Babies, Holy wars, and Castle Building.
The war soon ended and Malric and his wife returned to their keep just in time for their first two children to be born. The twins Elin the girl and the proper heir baby Malric were more than the young lord could hope for. Overjoyed he nearly missed out on the glory of Holy Wars against the other pagans beyond Sweden's borders.
Almost.
But these new wars and their battle against masses of unarmored barbarians thought the young Malric the need for his heavily armed beserkers and thus became more effective in warfare than he ever was.
The wars went on for a time and when it ended Sweden ended up with but only one more territory to its name but many valuable lessons were learned.
In 1073 Malrics fame had grown so much that many warriors and merchants began to move in around his keep. Thus a small village was built bringing in new revenue to Duke Malric. Malric prospered then and for a time things were good.
Soon Malrics two eldest were in need of an education and Malric more than happy to take his young son along with him to teach him to be a proper warrior.
Of course Malric was never really a great teacher.
The end of his first decade of rule was marked when a small wooden wall was erected around his keep and village. The future was a bright one and Malric felt he could only gain more from here on out....
Norse Scum!
On October 20th of 1066 the scum of northern Sweden led a Norse Rebellion against their King as he lay upon his deathbed.
Eleven days later the Kings expired and left a nation divided in Civil War. Malric saw his nation in turmoil and refused to bow any northern King who worshiped old gods so he himself raised all his levies and joined the Kings forces in his Capital. They marched forward and seeing his opportunity he opted to lead the attack against the pagan scum that infested the north. They clashed on the border on December 3rd 1066.
Though the enemy leader was a bit more experienced than the young Malric, he did not have superior manpower and thus a victory came to the young Malric. The warriors cheered and Malric found he enjoyed being a Duke a bit more if it allowed him to do things like this.
And of course getting to imprison his enemies on behest of the pope was fun to.
The joy of being a warrior led Malric to develop a charitable attitude with his peasantry that he found himself fighting alongside. The spoils of war were not often just divided among the wealthy warriors of the army then but also the peasants and thus many of the courtiers found Malric just a little more bearable when he dropped coinage into their pockets with every insult he threw at them.
Malric then went to besiege the enemy capitol though he found himself slightly annoyed when the King hired out Mercs to steal his glory from him. Just the same Malric would not be denied leading the siege and not long after the county was taken.
It was then Gaita came to be pregnant on one particular passionate night of killing the Norse Rebels. Malric was pleased, soon his dynasty would be secured.
But not before the lord would face a foe he could not fight. As the siege went on an outbreak of smallpox shook the camp and Malric found himself bedridden within his camp, his wife at his side believing this to be his final days.
And so it was for twenty days. Malric came back though and continued with his raiding and killing as normal. The war would end soon and Malric would find glory and joy upon the battlefield like he had never known before.
Coming Into Power!
He was a young man, only sixteen when he inherited his father's petty land holdings and less than a year later the local duke (a young boy) suddenly up and died. There was no heir and so the land would go to whomever the King would see worthy and to Malric's surprise the King saw that potential in him.
Malric was a soldier through and through and inheriting his fathers estates was never something the young lord saw as "fun", but when his father was killed in a hunting accident he had little choice but to answer the call. Among many things Malric had a horrible temper often flying into rage when annoyed or angered that would, more times than not, leave people and things broken or damaged. Malric's other major flaw was that he was never one for truth and honesty. Malric was known through out as a bit of a liar and a cheat that would back stab most just to get his way. But just the same the young lord was a great warrior and a fearful leader of soldiers. His cruelty served him in this purpose as no one wished to be on the receiving side of his anger.
Malric's personal court was filled with those who did not enjoy his presence, The local Bishop served as his chancellor and was perhaps the closest thing to a friend the young lord could hope for. This was only because the priest wanted to give Malric a chance against his better judgement. The Marshal was pathetic however and Malric would often openly mock the man. "I've seen children with better battlefield command" Malric was often heard saying to his courtiers when receiving reports made by the Marshal. His other lords, while all despised and despising none were as hated as the norse worshiping Spymaster, who was fired for a lesser skilled man simply because Malric did not like his face. With his court in some sort of order (and perhaps all conspiring against him) Malric sensed he needed someone in his life that wouldn't be out to cut his throat. Malric was a man, while adhering to Christian thought, who still believed that the people of Scandinavia should be great warriors and just the same he needed a strong woman as a companion. He sent out messengers to the known world and in the end found a woman of his dreams in Italy of all places.
Gaita di Salreno was a woman warrior that not even Malric could defeat in a fight more often than not. She was not only strong but she much more mindful of military tactics than Malric. She was a powerful warrior and she knew it. Gaita often boasted to men and taunted them into fights that she would then win. She could drink like a any berserker in Malric's court and eat twice as much to. To Malric she was perfect, for bearing him a child at least even if the two cultures of Gaita and Malric would often clash leading to fights between the two.
