It’s just a matter of figuring out placement on the crawl. Like should we be last? Or somewhere in the middle because we want people to stay for a while, but not be so drunk they won’t buy a thing

Bridgette climbed the stairs up to Maxine, Dominic, and Spencer’s apartment since the elevator was out yet again. She adjusted her bag over her shoulder as she reached the door and then knocked a couple of times. She smoothed out her red skirt that she bought exactly for this occasion. She finally decided to take Maxine’s advice and try something new, which in this case happened to be salsa dancing. She didn’t want to go alone and Maxine was more than happy to join her. Bridgette grinned and reached over to Maxine to hug her when she answered the door. “Hey, bitch! Are you ready to go?” She pulled back and looked at her outfit. “Oh my God, you look so hot. And honestly, I gotta say, the elevator goes out so often here and now I know why your legs look so killer.”

Hearing a knock at the door, Maxine finished up the last bit of her makeup and made her way to the door. “Hey, hot stuff,” she greeted in kind with an embrace. “Oh I am so ready!” When they pulled apart, Max snickered a bit when she saw they’d both had the same idea. Max was also wearing a skirt specifically for salsa dance. “You are really pulling off that look. We are going to be the talk of this class,” she commented with a wink, grabbing the rest of her things and locking up her apartment. “Honestly, that elevator is pretty janky. It’s almost gone out on us before, so we all just take the stairs most of the time. Have you done much salsa dancing before?”

          Madison hadn’t been to a costume party in so long. It seemed like a gamble in a place like Edgewood where weird things always seemed to happen anyway. She really didn’t want to accidently get caught up in some random curse or something and be stuck in her costume until someone managed to undo the curse. Maybe that was just for the movies, but with Edgewood, she never knew. Still, she kept her costume simple: a zombie. Lots of people seemed out and dressed in some funky costumes, which made the night more enjoyable. She turned to the person beside her. “Okay, I know you’re supposed to ask what the person you’re talking to is, but isn’t it more fun to talk about what you think other people are dressed like? Sure, that person’s a witch, but what is that?” she pointed to an intricate costume that probably came from a television show she didn’t watch.

Halloween was probably one of Maxine’s favorite holidays. This year, she hadn’t quite taken the time to make an intricate costume like usual (and usually, she would make Spencer and Dominic wear something in a similar theme), but she still put in a lot of time and effort into her costume. By this point in the night, she had a healthy buzz going and decided to start mingling with strangers. It was when someone began talking with her, unprompted, that Max’s interest peaked. Her name started with an ‘M’, right? “Oooh can we turn this into a game and add in our own judgements? Because I am so, so in. Also, if I see another witch costume tonight, I am going to scream.” Her eyes moved to the pointed costume. It was something that effort was put into, but she wasn’t quite sure what it was. “My guess would be some sort of mythological creature, but I have no clue. Or maybe cthulu? What is your guess?”

Spencer unlocked the building door and stepped inside, holding the door open for Dominic to step inside. “I hope we didn’t forget anything, wouldn’t want to disrupt the evening for another grocery run,” he said as they made their way up the stairs. He has been looking forward to this evening since they made the plans. Their evenings cooking together have always been his favourite activity.

Unlocking the door, he pushed inside and smiled as Max greeted them. “Which wine did you open?” Spencer replied waiting for Dominic to get inside and close  the door before making his way over to the kitchen. “It smells amazing, Max. Good idea with the mushrooms, I was already starting to feel hungry.”

Dominic slipped past Spencer into the apartment with a ‘thanks’. “Hi Max,” he called out, “I would love some wine.” Once he got into the kitchen, he plopped the grocery bags on the counter with a dramatic sigh. “Next time you get the heavy bags, Spence.” He started unloading his bags, slipping past Maxine to put the cold items in the fridge. “What stuffing did you use this time?” He loved meals that could be switched up, making fun variations on his favorites.

Her smile brightened seeing her partners in the kitchen. A load felt like it lifted off her shoulders every time the two of them were at her side, and it was clear in how she held themselves with them around, versus without. As Nic walked past her, she grabbed his arm for a moment to get on her tip toes and plant a kiss on his cheek. “I’ve opened a lambrusco, do you want a glass, hot stuff?” she asked Spence as she sauntered off to top off her glass. “I did a pesto stuffing of sorts, nothing too fancy. What did you two decide we should make for dinner?”

“It can be, yeah.” Beatrice said, letting out an awkward chuckle, feeling embarrassed that the other woman had brought up her rambling, even though she understood why she was and she really did appreciate the concern. “Oh good, good. That’s… good.” She said, trailing off awkwardly. It shouldn’t be this hard to carry on a normal conversation! “That would be preferable. I’m really blowing it right now, huh?” She shook her head at herself. “That… would actually be really great, thank you.”

