Theo didn’t remember much after ten-o-clock. It was a strong possibility that they’d drank too much too fast. That was the first sign, the second was that she’d gone to look for her bike that she’d stashed in a bush earlier and ended up taking a break on a bench. A bench she was currently curled up as a ball and passed out on. Sleep where you fall, or something to that effect. It wasn’t the first time Theo had taken a nap in a random spot, and wouldn’t be the last. As someone who failed to sleep or slept far too much, it was consistent only in the fact that it happened randomly. It could have been the sound of footsteps that roused her, or the voices. Maybe they poked her, but she didn’t know how it happened what she did know is that she was awake and had zero idea where she was. “Whoa dude, what the-” she rubbed at an eye with her hand. Everything was still blurry when she sat up and she did her best to get the person talking to her to come into focus. “Where am I right now?” She asked the mystery humanoid and scratched at her scalp. It wasn’t daylight so that meant she couldn’t have been down long. Not too long at least. “What time is it?” Time to get your ass home, Theo. Though that was what she was trying to do when she ended up asleep on a bench, so it obviously wasn’t going well. “You’re not here to like… rob me or somethin’ are you? Cause I ain got shit.”

Mattie couldn’t really account for the hours of like 11pm to about 2am thanks to the peak of the trip hitting like a motherfucker. He was adamently sure that he saw Santa at one point; although realistically there were plenty of old white dudes in West Virginia and it was probably one of them. The trouble was now, at 3.41am according to his casio watch, he was beginning to crash and felt like Gods honest shit. It was one of those moods that he felt safer just aimlessly wandering around than returning to the warmth of his apartment. That was when he came across a familiar face passed out on a bench. He didn’t want to alarm her so he waved his hand in front of her face a few times, whispering her name, until-- “You’re good, Theo, you’re good,” he kind of slurred out. “Er-- park bench, I think,” honestly it wasn’t out of the question that he didn’t know where he was either. He scoffed at her question and cocked a brow. “No dude, I’m not gonna rob you, unless you got any pot on you then I might take a service charge for the wake up call,” he jested. “But, seriously, the next person along here might try some shit so you should probably get moving-- walk you home? I’m headed that way anyways” He offered.

”Oh come on man, we can get it done later. It’s gonna be on your body forever anyway you can do another afternoon without it.” she walks past, grabbing a light jacket to go. “What do you mean shit? You really don’t wanna go? Come on, it’s my treat.” granted it was his advance payment for the service he did not yet receive, that made such offer possible. “That’s cool, I’ll stand outside and you go up to his pervert ass and get me some cigs, huh?”

“Just because you have a point doesn’t mean I have to like it, J,” Mattie replied as he followed her out the door. “Ooh, your treat? I feel so spoiled and taken care of,” he joked as his hands found the depths of his leather jacket pockets. “It’s not that I don’t wanna go, it’s that I’d just rather go after the fireworks have all done all their banging or whatever.”. Mattie glanced up the street before nodding. “Sounds like a plan, what are we getting? Vodka and cigs?”

A Red Bull… Now that was an idea. But Riggs didn’t quite have the extra money to spend on a can of Red Bull. He’d just chug a couple of sodas from the fridge once Mattie left the store. It was sugar and caffeine all the same wasn’t it? “Couple hours. Yeah, I’m workin’ it.” Partially anyway. Someone else would take over the later it got. “You?” The Solstice seemed right up Mattie’s alley. The guy was the friendly type, and it was an event that was all about rubbing elbows and the spirit of community. At the word ‘change’, Riggs blinked once. In his exhaustion, it was just about the only expression of shock he was capable of. But then Mattie was quickly clearing things up, telling him it was a joke. Riggs gave a sluggish roll of his eyes and shook his head before starting on Mattie’s order. “Por favor… that’s Spanish ain’t it?” He asked idly as he decorated the ‘dog with Mattie’s preferred toppings.

