K ira lightly bowed her head nd grinned as wide as her face could manage. “Awh, it’s lovely to meet you!” She clapped her hands together with excitement as she started to follow after her. “Oh, am I.” She scoffed teasingly as she took her phone out. “It won’t be too hard though with as photogenic this little babe is.”

“Ha, you’re absolutely right!” Maya beamed down at the little pup as she paused to allow Kira to snap a few pictures for the fliers. A gentle breeze rustled by while Maya zipped up her jacket slowly. Between work and daily chores she hardly made the time to go out and socialize with actual people let alone meet anyone new. Although Maya always tried to be as friendly as possible with everyone she met, her eventual reserved front never failed to pop up and prevent any lasting relationships.

She cleared her throat suddenly, determined to break this “distant curse” as she smiled back down towards the young woman. “So Kira, are you from around here?”

“Well that might just because you are an actually dog snatcher.” Nakoma mused and smiled over to his sister. Seeing her holding the pup in her made the firebender think back to old times wishing they could obtain the memory of having a family animal. Their parents weren’t very keen on letting their children have pets in the house, but that didn’t stop Nakoma trying to sneak some so called pets into the house. “Awh poor little guy!” He pouted to the pup scratching his ear. “It’s not fun to be lost. No it isn’t.”

Nakoma looked at his sister with wide eyes. “My jacket? Why do you need my jacket?” He inquired though he still took of his jacket anyway. “Maya what are you up to now?”

“Well, now that you aaask,” She turned cheekily away from her brother as to spare herself from his next reaction. “If we have to go to my work to make the copies then we are going to have to hide the dog while we go in,” Maya knelt down to scoop the pooch up in her arms while covering it up inside Nakoma’s jacket.

“There, completely camouflaged!” Maya snuggled the pup in her arms gently before glancing back at her brother, “So the only question is, should you hold him or I?”

Kita smiled slightly when she mentioned how name sounded intuitive. “Ha thanks, but I’m pretty sure my Mom gave me the name because it rhymed with my sisters.” He chuckled scratching the back of his head. “We are twins so I guess you can figure why they rhyme, but back to the original topic. Yes! I would.” The pup kept close as they neared closer to the park asking around if anybody had lost their dog, but it seemed to be no luck so far. “Hmm… don’t they have a little doggie park within the park? Or am I just imagining it?”

- "A twin?" Maya gave the boy an impressed glance, "That's pretty awesome! So what's her matching name?" 

They both strolled on for a block or two before making their way to the park. Maya reached down to carry the dog so that the people Kita asked could get a better look. "You know, I actually have a younger brother myself. No cool matching names with us though," she shot him a quick smirk before mulling over his question of the dog park. "You know, I'm going to be honest, I've lived here for a while but I have never actually been all of the way through the park. So for all I know, there very well might be an actual dog park somewhere in here."

Ara nodded her head and chuckled. Small talk was literal torture for her. She didn’t know how to converse with people because she had done so well with not for so long. It was a little off-putting to be in a situation where she actually wanted to be on good terms with this familiar stranger. “The music loop that they have is so riveting.” She smirked sarcastically as she turned her machine on and leaned against the dryer while speaking to her.

“Well, on Thursday we’re going to dinner with my dad for the first time, but after that I don’t think we’ve got anything going on.” As she spoke it was kind of a little blast of reality of how serious their relationship had grown. She obviously didn’t mind, but it just wasn’t something that she thought about all the time. “Do you have anything special going on?”

- “Wow, really!?!” Maya eyes widened at the idea of Nakoma meeting Ara’s father for the first time, “That sounds extremely exciting.” Her voice tried to hold back laughter from the mental images popping up in her head. In all honestly Maya was fairly stoked to hear how serious their relationship was becoming. Nakoma and Ara had been together for quite some time now and with each passing visit, he seemed to be getting happier and happier.

She rolled her tongue around in her mouth as she tried to remember her work schedule for the end of the week, “Actually, I think I’m free this weekend too,” Maya looked back up at Ara almost surprised to hear herself speak those words. “I would be tempted to invite you both over for dinner or something but I feel like Nakoma may need that time to mentally recover from Thursday first,” she smirked joking as her mental images seeped back in. “So scale from 1 to 10, how nervous does he seem?”

