WEEK 7: Design Principles
Throughout these last 8 weeks, I have learned quite a bit about basic team work, the overall design process & its pitfalls at every turn. Experiencing the confusiasm again throughout the project always gave me a reason to keep trying to clear things up. This is an obstacle I have learned from, and now know that the energy & attitude we all bring to the team is very important. In order to keep a good vibration within the team, there is a need for some rules, or in some cases principles.
I think its important that everyone brings the same amount of motivation & energy to the table.
Everyone's ideas & opinions should be taken into consideration during the entire process. That is what i consider open design.
Everyone has their skills & weaknesses, that should be considered when assigning jobs & tasks. There should be a trade-off between the quality of work, and the time invested.
These are 3 aspects of the design process I learned in these 8 weeks. Beyond and over that, there are some more principles I think are important in design.
Form should support Function
It should be intuitive & simple to use.
The energy needed to use the product or service, should correspond to the value you get out of it. A good bike, runs smoothly, and requires less energy, where a old, rusty bike would require energy to fix & maintain before able to use.
To finish, I would like to emphasize on the idea that we are all creators, and just need to apply ourselves properly. When we bring our motivation on the table, or we work as a team, and feel like we are part of something, ideas come naturally, the whole process becomes fun, and we improve ourselves as we go along this process, without much effort.

Marketing is all about your colours! Don't forget, it different for everyone.
WEEK 6: Internal vs External Marketing
On the subject of Marketing there are many views, opinions, and methods to achieve the same objective. This objective is to transform and idea, service or product into a desirable good, by appealing to specific target groups. Marketing can have many different applications, and has interesting similarities with Personal Branding. Marketing is the term used for the general subject of making products appealing to an audience. What if that product was a person? This would make the theories and knowledge we learned in Personal Branding a form of marketing technique.
I think Marketing is so widely influential because we are all subject to the forces of our own perception. Our perception helps us differentiate between the things that interest us & those that don't. So marketing essentially is a tool used to cater to specific groups or individuals interests. This perception problem makes us choose, our community, friends, education, favourite brands, services or companies. Defining ourselves in such a way creates the context we choose to live in, but ultimately also forms the way in which we want to be perceived. This cycle, of perceiving & being perceived is the reason why Marketing is such a hit.
To come back to Personal branding, which i will know define as finding yourself & your interest, then turns into Personal Marketing. The beauty or perhaps the pitfall of marketing is that the principle stays the same, however the way you go about doing it can change.
Seeing Marketing in such a way, now brings us to the internal vs external marketing. To me, Internal marketing for example by a company , would be much like defining yourself, your interests & what people stand for, but for a company. The external marketing has to do with how this ideology you call a personal brand is perceived by the outside world, and how you go about promoting it.
This is what I think about when I hear Marketing, and what it actually means.
WEEK 5: Using the Crowd (Funding vs Sourcing)
Having learnt quite a bit about crowdsourcing two weeks ago, has given me insight onto what its benefits are for Design, but also just in general. The idea behind both of these approaches is to use the crowd to help out in your process, be it in Design, Science, or Arts. Of course there are different levels of crowds, as we discussed in week 2 & 3. The me, we, network approach, can help divide this larger topic of crowdsourcing into narrower fields. Depending on what we are trying to source ( for example Ideas on how to improve a IT company office) there can be many different paths to follow. In the example given, it would be almost futile to address this issue to the entire Internet community. In order to hopefully ever get good results, it would be a lot more beneficial to pitch this issue to a specific online community through one of the many platforms (linked IN, Facebook, ResearchGate). This community has already formed prior to the issue, and have a shared interest in Office Design, Healthy office spaces, or even Work Psychology. When addressing this issue to a group of people who are familiar with such a topic, will first reduce the number of total ideas that are not applicable, second will generate a number of useful & grounded ideas, and third might allow for a discussion on the issue to be started, which could bring up new parts of the problem. Depending on the community the creativeness of ideas can vary. To impact this it is important to ask or state a clear & focused problem to the crowd, so that they may understand the problem fully reducing the amount of possible misunderstanding. Having said this about crowdsourcing, lets take a look at Crowd funding and how this differentiates itself. Crowd funding could be considered a form of crowdsourcing, as it uses the public to help give momentum to a project. However, in order to Crowd fund a project, be it for financial reason, or Human Resources, it is necessary to have a clear objective, mission, & reason for the project, to help people support the idea. In order to do this a degree of marketing will be needed to portray the product/service that is being developed, so that it can simply attract attention on different crowd funding websites, and look legitamate. However with only a good marketing effort, no product will ever be funded & developed fully. In order to get support from the crowd, you have to ensure the integrity of the product itself (technically & aesthetically), and be certain of the people who you are developing this idea with. This means that you need a team of motivated & trained people that keep pushing the project to its limits, to actually make this product worth funding for people who just take a glance at it online.
