The Calendar of the Boiling Isles!

A mistake needing to be rectified! I’ve realized that I haven’t posted about the Calendar in Titan’s Blessing here on Tumblr! So buckle up and get ready for some juicy world-building!

“The history of the Boiling Isles is a muddled and confusing one. After Emperor Belos’ claim and making the Isles into an Empire, much was lost. We know for certain one thing. The years marked A.C or After Covens, denote the time since Belos’ reign. Anything before, or known as the Savage Ages, are marked as B.C Before Covens.”

There are 10 months in a Boiling Isles Year, also called a Cycle. Days are also called Rhythms. Proper documentation of the date goes as such: 5th Rhythm of New Callus, 52 A.C. On average there are at least 36 days in a month. Because the Isles are quite dangerous and unpredictable, until they reach maturity (21) children announce their age as how many summers they survived. 

“You both are sixteen summers, are you not? And I’m sure you’re able to snag some Palistrom wood from the Plant Coven with your parents’ money.” -Eda to the Blight Twins in Chapter 15

Celestial Alignment and the moon also take an important role when it comes to certain holidays and celebrations as well as the effects of magic. The moon in the Boiling Isles is also called The Titan’s Eye. As the story is told every year on the final day of The Week of Celestial Observation, the moon is the Titan’s Eye, gouged and thrown into the void after an act of deception from the Titan’s Sister, Hel.

Each rotational cycle is 10 days. Meaning there are 10 days between each New Moon. The phases are also named differently, it goes as so:

Birth Eye=New Moon

Young Eye=Waxing Crescent

First Gaze=First Quarter

Hooded Gaze= Half-Waxing Gibbous

Blinking Eye (Closing)=Full-Waxing Gibbous

Full=Full moon

Blinking Eye (Opening)=Full Waning Gibbous

Tired Gaze=Half-Waning Gibbous

Last Gaze=Third Quarter

Dead/Old Eye=Waning Crescent

Now lets move on to Months!

New Callus (36 Days-Winter)

“The Cycle of a new year begins anew. Old bonds wither away or strengthen. New ones are formed. New Callus can also be considered a month of rebirth, where many witches seek forgiveness to go into the new year with a clean slate. The Rhythm of Reflection falls on the end of the last week of this month, encouraging Witches to seek out the ones they have wronged to make amends.”

Prior to Covens those who specialized in what we now call Abomination Magic, were called Conjurers.

Also known as Necromancers.

And before the Coven System, goop was not synthetically made in a cauldron, it’s literally the dead cells of the Titan. They could use this Goo along with Healing and Oracle magicks to raise the dead.

It’s simple with animals, but for raising Witches and Demonkin it’s different.

They just can’t snap their fingers and raise a goo glued skeleton, during the times of The Old Ways, Witches could choose to be buried with their Palisman, and while the Spirit passes on, the Palisman stays to guard their Witch’s body.

The Palisman as we know is connected to A Witch’s magic and in turn a part of their soul. Respectfully, the Conjurer and corpse that’s being controlled by their Palisman duke it out in a battle of wills and power. If the Palisman believes the Conjurer is strong enough it relents and allows their Witch’s body to be used.

The way Conjurer’s work is also why there’s specific burial rites! If a Conjurer connects and raises a Witch wrapped in their Witch Wool cloak embellished with their Remembered Name, the fight between them will be exceedingly difficult…

About Alchemists. It’s a combination guild of Potioneers, Smiths, and Healers, yes? How would Smiths and Healers work within the context of the overall guild? Because I’m assuming it would be everyone knows a little about each profession in order to join/consider themselves an Alchemist. Or is it a few who are specialists within the guild and the overall guild is the business.

So like the smiths are making the tools for potioneers, the healers are working with patients to establish what exactly their treatment plan is going to be for their clients. But also perhaps cataloguing and tracking how their potions are affecting the body since I assume they can do that more easily than a potioneer asking to describe what is happening.

Or! Or is it a cross training situation where it is expected for you to be able to do everything I described above as an individual? If that makes sense

We haven't gotten into work order and case endings yet! When I type up that lesson hopefully it'll help you understand the sentence structure a bit better!

As for your question you are correct on the first point! The Alchemists Guild consists of all three of those specialties, yes. The Guild is known for progress. They are like minded individuals whose magicks feed off and support each other. The Smiths in the Alchemist guild craft unique brewing tools for the Potioneers. The Potioneers in turn create or experiment on new potions with them. And the Healers work in tandem with their medical knowledge and insight.

Thats just one facet of the guild.

There were three different branches that had a Witche's main specialty at the forefront, with the two others backing them up in some shape or form.

Potions with the Alchemist stamp are well sought out but scarce as Potioneers understood, like their Healer brethren, their brews were meant to help all. So, unlike the Potion Coven, there was no monopoly or means to take over others when it came to selling. One may be better at brewing certain elixirs than others. It is a shared effort.

