed by Aphrodite to be unfaithful, and Paris of Troy fell in love with her, causing the Trojan War. (Short version, leaving out much other meddling by the gods and the quarries of rich minerals that were at stake.)
