“It’s a Hogsmeade weekend. Are you going to let me, looking this good go alone?” Marlene teased, looking amused. She had been in the castle for too long. At this point, the squid could have promised to attend with her and she would have accepted. She needed to get away from her brother and professors’ expectations.

“Heh. Sirius would probably be the dog if anything.” Howard laughed. Placing his hands on his hips, he glanced around absent-mindedly. “Maybe we should find some place to put him until we can find the owner? If he has one, that is.”

“The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb,” Marlene quoted, “I think that means I should join a cult. I would probably be a good cult leader. Not a member, obviously. I couldn’t blindly follow orders like that. I would end up lopping someone’s head off.” She had succeeded in pulling Mary off the topic at hand.

“You know that’s what it doesn’t mean,” Mary sighed exasperated. She wasn’t daft, she knew that Marlene had been purposely steering them away from their prior conversation, but also her best friend’s anger had dissipated over Mary being tripped earlier, so it was a fair trade off in Mary’s opinion. “Besides, you would be a terrible cult leader.”

“No, you’re probably right. McGonagall is strict, but not string-you-up-by-your-thumbs strict. And I can’t imagine Dumbledore allowing anything of the sort.” When Mary wiggled her thumbs, Alice looked down at her own. She held her hands out in front of her and shuddered.

“Okay, then it seems to be decided! We’ll talk to Professor Sprout and then to the Herbology Club at our next meeting,” Mary said brightly, leaving the Topic of being hanged by thumbs in the past. ”I hope the club likes the idea,” she said earnestly. “I gotta go, but want to come with me to Sprout’s office at lunch tomorrow?”

“You’re welcome.” She chuckled at Mary’s comments about having a mean voice. “I am sure that your future children would not need to be scared. They would most likely be as calm and kind as you are. I am sure a gentle voice would be perfect in raising them.”

“I hope so, but I also hope it’ll be a long time until I have to worry about that,” she laughed with Violetta. "Believe me, I’m not that calm and I’m not that kind either,” she claimed seriously. After all, how kind could she be if she generally assumed all Slytherins were untrustworthy... that included Violetta despite the pleasant conversation they were having.

Regulus had to bite the inside of his cheek to keep from smiling at the Gryffindor’s “news”, but he gave her a grateful look as she settled near him. “Thank you, for that— although, I’m not certain that Gudgeon will feel the same,” he said softly, smirking a little at his textbook and not looking up. “I’d thank you for my Quidditch team, too, but I personally prefer him undistracted—keeping it fair seeker to seeker, and all that.” He quickly shut his mouth. No doubt she found his talking obnoxious, and he hadn’t meant to actually say that much anyway, not when he had so much work to do.

A breathy laugh left her at his comment. “Galvin probably won’t even notice them. I don’t think he notices anything that’s not Quidditch related when he’s focused on flying.” It was when he mentioned about his own Quidditch team that she looked over at him, seeing who it was she had sat with. Her mouth formed a small ‘o’ in surprise as she realized it was Regulus Black. She made it a general habit to avoid Slytherins these days, voluntarily sitting with one wasn’t something she normally did. It was almost as weird as Mary talking about Quidditch players like she knew anything about the sport. “I don’t think you have to worry about him getting distracted,” she assured Regulus, wiping the surprise off her face, as she contemplated trying to look for another empty table.

October 5, 1976 // Hallways

Just coming back from Quidditch practice the exhaustion was written all over Frank’s face. At least it was the good kind of exhaustion, the one that meant that he had worked hard and would wake up the next morning feeling it. It gave him some kind of sense of accomplishment as he made his way back to Gryffindor tower until he caught sight of another student, one who seemed to be struggling with something. Although he couldn’t tell what Frank made a detour and headed straight to him – his innate sense to help pushing his exhaustion momentarily to the side.

Weeks ago Mary and Alice had talked about putting up botanical decorations around the castle. The herbology club had decided on testing out one hallway, to see how the students would receive it. It really wasn’t a surprise when Peeves was seen making a mess of the place, tipping over a few flower pots and generally displacing the greenery so it looked like a mess instead of the beautiful arrangement it had once been. Mary was able to calm down some distressed honking daisies (really not the club’s best idea to bring the noisy plant indoors) and had been in the process of trying to untangle vines from around a suit of armor when a voice sounded behind her.

“Please, just a bit,” she smiled at Frank, gesturing to the tops of the suits of armor where the vines were knotted, “I can’t reach that high and I left my wand in the dorms.”