As for Healers, you are spot on for their assessment. While brewing is meticulous it can be chaotic at times. So a Healer with their logical mind is the balm and steady hand to a Potioneer's rare frenzy (The Spark). Tracking the effects of new brews, comparing how they can weave a spell that helps and enhances the effects. A Healer with an Alchemist pin on their robes ensures even the most wary Witch that this Healer will assist in whatever ails them.

So, there's medical progress and brewing to new heights. The Smiths within the guild? They build.

Chiseling wards into stone with care, rising a solid foundation from The Titan with determination, and molding heat not only from the ground below but the sky above to assist with healing and brewing. Smiths forged the environment where the Guild can thrive.

Remember Rachis Pass? The large encroaching spinal bridge of the Titan? It is said that the Smiths within the Alchemist guild built the pass during the ten hottest days on Sun's Smite. Never pausing or resting, being supported by their fellow guild members potions and soothing healing magic to whisk away fatigue.

In short and in human you can think of Alchemists being akin to a group of mad (ethical) scientists. They take their craft to the extreme and more often than not it can yield beneficial results to Witch kind down the road!.

It's also a very exclusive club to say the least. As each branch has their own specific tests in order to be accepted into the Guild!

As for leadership it consists of a council of three. One Smith, One Healer, and One Potioneer. The Grand Alchemist is chosen from one of these three and the title is rotated every six years.

The Old Ways: Potioneers 🧪

Klí! Let’s talk about Potions and the Witches who brew them in Titan’s Blessing!

As we all know in TB!ToH there’s the Coven Way and The Old Way for each “school” of magic. The Old Way is considered Wild Magic, and while it can be sectioned off into specialization, there’s no rigid conformity of how to cast like in a Coven.

Druids mix Plant-Beastkeeping-Construction magic.

Seers mix Illusion-Oracle-Healing

So on and so forth. There is no one type of magic when it comes to The Old Way.

“The Nine Bright Hues” are bull#£<!

However, when it comes to Potions The Old Way is rooted in one aspect.

No magic.

Yes you read that right, true Potioneers do not use magic whilst brewing. No spellcasting or circle summoning, as doing so absorbs the ambient magic from the brewing elixir and dilutes it.

Because of this, when the Potion Coven was established, there was an immediate monopoly on who could brew and how it was distributed.

“Potion Spells” were created, glorified telekinesis to assist in potion making and praised as multitasking! Now you can brew on auto pilot, “safely” at that too. However it was soon found that a healing tonic wasn’t sewing wounds quickly as it used to. Some Witches and Demonkin who had ailments by curses found their usual elixirs stopped being effective as well.

Thus, the Healing Coven comes in. With both Covens working in tandem along with botched Magic and Brews you get something similar to the American Healthcare system.

Ineffective and made to keep you sick.

True Potioneers get their hands dirty, stained with ink from writing notes and nose hairs singed from the fumes of innovation.

Potioneers who brew The Old Way have their elixirs and potions be more potent and effective. There’s no shortcuts or half-assing. Brewing is an art form and not many are cut out to be hunched over a cauldron for hours on end, ensuring each reagent is cut or sliced precisely.

Even the type of cauldron and stirring rod they use is important as different metals and materials can change a potion drastically.

But in the end it’s worth it, for a true Potioneer can create nearly every spell equivalent that’s casted by hand with a potion. An impressive feat. It’s even said that some casted spells came from the potion first.

It wasn’t!!! I’m sorry to keep yall in limbo and waiting 😭. The last update was just before I started paramedic school and that took up a year of my time. Then I went straight into my fire Officer classes after to be eligible for one of two different promotion test which I just recently took! School and work has been on the forefront!

Luckily the next test isn’t for another few months so with no looming test or application deadline I can get back to working on my pride and joy that’s Titan’s Blessing 🙂‍↕️

For those still learning, Verre here just thanked me for my work! Lets fix up the phrasing a bit and translate my response!

Zho and toj are pronouns. Zho is our 1st person pronoun: I, me. While toj is 2nd person: You

To denote these nouns in their possessive form: Mine, your, his, hers, theirs, ect. You use the possessive determiner: vach. It is placed and attached as a prefix to the pronoun.

Me -> zho

Mine -> vach'zho

You -> toj

Yours -> vach'toj

He, she, they -> vǔ

His, hers, theirs -> vach'vǔ

Moving on to the other words! Kuhm is "Thanks!" Zho ïm kuhm is a more formal "Thank you." as it literally means "I give thanks." But between friends and family using Kuhm is just fine!

Still sticking with me? Good! Last two words to translate ate tol and jüz

tol is both a noun and a verb! It means work (noun) and to work (verb). Fun bonus tolɔïdh means worker!

jüz is a preposition and translates to: for . Prepositions are words that show the relationship between elements in a sentence. They can express relationships of place, time, direction, and other abstract or logical connections.

