The murder of George Floyd, the lack of accountability, and the protests have triggered a lot of memories from Venezuela and emotions in me: anger, helplessness, fear. The issue at its core is the same here as it is there, a corrupt system that allows for the impunity of those who abuse their power, old structures that need to be actualized. By peeling the layers and recognizing its corruption we set ourselves up to remove what's rotting in them, we are currently doing that, which is awesome, but then we need to put something into the hole we are carving. There's a lot of people carrying a good message, bringing awareness to important problems, uplifting and empowering the undermined, but I also see sneaky “activists” further dividing us, taking advantage of the opportunity to push dangerous ideas on everyone, shaming people for things that are totally out of our control like: who we were born to, where we grew up, any sort of privilege we might have(even if it was earned); this is dangerous because there is no end to it, they will keep pushing until we are ashamed of the mere fact that we exist. This is an overcorrection to the current problem that is just as dangerous. We have an opportunity to break this cycle through empathy, vengeance will only create more suffering, if we truly want to end this war forgiveness is key; this doesn't mean going about life ignoring the damage but recognizing it, paying attention to it and how it makes us feel, what we can do about it and taking action to heal wounds that have been open for far too long.