In the end, Crowdsourcing differs from funding, in one major way. When using crowdsourcing, ideas can still be in their incubation stage, or barely developed, before they get brought out to the public to ask for help or insight on what could be improved. This doesn't mean, that the issue doesn't need to be clear and concise, but that the actual technicalities of the final design do not need to be considered. Therefore it can be easier to get input from the Crowd at this stage of a project. Crowd funding on the other hand requires a project already well on track, in order to get enough momentum online, to get it funded and supported. Herein lies the major difference, of how to apply these two concepts. However they share many similarities, like the fact that no matter what project, or idea you have, to bring it to the crowd, it will requires a lot of energy, and persistence before the goal is reached.
WEEK 4: Design Team Dynamics
Design Teams, Work Teams, Creative Teams, Sports teams, or structural teams all have one thing in common. They take individuals skill & energy and turn them into a combined effort to accomplish a common goal. The idea that working together can have greater benefits for the collective than working individually has been clear to humans since the beginning of hunter & gatherer societies. We could even say, that our very distant mammal relatives, the Chimpanzee's had already figured this out. Although this example takes it a bit far, the idea behind it is clear; Collaboration is a quintessential to Human progress.
However intuitive & important teamwork might be in our society, it is not always as simple as we would like to think. Efficient team management starts by addressing individual needs of the team. In order to understand the many different levels of needs people can have, I like to use Maslow's Hierarchy of needs to break up this aspect of human psychology. When using this hierarchy as a structure to map out individual needs, we can start seeing a relationship between peoples needs & their living situation.
Having said this about team work, i want to finish by reflecting on our team work. The last 2 weeks have become a lot more productive for the team as a whole. We managed to divide tasks into smaller groups, and all have something to contribute. With a larger group like ours, individual participation sometimes is a problem as not everyone knows what to do, or has a clear task in mind. It has always worked best for me better when we managed to divide up tasks and connect our efforts. As a team we are also trying to apply what we are learning about Team Work, directly to our challenge. In order to keep this up, I think its important that we stay organized, and all have an idea of what has to be accomplished, and each person can take a part in it.

WEEK 3: Crowdsourcing and Me
When I reflect back on how I use online structures I see 3 main directions.
The first and most commonly used simply involves my network of friends, that I connect through via Facebook, Skype or through phone services such as Viber or tango. With my network of friends distributed around the world, it helps me keep in contact, but also keep up to date with what they are doing, by following their timeline, posts, or new interests (often through Facebook). Direct communication is my preferred method, as it allows to create a conversation/discussion in real time, instead of bouncing idea's back and forth. Of course there is a division between how I use these structures in my different social circles. During Team work, or projects the structure help largely to keep everyone updated, and informed on what has been done, what needs to be done, when.
The second way in which I use online structures, is to explore & gather information. These topics are currently of personal interest, due to school, or personal projects. Websites like Wikipedia, Online Database forums, or Google Scholar, help tremendously in acquiring basic information, but also to gain insights & in-depth knowledge. Even when tackling everyday problems in the house, like fixing things, these structure prove to be very helpful.
The last direction in which I use online structure is to find inspiration, new ideas, or to simply release some energy by going on 9gag. Website like Edge.org and TED, are always a good source of information, but often have innovative, or creative perspective on how to solve issues, or go about handling them.
So how does Crowdsourcing fit into all this?
