Books I’ve just read - Safe: On Black British Men Reclaiming Space | Edited by @mostlylitpod Derek Owusu. Twenty writers share their truths and perspectives on being a black male in Britain. The anthology is varied, it shined a light on depression caused by a struggle for males to see who they are, forgiveness, father figures, education and sexuality. Last night at Hampstead theatre, for The Phlebotomist. In a future not too far, we’ll be part of a ratist world obsessed with our genetic profiles.

The first half of The Phlebotomist was surprisingly full of laughs and the second half was very alarming. The dystopian future created by writer Ella Road, felt far too real for me. I was so freaked out, I’ve lost a few hours of sleep.

The Phlebotomist is on till 20 April. Definitely worth a watch, be warned it may keep you up at night!

The most memorable and hilarious scene involved Loki and a goat. Books I’ve just read - James Baldwin’s Go Tell It on the mountain. Baldwin’s first novel inspired by his own childhood experience of his religious community. The novel uncovers the shame, sin and doubts which the Grime family have endured on their path to righteousness. My heart ached for John Grime, at just 14 he is willing to do just about anything to gain his father’s love. He hasn’t realised in the eyes of Deacon Gabriel Grime, John is seen as the “bastard boy” not good enough for his love. I was frustrated by Deacon Grime, he was blinded by his need to be a righteous person he forgot to do the basics. I found great similarities between Elizabeth Grimes’s character and Baldwins character Tish from If Beale Street Could Talk. I’ve convinced myself I know what happens to Fonny in the novel. I’ve just read Nick Drnaso’s Sabrina, the first ever graphic novel to appear on the Man Booker long list. The novel explored the grief, shock and conspiracy theories surrounding the disappearance of Sabrina. I should have known this wasn’t going to be a graphic novel which I would enjoy, but I was curious to find out what the fuss was all about.
