Comic Con 2022: “Meeting” Sebastian Stan

I’m a very depressed person, and I find comfort in different things such as movies, tv shows, games, and music. Marvel has really been a big comfort for me and Bucky Barnes was that character that really stuck with me. If anyone knows me in real life, they know that when I like an actor, I tend to watch everything they’ve done. I became a huge fan of Sebastian Stan because of his movies and how he treats and socializes with his fans. He’s very open about mental health and I find that super important.

So when I found out, last minute, that he was coming to New York City Comic Con, I immediately was beyond thrilled. I had a ticket for Saturday sadly, but my friend got me a ticket for Friday and I was so thankful. I sold my Saturday ticket and bought a photo op since the autographs were sold out. I was freaking out about it because I suffer from body dysmorphia and I was not happy to be in a picture but it was the only opportunity I was going to have to meet Sebastian Stan. I have three kids, so I had to make sure my mother could watch them, I had to book a hotel, and set up my train schedule. My anxiety was high. Then all of a sudden autographs came back up for sale and I begged my mom to loan me the money and she did. I was so excited and happy and just I can’t explain it. When you have bpd you tend to really idolize people, especially people who make you feel happy. I’ve done this all my life.

I knew he was going to have plexiglass for the photo ops but I didn’t know he’d have it for the autographs. Which is fine; we all need to feel safe. I just think it got in the way of having that personal connection. But better safe than sorry; he has filming to do.

The day comes and I’m thinking about what’s going to happen. What I’m going to say? What is he going to say?

Long story short, he didn’t say anything. He didn’t look at me nor did he talk to me. I never expected a full on conversation because there are A LOT of people in that line, but I did expect a hello especially when I said it to him. The fact that he ignored my existence really fucked with me. Not only with the autographs but during the photo op. I wanted to cry and yeah I did a little bit because I spent a lot of money and I just wanted acknowledgment. Isn’t that the point of these things?

I heard from people that the con over booked him and I can totally understand the frustration; it just sucks that my experience was so heartbreaking.

I hope, if there is a next time, that when I meet him, he’ll be in a different state were he can communicate a little better because this really did break my heart.