When Riggs didn’t reply, Mattie just assumed the answer was yes and made a mental note to stop by a little later energy drink in hand. “Oh, shit, yeah, I forgot you guys had a pop-up shop for that one. It’s usually a busy night, no?” He spoke casually as he leant up against the counter - it wasn’t like there was anyone else coming in for a hot dog at 10am any time soon. “Er, yeah, I’ll probably tag along after sunset, I’m workin’ til 6 and I’m not too bothered about hearing the ol’ mayor give a peace and unity speech.” Mattie ran his hand along his beard, a comfort tick of his. “Yeah man, I’ve been gettin’ real into these old Spanish films lately-- there’s this one that came out in ‘53 that’s like an old satire comedy it’s called, er-- ‘Bienvenido Mister Marshall’-- don’t understand what the hell they’re saying for most of the film but the whole way its shot and the black and white-- it’s awesome. You manage to find time to watch Braveheart yet, man? Shit is gonna be a classic, mark my words.”.

ellie gave a very awkward smile with a weak chuckle at what mattie was saying. she didn’t want to think about it. what happened to a family friendly summer solstice celebration? like that would ever happen here in lockhorn. she watched as mattie seemed to space out for a moment before remembering what they were talking about and ellie was sure he was on grass. “o-okay, if you say so, i still feel awful,” she said, trying to ignore the embarrassment she was feeling right now. “it was just lemonade,” she answered as she looked back at the line, which actually has picked up some attention since ellie had bumped into mattie. “thank you, i really appreciate it even if it was my fault,” she said with a more genuine smile this time. “i’m such a klutz some times.”

Mattie took one last glance over to the making-out couple and rolled his eyes before paying for the drinks. “Don’t, honestly-- I’d say if I was pissed off,” he wouldn’t, “besides, its more of a tragedy that you spilt lemonade in the first place.”. Mattie thanked the dude behind the bar and then turned back around to Ellie, handing her the new solo cup. “No worries, amigo. Hey, who you here with anyways?” Mattie asked, glancing around to see if there was a group or anyone waiting for her attention. “Not that there’s anything wrong with riding solo to these things, hell you know I am,” he chuckled.

ellie looked up to see who she had bumped into, already wanting to fall into a hole and let the earth swallow her so she can hide from the embarrassment she felt. she hadn’t even been here ten minutes and was already regretting coming. she should have just stayed home or picked up a shift at work. she thought about how easy tonight would have been at work with most of the town here at the solstice festival. she recognized the guy, only enough to know he hung around with alec and those other people that ellie tried to avoid as much as possible. confused by his words, she glanced to where he was looking and instantly regretted it. “oh,” she said, quickly turning back to him. didn’t people have manors? if you’re going to do that at least do it in the privacy of your home. instead she focused on whether or not she ruined this guy’s shoes. “i’m so sorry, i hope i didn’t ruin them,” she said despite him already assuring her that it probably wouldn’t.” there was something slightly off about him but ellie couldn’t quite place it. maybe he was high on grass. “i should really watch where i’m going, i don’t even know why i’m here.” the last part was said in a mumble, mostly to herself.

“Who needs PornHub when you have small town solstice parties, right?” He scoffed, rolling his eyes and turning back to the conversation which honestly he’d entirely forgetten how it started. “Ruin them?” He furrowed his eyebrows before following her gaze to his shoes. “Oh! Yeah, no-- like I said, mad waterproof. Don’t freat it, seriously, it’s cool.”. Mattie shrugged off the whole thing, because honestly even sober he didn’t give much of a shit about clothes and fashion and all that shit. “Hey, what was it though?” He asked as he stepped up in line. “You just lost your whole drink and like-- the line’s pretty long now, lemme refill you,” he offered with a smile, before ordering himself a root beer. “Honestly, it’s fine-- what do you want?”

“Surprisin’ly,” Riggs responded, voice thick with sleep. He then yawned. Mattie went through shit and only seemed come back stronger. Practically indestructible now seeing as he had a hotdog every damn day and seemed fit as a butcher’s dog. At this point, it wouldn’t shock Riggs to discover the hospital lined the guy’s stomach with fucking steel. He brought a hand to the back of his neck, feeling a knot there from how awkwardly he slept last night. There wasn’t much space between the shelves and the freezer in the store room. He had to contort himself in whatever way helped him stretch out the most but even then, it wasn’t much. “Yeah, ‘could say that… Late night, early morning. Shit combo. But is what it is ain’t it?” Another yawn escaped him. An even bigger one this time that had his eyes watering. Riggs swiped the back of his hand against his eyes and gave his head a firm shake so he’d snap out of it. “You want your usual, right?” Normally, Riggs would have Mattie’s order ready to go before he even came in but Riggs was off his game today.