K ira laughed and shook her head. “No, I don’t find it crazy at all. It’s heroic of sorts, don’t cha think?” Her smile spread more widely at this stranger’s kindness. “I’m Kira. There’s no longer strangers.” She giggled before moving her attention back to the dog. “Posters does sound like a good idea though. We can hang them up around the area to try and find their momma or daddy.”

- “Well, its a pleasure to meet you, Kira! My name’s Maya,” she grinned warmly at the young girl while standing up to dust herself off. “So here’s my plan,” Maya began leading the way towards the Rehabilitation Center slowly, “I only know of one place to get some free print offs and that would be where I work.” She turned toward the girl once more with a mischievous grin, “Are you good with a camera?”

Kita returned her smiled kindly. “I’m Kita and that’s a really cool name it that watertribe or something? Oh and you didn’t bother me at all.” He asked curiously as the dog went to jump on him. The boy laughed holding him up with his paws against his chest. “Yeah there is no way this guy is a stray. Just look at how sweet he his.” He looked back to Maya. “Maybe the owner is still around the park?”

- “Ah! Very intuitive, Kita,” Maya smiled brightly at the boy as she cocked her head towards the goofy pup. “I’m not sure if the name runs in the family but I am a waterbender.” She knelt back down to pet the dog once more, “And that’s actually a great idea! I didn’t even realize how close the park is from here. He probably just strayed a little too far and got lost. Wanna tag along to check with me?”

Nakoma chuckled and rose to his feet with a wide grin still patting the dog’s scruffy head. “Do you know where the nearest pet store is? Also he might belong to someone already so we should check that before we just randomly give someone’s dog away.” He chuckled before looking to Maya with a devious grin. “An adventure? Hell yeah lets go on an adventure!” He laughed giving her a high five. “Such a sweet dog though. I can’t imagine if someone gave him away could you?”

“Psh! You act like I’m some kind of dog snatcher,” Maya snorted defensively. “Making fliers is the first thing on the list. Then the pet store two blocks down from that bakery in town,” She bent down to pick up the pooch continuing forward to her work. “I really doubt that he’s a give away. Probably just lost or something.”

Maya drudged on slowly for a few steps before turning to her brother abruptly, “Wait. This is a dog. This is a dog and I’m going into my work with a dog. I don’t know of any other printers that I can get access to for free..” she bit her lip for a second before grinning miniackly at him, “Take off your jacket! I have a terrible idea!”

K ira gasped at the sighed of the adorable beast and sank to her knees to pet it graciously. “Oh, my god no, but I wish.” She whined out as her hand moved over the dog’s coat. “Does he have a collar at all?”

- “Afriad not,” Maya frowned and she welcomed the stranger beside her. “He just seems too well behaved to be a stray.” Maya sat still for half of a minute before turning toward the young woman abruptly, “Hey! Would you want to help me make fliers in case he’s missing?” As soon as the question left her mouth Maya cracked with laughter, “Oh wow. That must sound so crazy coming from a complete stranger!”

Kita glanced over the woman with her dog with a slight smile thinking the two were just having a lovely adventure in the park for the afternoon. It came as a sudden surprise to the airbender when she asked if it was his dog. “Oh no no no.” He waved his hands up in front of him. “My mom wouldn’t allow me to have a dog as fluffy as this one in our small apartment.” He explained scratching behind the doggy’s ear. “My sister would be head over heels for him though. Do you think he is a stray?”

- “Dang,” Maya exhaled in defeat. “He doesn’t have a collar or anything like that so I’m afraid he may not have a home. But it doesn’t hurt to ask!,” She got up from the ground dusting herself off before extending her hand and a smile to the unfamiliar young man,

“My name is Maya by the way. Sorry for the strange distraction from your walk!”

Amber’s eyebrows rose as she heard her name being mentioned, the only people she knew in Republic city was the people she came here with, and although this voice sounded familiar it wasn’t anyone of the people she came with. She was pleasantly surprised when the face greeting her was non-other than Maya. She never really had a problem with Maya, in fact her company was always quite pleasant; however given the circumstances of the break-up Amber wasn’t too sure how to react. Her throat cleared awkwardly a tender smile rested upon her lips. “Maya, it’s been such a long time…” Amber spoke awkwardly.

A small chuckle washed over her as she brushed off the initial shock and greeted Amber more warmly, "I'm so sorry about that! I don't know what came over me getting so tongue-tied. It's just like you said, it's been forever since I've seen you," Maya trailed off for a brief moment to get a better look at her. It was so strange to think of how much could happen and change in just a matter of years and what small details remained the same despite it all. Looking at her now immediately brought back all of the memories Maya could have sworn she had forgotten about long ago. For Maya, Amber was like the younger sister Elza never wanted to be. And in all honesty, the further her actual sister pushed her away, the closer Amber became to her.

