I always found that exchange between May and Coulson so interesting.

Coulson is looking at May with the puppy eyes, and the way he delivers the line is not accusing or bitter. He is just so happy to have his best friend back for a little bit, and to talk strategy with her.

But the way May takes it, her facial expression in the scene, hint that she feels guilty. She thinks Coulson will begrudge her for taking time off, for leaving him while he struggled to come to term with his missing limb, for leaving the base and Shield. We know May tried to have a normal life and couldn’t, so she herself might feel like what she did was wrong and now she feels like she can’t just come back and pretend everything is fine. Although, Coulson would welcome her with open arms (and more puppy eyes).

I do wish we had gotten a scene where they talk about this after May is back full time. The first few episodes of Season 3 focus heavily on everyone’s feelings and mental health and after the action picks up that goes out of the window of course 🙄
