Ricky was never much of a reader. But, with the news of the town murders spread across the pages of the local paper, Ricky found the headlines more entertaining than anything on television. Sitting on the steps of the neighbourhood corner store, his concentration shifted from the paper to the passersby coming in and out of the door. “Between you and me, I think that weird dude with all the cats did it,” Ricky commented to the other walking by as the peered over the top of the page. “Then again, maybe it might be you.”

Mateo chuckled. He felt his ears heat up, “No puedo creer que dije eso.” He wasn’t known for just saying things without thinking them through. “Somos tan predecibles.”

Helena poked him in the upper arm, smiling big at Mateo. “Pero lo hiciste y lo apoyo. Ahora, sólo necesitas una chica que lo apoye también.” She teased, unable to help it at all. “Nosotros somos. Bueno, siempre he sido un poco predecible, ¿cuál es tu excusa?” A soft laugh emerged from her lips.

“Yeah, I’ll go elsewhere. I’m sure I’ll find someone who makes better art than you.” Eddy knew that was a low blow because Mateo was a talented artist. Though he didn’t want to wait for him to make art.

Eddy didn’t know how to prove it when he said that. He bit his lip before he spoke, not sure what to say. The teacher rocked on his heels. “I was coming in to buy some art. But it looks like you’ve got nothing to sell.” Glancing down at his watch he realized he was late. “I should go. I’ve got work in the morning.”

“I’ve sold everything so far.” He looked away, “If you want something come back in four days.” Mateo had no reason to sell anything to him, he was no longer a starving artist. It was a well known fact that people from all over the world and of all social classes would kill to get their hands on a piece of his art. Hell, Wes Anderson is an avid fan of his.

“Okay, so maybe it is.” He sighed, as he teased his curly hair. “I want it to be clear, I didn’t come here for you.”

Mateo returned the sigh. He finally looked over at Eddy, “Of course.” He wasn’t sure whether to trust Eddy, as Mateo did leave their relationship on the rocks. What benefit would Eddy get out of Mateo?

And my dad is… god knows where.” Rosa shrugged, nonchalantly rolling her eyes. She was so beyond caring who her father was or where he was or why he never stayed. “You, uh, do realize that all kids go through baby and toddler phases, right? There isn’t really a ‘Build-A-Kid’ store where you can get one at any age.”

Realmente quiero ser una tía.” Helena nodded as he listed his activities. “Si, si. Ya sabes como soy. Acabo de estar trabajando lejos con los niños, sobre todo ahora, ya que es vacaciones de invierno.”