The assurance that it was a normal behavior resulted in Maxine relaxing a bit more. She gave a dismissive shrug at the question. “I can deal with babbling, especially given your head injury. You’re not being rude, so it’s fine. Trust me, running a club, I’ve dealt with way worse.” 

She picked her supplies back up and nodded her head for the younger woman to follow. “Of course, the car is this way. Do you need to stop anywhere first, or just back to the Kingsley’s?” Although Beatrice was living with Charlotte, she still was a stranger to Maxine, so she took the moment to reach out to Beatrice’s mind.

“Perfect. And let me know if I have any other competition and who they are, because I promise you that I’ll blow them out of the fucking water,” she said to Maxine with a grin. Being a nurse was just a job that paid the bills and her other expensive habits and put her in the good graces of the council, if she had it her way, she would have moved as far away from Wisconsin as she could and studied art and design somewhere else and lived in a big city on the coast. She still didn’t rule out moving away and living on the West or East coast, but she knew that she couldn’t move now since her father went missing. Bridgette didn’t care for many others other than herself, but she did care about her father and wanted to know where he’d gone and if he was still alive.

“Ugh, I hate it. I need something new or my mind will continue to melt into a pile of mush,” Bridgette complained. She always needed to have something happening and having nothing fun happening would be the death of her. She took a swig of her drink and made a face at the thought of meeting anyone. “Sometimes, but I think the pool is pretty much dry at this point. Absolutely no one worth keeping around. They’ve got nothing to offer except a select few benefits and then nothing else.”

Hearing the confidence and pitch, Maxine laughed, “I am certain you will. If there is competition, I’ll have you both put together profiles. But, for now, I don’t think we had even thrown around any names.” Mixing business and family may not be the smartest idea, but business and romance wasn’t supposed to be either. Given her situation, she was sure that they could make this work smoothly. 

She hummed in response, taking another sip of her drink. She certainly never thought she’d be able to have a relatively mundane life. Of course, she still did party more than the average adult, but not near at the pace she used to. Perhaps with time, Bridgette, too would find ease with life. “Understandable. At the risk of sounding like an old ass adult, have you tried some new hobbies? You could always try drag, or doing makeup for a drag queen - some more off the wall type of activities, you know?” she shrugged. It was a different suggestion, but still not that exciting. “Damn, so no hot singles have shown up at your work on a silver platter, or gurney, rather, in recent times? Truly tragic.”

“Probably true.” Maggie agreed. It was a fair enough evaluation, and there was definitely some merit to it, but she wasn’t going to examine it too closely. She always enjoyed the time that she and Maxine spent together.

“Right. Yeah. I can do that,” Maggie said, psyching herself up. She was great at talking, she did it all the time! She could even talk to strangers. So why was this so difficult for her? Probably her tendency to ramble and word vomit. Also, you know, the years she’d been unsure of the reality of the world around her. Turns out seeing an increasing number of ghosts everywhere could be kind of traumatic. Maggie glanced at the woman that Maxine was talking about, taking a moment to consider. Yeah, she could do that. “Well, I guess I have to start somewhere, don’t I?”

Maxine grinned, encouragingly. “Remember, you’re a catch, gorg,” she added, placing a hand on her shoulder for a quick pat. Just a few moments later, everyone was snapping as the last presenter concluded their poem. The lights came back on and people began stirring. However, the woman Maxine had pointed out, stayed settled in her seat. “And this is the best place to start. People here will want to talk and hear your opinions. Now go get her.” She winked as Maggie stood up.

“Yeah. I’ve heard some pretty disturbing things. Wanted to tell some folks that they should really see a therapist. Some people I felt like I needed to report to someone.” Xavier shuddered. He couldn’t imagine the kinds of things that Maxine had heard, being a woman. People really lost their filter when they were drunk. “We had a bachelor party in one night, and it turns out the groom had cheated his fiance and her brother was part of the party. Every time he came up to order drinks he was ‘forgetting’ what the groom ordered. The night ended with spilled drinks,”

Maxine grimaced as Xavier spoke the all too relevant truth. “Well, I mean, you aren’t under oath like a therapist. I have definitely reported people before who told me disturbing things,” she admitted, not the least bit ashamed. Nor was she about kicking out creepy patrons. Maybe she had a reputation as a no-bullshit kind of owner, but she was proud of it. “God, sounds like the typical BS of a bachelor party. Honestly, I am so over those heteronormative parties. They always seem to fuel more drama,” before she could go off on a rant about how many lined up with drag show nights, her phone buzzed. “Oh, shit, I should probably get going. It was nice chatting with you.”