For me, to be truthful, Crowdsourcing has not yet had such a great impact on me. Although asking questions on yahoo.answers could be considered as such, there is a lot more potential to crowdsourcing I have to unlock. In order to do this, I have to find groups that share my interest, on diverse social or online platforms, with whom I can discuss idea's, ask for insights, or simply give my view on the topic at hand. An great example for this would be Kitesurfing. Although I love the sport, and have great beaches around holland to do so, they are often inaccessible without a car, making it difficult for me to attain. However through online groups, it could be possible to organise a trip, with 3 or 4 people, who have time & interest. This would pool resources, and would only require one individual to actually have a car, with shared gas costs. This is a simple way to crowdsource, and is almost like Car pooling.
I can see how crowdsourcing can be a helpful tool to anyone, and can often make life easier.

WEEK 2: DIGITAL IDENTITY
This week we were introduced to the concept of technology stewardship, what it means, and what it actually stands for. The idea of helping people meet their needs, through the use of technology, helps direct individuals, but also collectives to better meet their objectives. The amount of available technologies is staggering and continuously growing, however the application, and implementation of such technologies correctly often requires time and effort. With other life constraint it is not always possible to meet these requirements, thus making a person dedicated to address these issues, in a Organisation, or commune a excellent solution. Much like a System Administrators, a technology steward has to ensure the functionality of the digital system, used in the environment, and ensure it meets its growing needs.
In a modern, digitalised world, where technology is abundant a large majority of people, controlling your own digital space becomes a part of life. This is where the knowledge behind technology stewardship becomes relevant to you as an individual.
Having learned this, meant that we had to define our digital identity, to help represent ourselves online. I see this as an opportunity to reach out to a broader more diverse number of people, with similar subjects of interest. Defining ourselves, on the other hand means, figuring out who we are, what we do best, what we enjoy doing, and what we may not enjoy, or do so well at. This requires reflection and research.
During the last year I was able to improve my team working skills, and am happy to apply them now. I enjoy collaboration, and helping each other out. Communications channels, and keeping each other updated is an essential part of a functioning team. I enjoy writing, and clearing things up, within a group, but get motivated by a challenge, or problem. On the other hand I enjoy creating media, be it videos, images, or just creating a visual design for a report. Even though I am still learning on many platforms, i always set a goal, and work towards it, with the use of tutorials, forums, or by asking people around me. I enjoy the freedom we obtain through the use of our digital tools, and have need to share this with others. Doing this comes from a believe that in the long term technology can help us overcome many of life's problems, by using these technologies properly. Be it while using communication tools, social networks or digital media editors, I always enjoy sharing what I know, but am always amazed at how much I learn through the application of what little I know.
To finish this weeks blogs, and reflecting on what I have learned, has made me think of the picture posted bellow. Even though technology does so much, I always love going back to reading, doing sports, or spending time with friends & family. This picture reflects my feelings on technology in my life, but also in the world. I believe a balance between both worlds, is the way to not only get the most out of technology, but still live a natural life, defined by our natural environment.
WEEK1: TEAM FORMING
During this week we made 3 major decisions in our team.
1. We discussed as team what our strength and weaknesses were, helping us decide what our individual tasks would be. This will hopefully improve our team dynamics, and make our work as a team more effective.
2. We decided on team rules, that will help the team stay on track, and reduce possible issues that could arise. Things like punctuality, or our collective attendance for an assignment could have an impact on what we end up delivering, and how much pressure is put on individuals who do attempt to complete the work. The rules should reduce the issues that could come up, and make sure that we all work together to complete our assignements.
3. The last decisions taken was about initiating contact with Solidaridad. Our contact person Maarten, should help us understand the company more. Even though I did some background research on the company, and have gotten a basic understanding of what it does, and how it operates, i didn't find much information about our challenge, or the network they are initialising. Hopefully Maarten will provide us with more information, and some insights on the network, shedding some light on what our challenge will actually involve.
Even though we were all a bit confused about what had to be done, and what was expected from us during this project, we divided tasks, made rules and initiated contact to start. This should help set the team in the right direction, help us collaborate effectively, and enjoy our work during this project.