Now that we have all out words together lets look at the sentence again!

Kuhm jüz vach'toj tol! <- Boom!

Now lets get into my reply!

Zho ǂihɔïz vach'toj ǂikuhm!= I receive your thanks!

You might see something different here and thats the prefix: ǂi attached to our two verbs, hɔïz and kuhm!

ǂ is the prefix for the perfective aspect of a verb.

It is also the distinct 'click' that's in Old Tongue! ǂ- (or ǂi- when the word begins with a consonant) indicates that the verb has ended by the time in discussion. I responded and acknowledged Verre's thanks.

Zho ǂihɔïz vach'toj ǂikuhm is the "You're Welcome" in Old Tongue!

Titan’s Blessing Sneak Peek!

Meet Saix!

I shared Saix on the hellsite (Twitter) but never here! Currently he’s the Spirit bonded to Boscha as Rehan is attached to Gus. Saix was born on the Left Arm, his tattered clothing a hint and indication of what you’ll find Witches in that region wearing. As always @urbanbirdbud brings to life the copious amount of lore and ideas I have in my brain with their art! So let’s dive in!

On the left is Rehan, I’ve talked about him before! He’s a couple of scrolls down on this account. To the right is his best friend (crush) Saix!

Saix was born and raised in the Left Humerus! Known for its towering Mesas and hot sands! Through his clothing you can get an indicator of what the individuals wore over on one of the hottest sides of The Titan.

Light and loose fitting clothes are worn for protection from the sun and bitting sands. And if you look closely at Saix’s garb you’ll see Rune Chains stitched around his sleeves! It was a common practice. And these Rune chains aren’t like the others…read aloud they’re in Old Tongue! A Weaver well established in their craft made these. On Saix’s left sleeve it reads: ǂǔschuh•eng•mib

Translated it is: Cold•Cool•Breeze keeping Saix’s attire cool like the fresh cold sheets on your bed at night!

Unfortunately, like Rehan, Saix is one of the unfortunate souls that was part of the Conquest of Hexside. Thus in the aftermath his soul was trapped within a crystal ball for “Oracle” magic.

Like all Spirits that are imprisoned, their personalities features are withered away and stripped, forming them into droning mummified ghosts.

But, once roaming free, their form shifts back into a somewhat recognizable form. For Saix he is wroth with anger and rage, wanting revenge for those who wronged him and his classmates.

“With the spirit named Saix, his form carries anger. The aura he emits is loud and blazing, Luz is positive she can feel the heat even with the space between them. She can make out tattered robes on the boy’s body. His face was covered by an encroaching skeletal mask, its similarity to King’s skull making itself known to Luz.”

And so here we stand, the finale of the Hexside Arc approaching and within arms reach. Will the Hexsquad finally free Rehan, Saix, and their fellow classmates? Will Boscha come to her senses? Will Eda finally throw out her week old Apple Blood that’s been fermenting on her bedside table? Who knows! But you’ll find out soon!

Did you draw the Titan’s Blessing maps by hand? They look so cool and detailed, it must have taken forever.

Yup and thank you! I mocked up and drew everything in a map making tool called Inkarnate. Its an amazing website for creating all sorts of maps for stories or TTRPG!

I started the maps with the Right Arm, then as I completed each region I was able to "cut" a section from the edges that connect to the other body parts.

Like here for the Right Forearm. You can see the edge from the Humerus. I draw out the base shape first. I also Scrounge the Internet to get as close to a viable reference for Papa T for a general shape.

Then from there I shape the body part! Each Region was a fun challenge! I also think of the biome and terrain. The right arm consists of cliffs, hills and forests from what we've seen!

Finally I add the details! Names of locations and geographical landmarks. Along with shading and fun lore tidbits through the small quotes you see on each map!

Then we rinse and repeat!

The Skull was proably the hardest region for me! Took me a bit to get the shape down!

Almost there...

Boom.

Time wise mapping the entire Titan took me about 3 months or so! Taking breaks in between and what not. I love doing stuff like this so when I focused on one region I was determined on finishing it!

Now I'm in the process of adding MORE to the maps, they're interactable on World Anvil! You're able to zoom in and pan the image. And I'm adding more POI with more lore connecting to the numerous articles this big old TB!ToH Lore Bible/Wiki is going to have!

So keep an eye out!

Old Tongue Lesson: “What’s Your Name?”

Greetings! It’s been a minute since we’ve had a language lesson on here. And now that you all have a nice updated interactive dictionary, as well has a guide on the phonology of Old Tongue, we can have some fun!

But let’s start simple, where most language lessons begin!

How to introduce yourself!

Below you’ll find a quick greeting between Eda and Luz 👇🏾

“Kaklí Eda!”

