You lay on your couch with some dumb sci-fi movie on. It was all about robots and AIs and cyborgs. It used to be one of your favorites actually. You watched it so many times that you could walk into the kitchen to get a snack and keep repeating the lines even though you couldn’t hear it.

But now it’s just something to put your eyes on while the obscene noise of glass hitting each other bangs in the background.

Punctuated, of course, by a babbling blonde saying some nonsense to you.

You are proud of her though, for throwing your alcohol away and not taking it home with her.

You roll over onto your stomach and your arm falls off the side of the couch. Calloused fingertips brush the carpet and you close your eyes, just as your phone vibrates and rings.

The ringtone signals Theresa. Once she heard what happened shed been checking up on you like mad. But even with her you could barely talk. Even thinking about what happened in Houston hurt.

You feel a hand go through your hair.

And here you were, and here he is, making fucking jokes like the goddamned idiot he is. "Are you fucking kidding me?" You said, voice raised. "Are you shitting me? You're goddamned lucky you're not one hundred percent dead, you're fucking lucky I don't kill you right now, you sonuva bitch." You keep running your hand through his hair. You missed the feeling of his stupid gel, even though it was probably out of his hair right now. You missed the smell of his shampoo on the back of his shirt. You missed him.

You sit on your couch with your pink laptop adorned with cat stickers and you finish up your video game and you lose and that's ok and then you play again and you curse off the boss level and you eventually turn off your computer and get something to eat.

And you even surpass the need for a stiff drink and you make yourself a grilled cheese and you burn one side but that's ok because you tend to like burnt edges and the taste of charcoal, it's your favorite.

And you end up watching a movie again and you try for a comedy but it ends up having some stupid meaningful part in the middle and you grab a box of tissues and you have a cryfest and put on some Nicholas Sparks and sob out loud and get it all out.

And you call Dirk once. It goes to voicemail and you hang up before you can hear his answering message.

And you text Jane and add so many winky faces you think your head is going to explode and the mixer is calling your name so you make another grilled cheese and take an Advil.

And you call Dirk again but you feel needy so you hang up on the first ring. You think about going out to a party or something but it's too early for anything good and you take a nap and fall asleep to MTV with your cell to your ear like a pillow.
