Anas al-Sharif

A week ago today, Anas al-Sharif was assassinated by the Israeli occupying forces in Gaza. A prominent frontline journalist working for Al Jazeera, he was targeted and killed alongside five other journalists whilst taking shelter in a tent. At the time, he was the last remaining journalist I was following on Twitter – all others had been systematically killed by the IOF since the start of the invasion
On the day of his death, Anas warned of the imminent invasion of Gaza City. He shared a video, his final tweet, documenting nearby explosions with the caption: “Relentless bombardment… For two hours, the Israeli aggression has intensified on Gaza City”. Less than an hour later, he was dead
According to the UN, the number of Palestinian journalists killed by Israel since the start of the conflict currently stands at 242. It has become the deadliest conflict for journalists in all known conflicts in the history of the world
“Palestinian journalists are being threatened, directly targeted and murdered by Israeli forces, and are arbitrarily detained and tortured in retaliation for their work. Media infrastructure in Gaza is systematically destroyed, and censorship has been tightened throughout the West Bank and Israel. By silencing the press–those who document and bear witness–Israel is silencing the war” - CPJ
Anas's social media pages are still active, with an open call for activists, journalists and influencers around the world to get involved:
“We will continue to share breaking news, exclusive footage, and images from our trusted sources. To support this mission, we invite every journalist and field activist anywhere in the world who possesses documentation of occupation crimes to reach out to us... We also call on all freedom-loving individuals around the world — especially those with skills in content creation, translation, editing, web developer, and video production — to lend a hand in this mission, in fulfilment of the martyr’s wish that the coverage must go on, and that the voices of Gaza's people reach the world"