“Klí thu’thekǂ. Üw mi tojeth aru?”

“Zho miu ïmu Luz!”

Let’s break it down!

Luz begins her sentence with: Kaklí, it means “Hello!” in Old Tongue and it’s commonly shorten to Klí or “Hi!”.

Eda responds: “Klí thu’thekǂ. Üw mi tojeth aru?”-> “Hi little witch, what are you (To Luz) called?”

“Üw mi tojeth aru?”=What is your name?

Luz: “Zho miu ïmu Luz!” -> “I was Given Luz!”

Remember, in TB!ToH Witches refer to their birth name as their Given Name or a Chosen Name (mïr for Chosen in place of ïmu which is Given). Luz responds accordingly. Now on the flip side if Luz wanted to ask for Eda’s Remembered Name she would ask:

“oǔp mi tojeth shüu?”-> “How are you (To Eda) Remembered?”

In turn Eda would Reply👇🏾

“Shü zho 𝗞𝗮𝗳 𝗖𝗵𝘂̌𝗸ǂ 𝗻𝘂̌𝗷.” -> “Remember me as Woman of Owls.” (or The Owl Lady in the Common Tongue).

And there you have it! The barebones of saying yellow and introducing yourself in Old Tongue! Hoped you enjoyed this little linguistic lesson from a conlang nerd!

Hi! I just want to know before I start reading, are you still writing Titan's Blessing? I noticed the last update was 2023. I'd love to read it, but y'know... I've been burned before. Just a precaution lol. Either way, I LOVE the worldbuilding I've seen so far!

I am! 2024/25 has been a busy year for me! Right now Im studying for my promotion exams for Lt. in my fire department. 2024 I was in paramedic school, finished early this year and went straight into Fire Officer class, hadn't had much time to think or write about ToH! But yes, TB is my baby and I'm determined to finish her as well as this big old World Anvil project I have to accompany with it! Matter of fact I'll be dropping the link to Old Tongue Grammar and Vocab as well as an interactive, searchable dictionary in a few here! So keep a look out for that! Because I wanted to use them in a project but the only font I can find is this one (Owl House Sans Serif RegularVersion 001.231True Type Font linked on OwlHouseFandomWiki) and as far as I can tell it's missing at least 2 characters (ng and zh). It's genuinely awesome that it exists. I can work around those letters. But I still wanted to ask if you could guide me to a full set? Thank you in advance

Hi! I’m a new follower. I saw your atlas of the Boiling Isles on AO3, and I love the lore and detail you included!

I was curious whether you've considered creating an atlas for the Demon Realm as well, similar to how we have maps for the North and South Poles. It would be a big help for my supplementary lore fic, I will credit you tho. Basically, the Northern Isles would be the Boiling Isles but more Gothic, mystical, tundra environment, windy, and Wiccan-based...

I imagine the Isles could be located to the south, as some areas are warm. It makes me wonder if the North Pole or Northern Hemisphere could feature "freezing oceans" as a contrasting environment. I'm currently writing an alternate universe story, based on a big question: "What if the children of Evelyn and Caleb had found out about abt Belos' true identity sooner and the daughter left with a sizable portion of the Isles' population to the North Pole with other family members while the son and Evelyn stay behind, thereby splitting the family in two, Eda would descend from the son's lineage btw."

Anyway, I hope this doesn't sound too rambly...

To answer your question, yes! I have plans for other Atlas', specifically for Hel, Papa T's sibling in TB. There are other Titan corpses scattered around the globe, Hel being the closest one to our Titan. However, due to the Empire, Trade is scarce and contact is at a minimum. So currently we're keeping the focus to our main Titan for now!

But I've mentioned before that just how Papa T's blood created a portal from North America, the other Titans blood may have connections to other Earth continents, influencing their cultures and developments. Some may have better connections with their mirrored reality while others may not! In due time!

Marz, how would the word "Titan" in Old tongue be? (it's not on the dictionary eep)

That is on purpose *wink*. The word "Titan" in Old Tongue would technically be Papa T's Given Name. And we are waysssss off for any more TB!Titan lore!

There's also some cultural nuance for it too. Each region of the Boiling Isles have their own descriptor for the Titan. In the warm caves of the Pelvis, he is referred to as: taǔlwüm zhawmɔïdh-The First Crafter/Smith.

And if we go down aways to the Archipelagos, He is known there as: nuh chok'anzof-The Strongest Anchor. Mainly referring to their homeland when out to sea. At least, when they used to be able to sail beyond the shores of The Titan.

However there is a general derivative mentioned in one of the Atlas blurbs. T'khan can be used as an indirect reference to Titan. T'khan means Land in Old Tongue. As Common was introduced and translation lost to time, T'khan (Correct Pronunciation)-> Tikhan (improper pronunciation due to loss of glottal stop and warping of vowels from English being weird)->Titan (Common).