Although Nakoma never spoke of the details of their break-up, Maya had a strong feeling that it didn't end on the best of terms for either of them so she decided it best not to even bring up her brother,

"I've actually been very well! I live here in Downtown and I've been working at the Rehabilitation Center in the city for the past 2 and a half years now. I don't know how I got so lucky because I honestly love everything about it," She let out another embarrassing laugh at how ridiculous she must be sounding.

"But enough about my boring self, what about you?? Last time I heard you were on your way to joining the Navy," Maya gestured to her patched jacket with a brimming smile, "Looks like you're all that and more."

Nakoma gasped suddenly and clutched at his chest when he witnessed the most adorable dog he had ever seen yet. “Nuuuuuu, but I wish I had the money to afford him because I would defiantly keep him.” He cooed crouching forward to hug and pet the dog. “Looks like he is a little hungry Maya-naise.” He chuckled as the dog licked over his face. “Should we go get him some doggy food?”

- “Jeeze! I didnt even notice it was you!” Maya scoffed at her brother as the pup greeted him with kisses. “Doggy food may be a good idea. And maybe a collar too. Oh and probably a home if we can find one,” Maya got up and dusted off her pants before shooting her brother a devious glance.

“How’s about an adventure, Naki?”

It had only been a few days since Amber had left the Fire Nation and settled into a small flat in Republic city with a select number of friends from her previous studies. She was already begging to feel homesick, her thoughts drifted towards her family - namely her younger brother Kai. Amber shook her head, trying to dismiss the thoughts, she would return home in no time at all and join the Fire Nation Navy; then she would see him again. In order to take her mind off home, she took what little money she needed and sent herself towards the one market square she remembered the way to. 

The market place was lively, the sound of laughter and other peoples voices filled the air. The sun was high up in the sky, beaming down; gracing them with warmth. A content sigh parted from her lips as she looked upon the various exotic stalls; one thing she knew for sure was that Republic City sure was a place of diversity - she had never seen so many different foods or items from other Nations. It sure wasn’t the same as the Fire Nation. In Amber’s awe at all the weird and wonderful things, she didn’t notice the person she was now on a collision course with. Amber quickly attempted to spin out of the way, pushing her hair from her face. “I’m dreadfully sorry, I didn’t see you there!”

The warm sun pranced across her face as Maya slipped her way seamlessly in and out of the congested marketplace. Weekends were always some of the markets busiest days and with the beautiful weather it was no surprise to how quickly the place crowded up in a matter of hours. I knew I should have woken up at 7 instead of 8:30, Maya huffed to herself impatiently. As she skimmed her small grocery list once more a woman nearly pirouetted her way right into her, twirling around apologetically. A small chuckle left her throat at the mere sight of such an elegant accident. However, once she met the woman’s familiar eyes, her laughter almost instantly transformed into a choke.

“A-Amber?” Maya managed to spit out awkwardly. It had been years since she had seen or even heard from her brother’s ex. She forced a quick smile in attempts to hide her shock while stumbling to find some other words to offer her.

“I-um, H-hi?”

Her heart immediately leaped as a loud gasp escaped her lungs before jerking herself to a half rotation. It was a sudden tug at her pants leg that caused the waterbender to almost lose her lunch but the culprit was far furrier than she expected. Maya smiled to herself and sighed as she knelt down to indulge her friendly unexpected greeter. A passerby neared their way closer to them casually as Maya halfway glanced up before exchanging a hopeful acknowledgement, “Excuse me, this wouldn’t happen to be your dog would it?”

Ara winced when she realized how negligent she had been about actually looking at the person she was borrowing money from. A small embarrassed smile curled her lip. “Hey,” she breathed out as she put the money into the machine. “Sorry I didn’t even notice it was you. I’ve been in my own little world tonight.” She adjusted the settings and the machine started going. She hated how distracted she had been tonight. It probably wasn’t safe especially with the way the city had been becoming more and more dangerous.

There was a long moment of silence between them while Ara gathered her thoughts.

“So um,” She started a little unsure after she had finally started speaking. “What have you been up to?” She asked in conversational tone. She wasn’t the most experienced with small talk but she didn’t exactly want to be on bad terms with Nakoma’s sister. He did care deeply for her.

