My former cousin-in-law in Manchester posted this video to his Facebook page and it’s pretty intriguing. I am always fascinated by the way clothing is the first discussion when young people act out criminally. When Columbine happened, it was black trench coats and Marilyn Manson T-shirts. These so-called scallies are apparently identifiable by “trackie bottoms tucked in socks”* and baseball caps pushed too high up on their heads? I also love how most of the kids they interview who look pretty scallie-ish themselves, don’t identify as such. It’s like being a hipster—go interview people on the street in Williamsburg and ask for an example of a hipster, and every hipster will be all, “That guy over there.”
My favorite part of this video, by director Dan Bruun, is the parallels drawn to the similar groups of ruffians of the late 1800’s—proving the point that this isn’t new or unprecedented, some fresh blight visited upon the country by the encroaching foreign masses (as some have posited). I always appreciate when someone blows holes in an argument that boils down to ‘kids today ain’t got no respect’. It’s got nothing to do with ‘today’. Nothing new under the sun, whether you’re talking about the kids, or the clothes on their backs.
