James suppresses the urge to frown at the mention of her show. Ever since finding out that she cheated on him with someone who worked with her, he’s been avoiding any mentions of it. It may all be water under the bridge at this point, but it didn’t make it hurt any less just the same. “Well, I definitely understand having to keep work details under wraps, but I hope they didn’t write you off. But if they did, I’m sure you’ll find a new project. You’re talented, shouldn’t be too hard for you.” He decided to shift the focus away from that and onto something that wouldn’t completely sour his mood and their night. “How’s everything been going with Peyton? I know it was a little rough at first but she seems to be a little happier than when we first separated.” He thought back to that day in the park with the four of them when Peyton was in her spiteful phase towards her mother and he had to finally have a talk with her about it.

Halston was mentally kicking herself for mentioning the show. Part of her wished she had never done the show in the first place now. She had often wondered if she had never did the show, her family would probably still be together. She bit her lip. “Umh well. I mean, after everything happened, they just decided it would be better to not have to deal with the drama so yeah, kinda did get wrote off. But it’s whatever.” She shrugged. “You’re right though. I’ll find something new and it’ll be refreshing to be doing something new and not be reminded of everything.” She nodded. “It’s a slow process. I mean everything is now. Which is hard cause you know I’m not the most patient person ever. But I think we’re okay. Like she doesn’t ignore me anymore. And she asks me to take her shopping so that’s exciting.” Halston smiled.

“I don’t eat a lot of homecooking when the kids aren’t here. Unless I go over to someone else’s or have enough time, that is.” He sat across from her at the table. “It’s hard to do a lot of things for just one person.” He nodded his head. “Made me realize that I may not be as independent as I thought I was when it came to doing certain things.” Although they’ve had their ups and downs before where he’s temporarily moved out of the house, this was the first time that he’d really been on his own outside of being away for filming or something along the lines. Getting used to the quiet of his house and the emptiness when it was just him took some getting used to. “But enough about that. How’ve you been? I know we haven’t really talked about our own lives and careers in a while.”

“Yeah, I mean my family pretty much made me go over to their house for awhile to make sure I was eating and stuff.” She shrugged. “But yeah, especially since I haven’t really been on my own since we started dating and stuff.” She said. “Yeah, I mean it’s nice to have the help sometimes.” Halston took a bite out of her food. “I’ve been okay. I mean, you know slow process and stuff. But can’t really say anything, but everyone keeps thinking I got wrote off of Orville.” She shrugged.

“Uh, both I guess.” He commented as he grabbed the plates and nodded towards the table as he went to set them down. “I don’t get to cook anything really unless the kids are here. And like I said, since you haven’t been over yet, I thought it’d be a nice way to kill two birds with one stone.” As much as he loved his new house, he was grateful for her company for the evening. Without the kids or friends over, it gets kind of lonely with just himself to fill the huge space.

“I see.” She said as she walked to the table and sat down. “So you don’t eat when the kids aren’t here?” She teased. “No, I get it. It’s hard to cook for just one person.” Halston bit her lip. “Well there you go.” She smiled at him. Halston was definitely glad to be spending some time with him. If she wasn’t working she would be with her family, but now with her sister in college, she just felt more lonely.

“Thanks.” He said as he closed the door behind them and escorted her into the kitchen. “Hopefully it tastes as good as it smells.” He grabbed the wine bottle and the glasses and filled them both. “Thanks for coming over by the way. I know I kind of texted you out of nowhere, but I’ve been wanting to do this for a while.” James admitted with a small shrug. “I figured now was as good a time as any.”

“No problem.” She said. She followed behind and then put the stuff for the cupcakes on the counter. “Oh I’m sure it does. You always cooked good things before.” Halston smiled. “And you can’t go wrong with wine either.” She said. “I mean, yeah it was kinda random, but I had nothing going on, so why not.” She shrugged. “You have?” She asked. “What the cooking or having me over?” Halston looked at him and took the glass of wine.

Changing out of his sweats and into a simple t-shirt and jeans, he headed back downstairs to finish up cooking. After all they’ve been through within the last year, he thought it’d be nice to make one of her favorite meals as a treat. Once everything was plated, he grabbed some wine glasses from the cupboard just as the doorbell rang. He couldn’t decide he was more nervous or excited about having dinner together for the first time in ages. He kept his fingers crossed that it would all go smoothly and tried to remain as positive as he could about everything. “Hey,” he greeted simply once he opened the door. “You look great.” It wasn’t an over-the-top compliment, but he did mean it. He always thought she looked great regardless of what she wore. “Come on in.”

Halston bit her lip as she waited for him to answer the door. It was still kinda weird for her to have to be waiting outside his house, when they used to share a home together. She looked down at her feet and tried to push that thought out of her head before he answered. “Hi.” She smiled once he opened the door. Halston was surprised by the compliment and blushed slightly. “Oh thank you.” She said and followed him inside. “Oooh dinner smells delicious.” She grinned.

For the first time in over a year, James was able to look at and speak to Halston without instantly being reminded of the infidelity. It had taken a while, but he was finally at a great place in his life and ready to move past that low point in their marriage and start fresh and he figured there’d be no better way to do that than to have a simple dinner. He’d spent most of the year between filming getting his house to feel like a home and with the kids not with either of them for the night, he decided to break out his newfound cooking skills for the both of them. Checking the timer on the stove, he quickly ran upstairs to change before Halston arrived.

Seeing the texts from James asking her out for dinner made her extremely giddy. She was almost taken back to when they first started dating and would text each other for dates. Once Halston had agreed she couldn’t stop getting flashbacks of when she was a teenager. Halston had been extremely hard on herself after the whole thing happened. It had been a long, hard year but she was starting to feel like her old self again. She had decided to just go with something casual to wear-blue jeans and a black,v-neck shirt. Halston got the stuff to make the cupcakes she promised to make and her purse, and headed over to his place. She texted him once she arrived to let him know she was there and waited for him to answer the door.
