You limped into the living area, muttering under your breath, cursing the very air James Buchanan Barnes breathed. You threw your bag onto the couch as forcefully as you could, wincing when the motion tweaked your sore shoulder and the ribs that were broken on that side of your body. You hobbled into the kitchen, bent over because you could breathe better that way, narrowing your eyes when the rich sounds of laughter rang out behind you.

“Hey, there you are. You took off before the debriefing.”

You grunted, opening the refrigerator, gritting your teeth at the pain shooting through your body.

“Hey, you alright?”

You nodded, gritting your teeth even harder.

“Fine, Captain.”

Steve’s eyes widened at the way you spit out his name.

“Hey, come here.”

You couldn’t help the gasp when he laid his hands on your shoulders. You slowly turned to face him and he sucked in a breath.

Tony smiled as the little girl ran to him, dark, wavy hair loose and hanging halfway down her back. He knelt down, catching her as she threw herself into his arms. He closed his eyes as he embraced her, standing up and settling her on his hip.

“What’s up, Pheebs?”

She shrugged a shoulder, brushing some of her wild hair from her face.

“Mama thinks I broke the angel that sits by the TV.” “Did you?”

Her dark eyes widened.

“No!” “Phoebe Grace Stark, you get your little behind in here right now!”

Phoebe buried her head in Tony’s neck and he didn’t even try to hide his smile. He walked into the living room with her still in his arms, the smile widening when he saw his wife standing in the middle of the floor with her hands on her hips.

“Oh, no. Don’t even try to run to Daddy to play this off. You are in big trouble, little miss.” “I didn’t mean to!”

Phoebe’s voice was muffled from where she still had her face in Tony’s neck. He met his wife’s eyes and you shook your head.

“Mom?” you asked in a quiet tone, opening her bedroom door. The thought of her dead scared you so much. She was an addict, have been for almost all her life, more so after her third boyfriend came into the picture. Finding her dead was your number one fear, and it haunts you every day of your life.

Opening her door more, you stepped inside, the strong scent of rotting eggs and urine filled your nose. The room was dirty and messy, something you could never get fully cleaned. No matter how many times you cleaned the sheets, washed the windows, and plugged air fresheners, the room always smelled like this.

Walking through the metal detector, you grabbed your things at the end of the conveyor belt. You’ve been to a lot of prisons in your day because you were a lawyer, but this one was by far the most secure one. This wasn’t like any other prison because it housed the most dangerous criminals you’ve ever seen. The one you were assigned to was Loki Laufeyson, and he was in here for first-degree murder of his entire family.

When you first heard o the case, you immediately wanted to jump on it. Being the lawyer of someone like this could really get your name out there, plus it could give you a chance to find out if he really did it or not. Before this crime took place, you have never heard of Loki or what he stood for. After, you did a hell of a lot of research to know everything there was to know about him.

The one person you were most proud of was your daughter, Nikki. Having her 12 years ago was one of the best things that happened to you even though her father never came back. He didn’t even show up at the hospital to see his daughter being born. All her life, it’s only been the two of you, and you never needed anyone else.

It was definitely hard in the beginning since you worked two jobs just to keep a roof over yours and hers head. You didn’t have any money for a babysitter, but luckily, your best friend was always available to help. Walking into the store, you looked around until you spotted what you came in here for. Maneuvering through the racks of clothing, you approached the baby section before going straight to the unisex section. With being only 3 months pregnant, you didn’t know if your baby was going to be a girl or a boy. It didn’t matter because you would be happy with either, but you knew your husband would love a girl.

With the holiday being so close, you had to rush to find presents for everyone you loved. Chris was the hardest to shop for, but you knew the one thing he would love is to find out you were pregnant. So far, it has been easy hiding your belly from him since he has been working late a lot. He didn’t have a clue that he was about to be told he was going to be a dad, and you thought a cute way to tell him was baby clothes.

Christmas is definitely a stressful time of the year, but there is one thing that will always top that: your husband on deployment. He wanted to join the military to support you and your three kids, and while it was a good decision, it was also a bad one. Robert and Travis were both in college, but on their way back home to spend Christmas with you and Rachel who is only 8. Your husband entered the military 8 years ago, right before Rachel was born. He thought it would help with the money issues you two had been having.

While it did clear up all debt you two had, it didn’t clear up the hole in everyone’s hearts when he went off on a deployment. Every time he left the house, you were afraid something was going to happen to him. He was an active member which meant he worked on the field. Mistakes happened all the time, accidents even more common. Every day, you woke up in fear because you’d get the call of having two police officers at your door because something happened to your husband.
