The Xuns and the bells

So, about the manga Ouja no Yuugi, bells and the members of the Xun clan. I’m not sure whether it’s sort of an Easter egg intended by the mangaka, or just a curious coincidence.

So, in Ouja no Yuugi, Xun Yu uses (and then loses) a bell to open a rift to the underworld and to command spirits of the dead.

But there is actually a legend about a member of the Xun family and a bell:

During the first years of the Jin dynasty Xun Yu’s distant relative Xun Xu was tasked with rearranging the musical scales and retuning the instruments used in rituals and court music. Xun Xu was apparently a genius for tonal acuity and for remembering and discerning even a subtle difference in musical tones.

Once, during his travels, Xun Xu heard an unusual tone from a cowbell. Years later, after being tasked with this musical reform, he recalled that specific tone and thought it might help him to establish the correct pitches. He ordered that bell to be found. People sent in thousands of bells, one of which was indeed the one Xun Xu had heard years ago. It provided the desired tonal match and enabled Xun Xu to complete his tunings: he obtained the harmonizing note, according to which the new music scales were set.

So, after reading Ouja no Yuugi I can’t help thinking that when designing the characters the mangaka had this legend in mind, and that it was Xun Yu’s lost bell that Xun Xu was trying to find.
