One of events specially presented by students of Faculty of Science and Mathematics. Discovery is an annual event and this year is the third one.
This project is a joint project between UPH and Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). Also, this project became a topic for a student's final project. This research addresses the issue of portfolio optimization modeling with Value-at-Risk and Expected Shortfall as the risk measures, and risk factor increments governed by Generalized Hyperbolic distribution.
We have still got it.
Discovery III is back.
Come and participate.
The modeling of tumor growth by our students (Yohanes, Michael and Andreas). In human body, cancer cells behave like a predator to the normal cells. In the early stage, some medicine and treatment could overcome the disease and the patient will be healed. However, if the patient is late to recognize the symptoms the cancer will grow and it is very hard for the patient to be back normal.
Another Student project in 'Mathematics Modeling' Class by Ellen, Andre and Yoel. It is about analysis of the spread of forest fire. The disaster of Forest Fire often occurs in country like Indonesia, Australia during dry season or summer. Our students tried to model the behavior fire spreading during the forest fire.
Math at UPH sent its students to compete in a National Science Olympiad held by PT Pertamina (OSN-Pertamina) and won the province level. In the national level, Math at UPH also won the second place.
Discovery at UPH is a Math and Science Competition for high school students held by students of Faculty of Science and Mathematics. This event is held annually and this was the second event (January 17-21, 2011)
This is one of Mathematics @ UPH's activities. We were doing a community service by training teachers in one least developed area in Indonesia (Teluk Naga, Banten). We trained them to teach Science and Math subjects more interestingly. We taught them how to make a simple tool to make a science demonstration in a class room. [fig]
Human iris is similar to human fingerprint. It is unique. Have you ever seen a movie showing thieves trying to unlock a safe, however the safe is equipped with iris recognition lock so nobody could open the safe other than the owner of the eyes. Here, our students are asked to mathematically model an iris. How could one iris differ one to another? [fig]
This is another one of our students projects in Mathematical modeling. The topic is Image Compression. The image sometimes comes in not one format but in different format. It could be jpg, bmp, png and many more. Each extension has their capability. Image compression is a process to reduce the size of the image in such a way such that the quality of the image is not reduced. Our students have been challenged to derive an algorithm to do such an image compression. [fig]
Finger print is one of applications in real life that can be modeled mathematically. Students at Mathematics UPH were challenged to build mathematical model based on this application. [fig]
This is another student project at Mathematics @ UPH. The course is Mathematical Modeling which challenge our students to build a mathematical model from a real life problem. Cryptography is one of the real life mathematical problems that widely used in our daily life. Credit card fro shopping, password for our email are just examples of this application. [fig]
Alain Cruyff
(alumni Matematika UPH, bekerja sebagai aktuaris sejak 2009)
This poster has been presented in Conference on Industrial and Applied Mathematics (CIAM), Institut Teknologi Bandung, 6 - 8 July 2010 [fig]

This another student project in Mathematics course called Mathematical Modelling. Our student mathematically modeled this problem to analyze and to understand the truth behind Crystallization. [fig]
At Mathematics @ UPH, we have a course that will challenge our students that is so-called Mathematics Modeling. One of the projects for students batch 2006 was to mathematically model an iBot. This is the poster created by our student. Enjoy! [fig]