“I’ll take that as a compliment,” Mattie smiled as he approached the counter, raising both his brows as Riggs had to quite literally shake himself awake. “You need something to help with keepin’ you awake there, pal? Them Red Bull things are supposed to be pretty good, I don’t mind runnin’ down to the gas station for you, bro,” he offered, nodding in response to the age old ‘it is what it is’ question. “What time you get off? You gotta have a nap before the party tonight-- you’re coming to this solstice shit, right?” Mattie sniffled and scratched his beard. “Ah, no, I think I’m gonna change it up today actually,” he said, deadpanned. “Kidding-- kidding, obviously-- same as every other day, pov favour.”.

“look, i know i said i’d do your thing today but i can’t be fucked right now…” she didn’t mean to sound like a bitch but one could not force art. at least not her art. tattooing was a delicate and long process and her mind was not on it. “can we get high and go to this solstice party instead? i’ll like…get you a beer. is the gas station open? i need more cigs…”

Mattie groaned for the added dramatics of the scene as she said that she couldn’t be fucked to work tonight. “Ugh, fine, I guess-- it’s not like I, y’know, paid in advance or anything,” he replied with probably a little too much sarcasm. His face screwed up a bit when she said about going to the party. “You wanna go to that shit?” He asked as if he’d ever missed a party in the history of ever. “Er-- yeah, yeah, I think so but I think it’s that creepy perverts shift on a Friday night, no? Honestly, has the dude ever looked a woman in her eyes?”

She’s sitting somewhere away from the crowd of people. Too much chatter, it makes her head start to hurt. Normally, she’s good at tuning it out- but as of recently, and the lack of sleep, plus long hours? Well, it didn’t take a rocket scientist to know she was slightly over stimulated. So, in the meantime- she’d created a hidey-hole. Did she steal the boom box right under the Windy Shot’s nose? Well, maybe. Then again, that’s neither here nor there, considering her co-worker’s taste in music- or whoever was in charge of the track- was subpar at best. She was saving them, really. And anyways, she’ll give it back- after her break is over. There’s a bag that’s sitting next to her, and she’s on the ground- leaning up against a stone half-fence that circles the middle of town-square. The bag itself is stolen too, pretty sure it was their moms at one point, or Kady’s- considering the fourteen year old girl that lives with them, is the only one with any sort of fashion sense. Luckily, that wasn’t something Ti really had to worry about, sporting the Windy Shot’s tee and apron. After rumbling through the faux leather for a minute or two, she’s pulling out an old player- it’s her pride and joy, and she doesn’t go anywhere without music. Popping it open, she’s taking out the CD, and putting it in the top of the stereo. Green day- who else? It’s not until she notices someone approaching, after turning it on, and scribbling down in her notepad a few to-do’s for the next morning, does she finally acknowledge them. “Shit,” A small huff of breath. “Has anyone ever told you to invest in a bell?”

Mattie was feeling the full effects of the tab he’d dropped a couple hours ago; the lights and sounds and music all kind of merged into one and his body was all tingly and warm in the best way possible. Not many people would actually realise he was as high as he was; not because he was good at hiding it but because ‘oh that’s just Mattie being Mattie’. He’d stumbled around the party for a bit now and ended getting into a bit of an argument with-- he couldn’t remember who with-- but it made him seek some solstice (get it?) on the outer rim of the crowds. That was when he saw someone else doing the same thing, except they were solo chilling with a boombox. He walked up to her and her greeting made him laugh. “I already have one-- it’s just, like, on my bike. I think. Although, I did lose that bike like three years ago so I wonder if the bell is still attached.” He rambled. “Whatcha doing all the way over here-- you know the party is that way, right?” He said, pointing off down the road.

