How To Study For A Test
Study Tips Part 1
I know that we all want to cram in all our studying last minute by memorization, but all that’s doing is getting you an A you won’t deserve. The whole purpose of the material you’re learning is for you to understand it, not for you to use for an easy A. Here are some tips to make studying a little less painful and a whole lot more easier.
1. Before You Dive In
Collect your material
Bottled water
Calm music such as coffee shop or Indies Rock
Colored pens
Headphones (optional)
Gum or scented markers
Note cards
Highlighters
Sheets of Paper (Lined, copy or notebook)
2. Feel refreshed
Make sure you have had a hot bath/shower, brushed your teeth, finished your chores, or any other assignments. When you are studying, you might think of what you’ll need to do later and that will distract you from actually understanding and knowing what you are studying.
3. Find a Cozy Spot
Look for a cozy and TIDY desk or table. You want to be able to have enough room for your supplies and for you to write. If you have a messy spot, you’re just going to confuse yourself. Think of yourself like a camera, if there are too many things in the picture, you won’t have one thing to focus on.
4. The Actual Studying
Find notes you wrote or a friend wrote, a textbook, or anything related to what you are studying. Studying methods vary on what you use.
If you are using notes
Get a sheet of the paper you have and rewrite the notes in a specified format. Formats help your brain organize information. I will have an easy one up soon but for now, highlight your titles, divide the information in columns, and make sure your information relates to the title. Don’t rewrite the notes word for word, write them in a way that’ll help you remember. Use annotations, little pictures. word schemes, color schemes, and abbreviations.
If you are using a textbook
skim over the chapter(s) you are on and tab and/or highlight the important bits. After doing this, grab those important bits and write them the way I stated above.
If you are using the internet
I’d prefer that you don’t but if that’s all you have, then try printing. If you still can’t, take notes on what the online version says. Notes are your best friend if you take them properly.
5. Flashcards
This is where the gum and scented markers come in. When trying to commit things to memory,AFTER UNDERSTANDING THEM, reminders work best. When writing your flashcards, use scented markers to write them in. On the day of the test, I know it sounds weird, but smell your markers/cards. The scent will jog up your memory and you’ll be ready to go! It’s the same thing with gum. Chew your gum while creating your flash cards and chew the SAME gum on the day of the test.
6. Review
After you are done with steps 1-5, review EVERYTHING. Don’t spend to much time, just spend 10-15 minutes skimming over everything. After that, I’d wait 4-6 hours to review again to make sure your brain obtain most of it. For the things you are still iffy on, review them more in depth and soon you’ll know this material like the back of your hand. Also Review the days going up to the exam/quiz/test and the day of the test. Try reviewing with a friend if you can
7. Relax
Once you have this material down, follow The Three R Rule: Refresh, Review, and Relax. Right now, you should relax. Do what you would normally do and try not to think of said test or stress out. Chances are if you followed these instruction, you’ll do fine. Now just go eat some strawberries, watch Netflix, and get a good long sleep tonight!
You never apologized to me for hurting me, but I apologized to you 12 times for being angry about it.
