I'm absolutely not sure that I believe all those TV show news articles BUT it's kinda wild to me that one of the things people are most upset about is the description of lestat, like

"charming and attractive but prone to petulance escalating to violence" is literally... just what he's like in the book. I mean would anyone NOT characterise the scene with the sex workers as horrifying violence? I know he comes off as more sympathetic in the later books because he's narrating them himself and you get to see his thought process, but in iwtv he IS presented, by louis, as an antagonist. You can glimpse a fragile person behind all the lashing out and the verbal abuse and the lying and the emotional blackmail if you really try, but from what louis tells daniel, he wasn't trying very hard at the time, and honestly I don't blame him! 😂

Okay I recently got a note on this post so I was like "Oh? 👀" and went back and reread it and like. THIS POST WAS WRITTEN IN 2021, the show hadn't premiered yet, we were all just going off promo blurbs for s1, and i was like, How bad can it possibly be!!!

Then it did come out, and I didn't watch it. But last year I did finally watch season 1, and HOLY FUCK lmao. I kinda take it back!!! 😂Book Lestat is pretty awful at times (and his characterisation has been THE hotly debated topic for the whole 20 years I've been in this fandom; there's a reason why VC fandom are pioneers in declaring books noncanonical), and he's done some horrific shit, but I was specifically talking about his treatment of Louis during their decades together, and I was referring to like, emotional manipulation and general fuckass behaviour. He did not and would not beat Louis into mince. Like holy shit Rolin djajdjfsk

Hello! I was wondering, since you're a VC fandom veteran, do you have any idea why old fanfic writers had a tendency to write Marius as a villain in their stories? I came across many old fics that portrayed him as insanely controlling and abusive to other characters, and I know he's no saint but he's a lot more ethical than a lot of others, so I was wondering, was there a time when the fans expressed so much vitriol towards him?

Ah, hmmmmmm…. I don’t remember that specifically, and I’m feeling like I should know that…

… but I can surmise that since he was the only authority figure anyone paid respect to for awhile, that would naturally lead to them speculating on him abusing such status. 

Which he did, somewhat, with Armand, when he took him in. I haven’t personally dissected that ship too thoroughly, so I wouldn’t know.

My lovelies, I would like to begin by stressing that this response is purely based upon my own reading, as well as to an extent conversations with like-minded fellow fans such as @vraik. This is why I personally consider Marius to be a negative, dangerous, harmful character with incredible press, and write him as such in my fanfiction.

Despite being a longtime VC fan (15 or 16 years ago, I wended my way around webrings and had fics stripped from FFN during the Dark Times), I cannot claim that this essay reflects a fandom-wide survey of historical trends regarding perception of Marius. The readings herein are my own, taken from consuming and reexamining the works and seeking meaning within from both a fannish and critical perspective. But they are far from uninformed.

Also, several others have already responded regarding the later books, and said something similar to what I myself feel: that the first three texts constitute the ‘true’ trilogy, and the later ones just get… weird… along the way. It is in the originals, therefore, that I intend to concentrate the majority of my interest, because the fodder there is ample yet easy to overlook. When I do speak of the later books, it will be specifically in connection with the earlier, foundational ones in which the character was established, and not at great length.

This is also gonna be long as hell, so hang on.

WITH THE AMOUNT OF MARIUS FELLATING I DO ON THIS BLOG I ALSO WANTED TO POST SOME CONTRAST/ CONTEXT. 

This is a super good read about what a fucking problem this guy is lol. And like, in direct response, I have no defense of a lot of his horrendous actions. But. He’s still my favorite, and I could ramble and rave about it some other time in another post. For now I will leave it at: “I am always drawn to fucked up characters”, and “The mixed bag of good and bad within this dude is really fascinating to me and I really appreciate it”, and “at the end of the day he’s a fucking vampire and a predator so who are we kidding.” 

I TRIED TO TL;DR MY ANSWER ON WHY I STILL LOVE MARIUS DESPITE ALL HIS GARBAGE, BUT IT KEEPS GETTING LIKE, REALLY LONG AND RAMBLING AND I JUST FEEL LIKE I WANNA GIVE IT ITS OWN POST ONE DAY CAUSE THIS ONE IS ALREADY A LOT TO READ. 

BUT STILL I just also wanna say that I appreciate Marius as a really well rounded, fucked up character, and I’m not like blindly ignoring his wrongdoings. THESE BOOKS ARE FULL OF SO MUCH FUCKED UP SHIT AND I THINK IT’S IMPORTANT FOR EVERYONE TO HAVE A HEALTHY AND HONEST GRASP ON THAT.

Wow, throwback. It seems like the second reblog on this got nuked when the reblogger deleted their blog so the warnings are just left, like the legs of ozymandias. I hope it's still up somewhere because afair it was solid meta.

But it's also quite relevant because yes, the Discourse definitely predates the show, but it REALLY picked up around 2015-16 as part of the broader moral political backlash in fandom as a whole (and probably the reactionary wave in American politics and zeitgeist more broadly), and the author of the possibly nuked reblog was a significant contributor to that trend becoming big in VC fandom.

Contrary to the anon whose ask started this thread, I personally haven't seen Marius portrayed as a villain in all that many of the Old Skool (taking that to mean 90s and early 00s) fics I've read. It certainly happened, usually focusing on him as an authoritarian and thus making him obsessively controlling and using physical punishment. I particularly remember one series where Armand in the present day started a loving romantic relationship with Santino, and Marius lost his gourd. And I'm sure there were others that I never read. But honestly, earlier fanfic also tended to be a bit of a free for all, in the same way the internet in general tended to be a bit more lawless and anything-goes. I also vividly remember a novel length fic series from the same era that featured an insane Mael on a murder and torture spree, to say nothing of all the Armand-as-the-Villain fics which were based on his characterisation from the cult.

So to be sure, the topic isn't new, and the fandom has always noticed these things. But the heightened focus on proving that he, specifically, is the worst character (coinciding with a heightened focus on sexuality as the locus of (im)morality, with proportionally less attention paid to other forms of violence), is fairly recent.
