Here’s my Owl Post pinch hit drabble for the lovely @pineau-noir​ 💖💖!! It was such a pleasure to write this little bit of fluffiness for you, Leah 😘

In the spring of 2008, Harry bought a ring.

It was more of an impulse buy, really. As everything Harry tends to do is. Draco had been living with him—not officially—since the previous Christmas. Turned up on the doorstep of Grimmauld Place, a calm, snowy Christmas Eve night with an Ogden’s in hand and a wrapped present and a blush he pretended he didn’t have, and just never left.

He was messy. Still is. Kreacher’s been in his element ever since he moved in. Draco leaves clothes flung over the chair in the bedroom and cups in the sink and rings of water around the toothbrush holder at the sink and Harry loves it. Loves him, but he’d known that for a while. Long before Draco appeared on his doorstep. Long before their first kiss a few months before that. A kiss far softer and sweeter than Harry had imagined it’d be when they finally did.

But Draco said it first. And when Harry said it back a few days later, stunned into silence at the time, Draco told him he knew—because obviously he knew; “I can read you like a book, Potter”—and they fucked on the kitchen floor.

It took two years from the point of Harry realising he loved him to say it.

Harry held onto the ring almost just as long.

He’s no good at that sort of stuff. Talking. Feelings. Draco’s better. Much. He hides it behind barbs and spikes and humour, but the reading goes both ways, and Harry always knows what he’s not saying and what he is.

Harry wanted it to be perfect. He planned dinners and walks along the Thames in starlight and holidays to exotic places. All those things you’re supposed to do, he did, but it never felt right. So, he waited.

Draco says it first and Harry’s not surprised.

It’s Christmas 2010, and they’ve been tangled up in bed—touching and kissing and laughing in that sleepy way they do—for so long that there’s no real time for presents now, before they have to get to the Weasleys. Draco’s lying behind him, fingers trailing Harry’s forearm and making him shiver, before he entwines their fingers and holds them up.

“You know. I reckon you’d look pretty good with a ring on this finger, Potter.”

Harry’s not surprised but his heart races anyway. “Oh?”

Draco’s voice is full of mirth and affection. “Reckon I could pull it off too, come to think of it.”

Harry’s not surprised but he thinks his heart might burst.

Draco’s lips press to the back of his neck, to the dip in his shoulder, and fingers tighten around his own as Draco murmurs into his ear.

“Why don’t we try it out with that ring you’ve got hidden over there?”

Harry laughs. Burrows his face into the pillow. “Bastard. How long have you known?”

There’s more kisses on Harry’s neck. Arms tightening around his waist. It’s warm and safe and real and Harry wants to stay like this forever.

Draco’s voice is a sure murmur in his ear.

“I’ve known for years, Harry.”

It’s not what Harry meant. But it’s more. Everything, really.

“Yeah. Me too.”

More specifically that is Carl Larsson with one of his 8 children.

He came from a extremely poor and abusive background but worked his way into fine society, where he fell in love with fellow artist Karin Bergöö, and his works shifted to painting his home life.

OMFG I used to work at Carl’s house which in now a museum in Falun, Sweden, and now his art is on my dash! 

I could tell so many stories about this family, but to sum it up they lived the definition of what we would call a cottagecore life where both Carl and Karin worked as artists in their dream house that they designed and built together. It really was an artist’s home built with pure love, and also a big contrast to what a typical Swedish home looked like at the time. The late 1800s trend was to have a dark home with gothic vibes and brown and dark red colours. The Larsson’s home though is bright and colourful with big windows and homemade textiles sewn by Karin.

I also wanted to tell a bit about Brita, the cute little girl on her father’s shoulders in the original post. Here she is portraited in Brita, Cat and a Sandwich. 

She was the fifth child of seven and felt like she didn’t get enough attention from her dad as a middle child in a big family. To get more time with her dad she would ask him to paint only her as often as possible since then she could talk to him without any of her siblings annoying them. This is how she became the most painted of all the children with hundreds of portraits made with her as the model. She was 89 years old when she died in 1982 and loved to talk about her childhood and those many, many painting sessions with dad.

This is one of my favourite paintings by Carl Larsson, A Viking Raid in Dalarna. Here we have all the children in a boat during a cool summer’s eve (from left, Pontus, Brita, Lisbeth, Ulf, Kersti, Esbjörn, Suzanne).