Riggs rubbed at his eyes. He was up earlier than he’d like today. Stupid dream’s fault. Then again ‘comfortable’ wasn’t exactly the word he’d use to describe whatever space he managed to carve for himself in the Hometown Hotdogs store room. But it was the first night. He was sure it’d get better – or he’d care less – once his body got used to all of the oh-so-wonderful smells and sounds in there. Least he hoped it would. The low hum of the freezer wasn’t exactly the most appealing thing to fall asleep to. On the bright side of things, he managed to stun his supervisor into a minute long silence by getting their quaint hotdog joint ready for business before ol’ J-Dog even managed to clock in this morning. I’m not paying you extra for this, was what Jason told him the moment he wasn’t too stunned to speak. Not that Riggs was expecting a reward. He didn’t work for Hometown Hotdogs because they were generous after all. But waking up early and doing all of that work to keep himself occupied was taking a toll on him. Now here he was, manning the stand, when all he really wanted was a fucking nap. “Would you like a hot dog that could kill you or a hot dog that could kill you with stuff on it?” He asked the person that approached their stall. “Options are a-plenty in this here establishment.” He told the onlooker in his tired drawl, gesturing lazily to the small selection of condiments they offered.

Mattie had chosen to do what all good people to do when they are experiencing mental angish; suppress, suppress, suppress. If you didn’t think about it, it never happened, right? The tactic had gotten him this far in life; albeit some might say he’s not exactly got very far living in a barely one bed flat originally designed as a retirement home opposite the hot dog place that everyone has got food poisioning from at least once in their lifetime. Said hog dog place, as it turns out, constituted for at least one of Mattie’s meals damn near every day. He’d tried to branch out into corn dogs, but to be honest the cornbread really takes away from the meat experience of a traditional West Virginian hotdog. Walking in, he already knew to expect Riggs behind the counter; he had the schedule of the place down to a T.

“Hey now, I don’t think that’s entirely fair on the old boys now-- I’ve been eating here damn near fifteen ears and you don’t see me keeling over and dying anytime soon now, do ya?” Mattie rose a brow in Riggs’ direction. “Late night, sprite?”

why am i here? the question played in ellie’s head over and over again as she rode her bike into town and to the solstice party. she probably could have gotten a ride from her dad, but ellie preferred to not put herself through that whole ordeal. the last thing she wanted to do was listen to another rant about how the town was going to shit and all the different slurs he could come up with. plus, she didn’t mind riding her bike, it meant she can leave as soon as she was ready to get the hell out of there. once her bike was changed up against a tree, she decided to venture into the crowd, hoping to find at least one friendly face. she went to get a drink first, mostly to have something in her hands to not feel as awkward. but just as her luck, as she was turning around, she didn’t realize someone was standing right behind her and bumped into them, dropping her cup of lemonade on her shoes and probably the shoes of the other person. “shoot, i am so sorry, i didn’t see you there,” she apologized instantly. “did i get any on you?”

Mattie had never missed out on a party - and he certainly wasn’t about to change that now. It was a quirky aspect of his personality; truly the definition of the introverted extrovert. He’d dropped before arriving, but he was still riding that inital high enough that all the lights and sounds made quite the beautiful song. It was like the solstice party was serenading him. Trouble was - that shit makes you THIRSTY. So, here Mattie stood in line at the drinks stall for the third time in the single hour he’d been here, waiting to get another red solo cup of root beer. That was when the girl in front, Ellie? He thinks that’s her name, turned around and--

“Oh boy, that’s gonna be a sticky situation later,” he said, words ever so slightly mumbled together. “Probably not the only sticky situation to occur tonight, if you catch my drift,” his eyes flicked to a couple essentiall dry humping not ten yards to their left. “Er-- I couldn’t tell ya, these shoes are like mad waterproof and, well, your drink was clear so--”

Drown | Self Paragraph

It started how it always did; in darkness. Then, slowly as if it were a game struggling to load, little pixels of the world fell into place and he was immersed in the dream. Standing on the bridge - waiting. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d had a dream that didn’t take place here, and they happened so often that, at least for now, he subconciously knew that this wasn’t real. Yet, there was a chill in the air, and the trees spoke to one another through the wind. His lips were chapped and there was something, something cold, dripping down his neck from his ear. A hand slowly investigated the sensation, and as he felt the warm liquid the grip he had on reality - or lack thereof - disappeared. His hand began to shake as he brought it into his eyeline, his breathing was not too far behind when he saw the blood.