“Please,” he started, as the third years continued their chatter. “Some of us have work to do, can you please take it ou—”

They kept right on chattering, ignoring Regulus completely, and he slumped back in his chair, resigning himself to another afternoon of so-called library quiet.

Rumours was not something that Mary participated in lightly, and making up one was one she never did. However, desperate times called for desperate measures, and those loud 3rd years were taking up valuable library table space. Instead of trying to explain to the girls that the library was not a social meeting point, she decided to skip that headache and go straight to baiting them away. “You know, I heard Galvin Gudgeon is looking for someone to volunteer to time his laps around the Quidditch pitch,” Mary told the group of gabbing girls. Chairs skidded across the floor as the girls vacated their seats and ran out of the library. Mary slid into one of them wearily. “I can’t believe that actually worked,” she muttered to the boy across from her, not really paying attention to who it was as she pulled out her school work.

“Apologies,” he had not meant to surprise her - in fact, he had not even realised that anyone else was occupying that little corner of the library. “You seem a little… tense.”

She took a steadying breath before answering, “I’m not.” Her words sounded curt, not at all indicative of someone who was relaxed. She rolled her shoulders and tried again, “I’m not tense, I’m fine,” she insisted, picking up the book she had knocked over. If she was honest, the presence of pure-blood, Slytherin, seventh year, Lucius Malfoy certainly wasn’t helping to keep her from feeling tense.

James bit down on his lip, nodding, holding his hand over his mouth, trying his best not to laugh. “You’re so cute when you flail. I can’t help it.” Raising his eyebrows, he looked down at her. “Okay, MacDonald, you’re somewhat aware. Yes, yes, they can. Those who have completed their training at the ninja school of Ireland are.”

It was refreshing whenever James was around. He seemed to be the only one of her friends that didn’t treat her with kid gloves since the incident. It was nice, it was helping her feel like her old self. Mary rolled her eyes, “Cute? Yeah right, I probably looked like a terrified emu or something equally strange, you do it laugh.” She sighed, “There’s no ninja school of Ireland, you made that up.”

Rita thought back the scandal of last year, but decided against her better judgement and said nothing about it. “So far so good. Chasing stories, causing drama, you know, the usual.”  Rita glanced down at her arm, which was slightly red and puffy, though it could easily have been just from her paranoid scratching. “Oh. Um, maybe that’d be best. That way you can describe to Pomfrey what that fucking plant it.”

Mary had to stop herself from telling Rita that she shouldn’t be proud of causing drama, she doubted that she could make the aspiring reporter agree with her. Instead she said, “Sounds like you’re having a busy year already.” Taking out her wand, she careful crouched down to slice a leaf off the bush, picking it up carefully with a piece of scrap paper she had in her pocket. “Better yet, we’ll bring her it,” she said, showing Rita the leaf.

“It is nice to have someone responsible around though.” Violetta stated with a smile. “It helps me out a ton because I would have not been able to stop them in time.” She chuckled a bit at the mean voice comment. “I don’t think a mean voice would suit you too well. I like your voice how it is.” Her smile grew wider at the compliment. “Thank you so much. My parents and I were absolutely thrilled when I was chosen.”

“Happy to help,” Mary shrugged. She laughed at the obscure compliment about her voice. ”Thanks, but just think how handy a mean voice would be! I could part crowds that are hard to get though, probably stop peeves from throwing water balloons at me, even scare any future children of mine into behaving.”

“She did it last year just before OWLs. She wants to be sure that helping out doesn’t interfere with my grades. It isn’t as if she’d send me out if I showed up more often.” Miriam said with a smile as her face turned serious at Mary’s question. “Oh. I’m sorry you’re still having nightmares.” Her voice was softer and her brain was churning a mile a minute, “I think so. To try at least, you’re probably quite right about her being overly concerned. She cares so much, but it sometimes comes out rather harshly. I could do that for you.”

“That’s kind of her, to make sure you put your studies first. Besides, you deserve to have more free time on your hands,” she insisted. She knew of Miriam’s hardworking nature, with working so much in the hospital wing the girl probably hadn’t had any time at all to herself. Mary’s posture relaxed instantly when Miriam agreed to try and get her the potion. She still fidgeted with her fingers as she asked, “And you won’t tell anyone? That I’m having nightmares? Or trying the potion? Not even Marlene? If she hasn’t already figured it out I wouldn’t mind not worrying her with this.”

Mary’s hand went to her neck to fidget with a necklace that wasn’t there anymore, a nervous habit she hadn’t lost despite losing the necklace. “Did I?” she asked, her voice a little high, “I didn’t mean to, or if I did it’s just because I think he should be important to you, someone that you can to when in trouble. He is your brother after all.”
