Oh gosh, well, everything from this election cycle really. Trump’s said more than his fair share of politically and factually incorrect statements, and while Clinton is better about being diplomatic, she’s made some blunders herself. So we’re debunking those, critiquing their debating styles, going back and looking at other candidates and their views. It’s interesting because while this is a communications course, it’s something a lot of people found worth taking, so there are students from all sorts of backgrounds in class, makes for better discussion.

“It sounds like an interesting class. Maybe it’ll help your students figure out this mess of an election year. I can’t believe this is where we’re at right now, to be honest.”

A section on cultural communication, ironically, 21st century communication, and then a special interests course covering the election that looks at the politically incorrect rhetoric. So all sorts of interesting stuff.

“What sort of examples do you have already for the special interests course?”

Not requirement, but there’s a different kind of bonding that comes through native languages. Like my parents know and speak English, but get them with other people who speak their tongue and it’s totally different. You relate differently; having both languages makes it easier to communicate in all sorts of ways. It has been, busy too, but I think it’s finally starting to settle a little bit.

“Yeah, true. What are you teaching this semester?”

“Yes, I do also love kids, but I think that the Tagalog still got me some bonus points. How’ve you been?”

It definitely did. It must have been important for them to be able to communicate with the nurses who came over, so you were probably a big help. I’m good—I’ve been good. It’s the start of a new year, so I’m still getting settled at school with the new kids and material.

"Well, most of them do speak English, which is why there's no requirement to speak Tagalog to go, but it was still nice. I feel like the beginning of a semester would be stressful."

Don’t you also love kids? It sounds like a great experience, honestly. I’m glad you were able to go and it seems like you really made a difference while you were there.

“I get that a lot from men. But because we didn’t sleep together I’m going to assume you’ve just read my books.”

“Sorry, I don’t know what books you’re talking about.”

Oh my gosh, Max! That’s incredible. I knew it’d been a while since I’d seen you, but I hadn’t realized you were out of town. How was it?

“It was a lot of fun. It was nice to be able to put some of my lesser used nursing skills to work. It was a lot of kids that I was working with, and they were just so much fun. I was the only nurse that spoke Tagalog, so I think they were excited about that.”

“That sounds incredible! Did you get to enjoy the country at all outside of work?”

“It was really great. I had a little free time, but not a lot. I’ve been before, though. I have family there still.”

“I’m sorry– what was? I missed something.”

“I was in the Philippines for the last month doing nursing work.”

Did you just get through a really difficult delivery?

“No, I just spent the last month in the Philipines doing nursing work.”

“Where were you?”

“I was in the Philippines for a nursing mission trip.”

“That was honestly one of the best experiences of my life thus far, I have to say.”

“Okay, okay– Best life experience you’ve had, so far?” The blonde asked, raising an eyebrow at the person whose time she’d taken up at least a half hour of as she sat at the bar.

“Easy,” Max said, sipping his beer. “First time I held each of my nieces and nephews, combined with not having delivered them. What about you?”

Ellie laughed, winding her fingers tightly through his. “If you could carry me through this crowd I’d be impressed.” Everywhere she looked it seemed there were throngs of bodies; apparently everyone in Rockford almost had made it to the event. She sat down with relief, her face showing as much. “I am, yeah. I like it when we’re on our own best, but I can’t complain much about this. The dancing, everyone dressed up, nice decorations- I’m a sucker for it. Are you having fun?”

Max didn’t let go of her hand as they sat, but loosened his grip slightly, smiling as he listened to her talk. “I’m having a wonderful time. I’m with the most beautiful woman here and at least very close to the most intelligent one here as well,” he told her. “I like getting dressed up every now and again. It’s fun when you’re with the right company.”

Sleep came quickly after that, in a way she was sure it wouldn’t have if she’d have stuck it out alone at home; it was a deep sleep, and a dreamless one too, instead of the fitful ones she usually had after a difficult night at work. She was still tired when she woke up - nothing was ever going to change the late hour (or early, technically) they had finally gone to sleep - but not as tired as she could of been. The warmth of a Rockford summer day now in the room around them, she kicked the sheets off her legs as carefully as she could, before twisting around gently in the arms still holding her to peer up at Max.

Max had slept peacefully with Ellie in his arms and began to wake as she moved, glancing at the clock on his nightstand. It was earlier than he usually got up for the evening but he didn’t mind, smiling as she turned to face him. “Good morning,” he murmured to her, rubbing her back lightly with one hand. “How’d you sleep?”
