My brother and I have birthdays three days apart, I came home from the hospital on his 10th birthday. Whenever he was home we'd get one cake with too many candles & share.
It's my brother's birthday today. The first one without him. I sent flowers to my parents. I called but they didn't answer so I left a voicemail. I'd like to think they went out shopping or out to dinner, but it's more likely they're home, not eating, and suffering under the crushing weight of the loss of their first born child.
I don't know what to say to my parents sometimes. I share funny stories, heartwarming stories, fond memories, but the void left by his loss just keeps growing. Grief is weird.
One day I'll be older than my big brother ever got the chance to be.
I have two voicemails saved from him wishing me a happy birthday. He always said "sister" in this weird exaggerated way, it made me smile every time.
When I was little he ate the tops of my broccoli because I only liked the stems. He hated pumpkin pie. He loved snowboarding.
His son is just a toddler, he looks more and more like my brother every day. He's also just as mischievous. It breaks my heart to know he'll never have any memories of my brother. I'll try my best to tell stories about him and all of the lessons I learned from him.
