The current fortifications on the site of the ancient kingdom of #Naftplio were completed by the Italians in 1714 with the help of a French architect who promptly sold the plans to the Ottoman Turks in 1715 to allow them to capture it
The town of #Naftplio was rebuilt after the Greek War of Independence by the young German king who was appointed by the British, French, and Russians. He later moved the capital of modern #Greece to Athens
The Russians, English, and French helped #Greece win its war of independence against the Ottoman Turks, so this is a memorial to the fallen French mariners and soldiers who helped recapture the ancient town of #Naftplio