- “Oh, no worries!” Maya laughed, “If you would have asked me any later you’d probably have found me on the floor unconscious. I was so zoned out that I didn’t even notice another person was here at first.” She picked at the end of her jacket awkwardly as Ara turned away to continue with her laundry. The follow-up question almost caught her off guard as a quick “Oh” escaped from her mouth before she attempted to conjure up a worthy response.

“Well, I just got off work a few hours ago and almost forgot that it was laundry day. This will be going on week 3 that I’ve been out of a dryer at my apartment so nothing really exciting there. That is unless you count almost memorizing the 7 different songs they have playing on repeat here,” Maya chuckled again uncomfortably.

“But hey, what’s been going on with you? You and Nakoma have any plans for this coming up weekend?”

Avira took a breath as she tried to regain her balance and get a baring of her surroundings again. Throughout the tumble it seemed to shatter all that she knew about the world.

She let out a polite, conversational chuckle when the woman had joked that it took more than a collision to mess her up. She was in a mild disbelief, because this really felt like it messed her up. She still felt a little dizzy from rolling, and her head was pounding and felt hot.

“Oh,” She said moving her hand to her forehead and pulling it away to see blood on her fingertips. “I guess I have.” She said moving her hand back and held it there with pressure.

Avira was a little shocked to see such kindness being offered. Living in the city for so long had really made her a little less expecting of people. “Oh wow, I can’t! I feel so badly. I’ve already caused all of this. I can’t inconvenience you anymore.”

- Maya let out a small laugh at the woman’s overly polite remark, “What, are you kidding?? This is literally what I do for a living, it’s absolutely no trouble at all!” She quickly retrieved her purse from the ground, pulling out a bottle of water and pouring a small puddle of it into her palm. As the water made its way to the woman’s wound it was a matter of seconds before her head was completely healed.“See, no trouble at all!” A smile spread across the waterbender’s face to reassure the woman before reaching out a greeting hand, “By the way, my name’s Maya.”

His sight was limited on the vague atmosphere that seemed to look over their presence as she still try and resume this dry conversation. Milu was at a loss of words since her very being sitting next to him was enough to frighten him to his core. Each time he would look at Maya it would only regurgitate the painful memory to the fourth of his mind of how Ba-. No. That part of himself had died and rotted into the earth long ago therefore the thought of it did not exist to begin with. Now she was only a stranger. Another floating face in a crowd that he hadn’t need to reckon with.

A cool draft shyly kissed the back of his neck giving him another reason to shiver. Knowing that her eyes were preoccupied with the surroundings, Milu could feel himself breath a little easier. At least she wasn’t expecting much for him to answer or so he thought. Milu allowed a small sigh to part his lips while he looked over to the card placed in her grasp. His brows furrowed and he could feel himself getting unreasonably angry at her. “Are you gonna give me back my card?” He asked sounding a slightly harsh in his voice

- She remained completely stiff as he spoke, hoping that somehow in her stillness she could be taken away with the next passing breeze. Why was he here? What did he want? Where was Bato? Her repeated unanswered questions burrowed further and further into her skin until she physically squirmed under her own mental discomfort. With her noticeable cringe she locked eyes back at this now stranger sitting next to her. Her eyes searched desperately for a long moment as if the all of the answers laid layers away behind his shared stare but just as she expected the stillness did not cease. Swallowing the thoughts that welled in her mind, Maya gently placed the card beside her on the bench before dismissing herself without any further responses or gestures.

                   Maya Omasu Character study: Bending 

The oldest of the 3 Omasu children left Maya little room for mistakes. She was expected to master her waterbending skills with a certain pose and maturity to which she would then be expected to reflect a perfect example onto her younger siblings. This strict molding sharpened her bending tremendously and allowed her to broaden her capabilities at an abnormal pace. These techniques followed her throughout her career in waterbending and particularly flowered when she began practicing bloodbending with her ex-boyfriend, Bato.

 He was able to expand Maya's skills like never before, bestowing her with his own elaborate methods that he had mastered over the years. With him she obliviously discovered new shortcuts and ferociously practiced what she absorbed, making it her permanent second language. To her, being away from home for the first time and being able to freely delve in a new art form was a luxury she didn't want to devalue. It wasn't until she learned that their seemingly harmless exercises weren't just for mere learning and exploration purposes but for actual disturbing acts that Maya grew fearful of her newfound talents.

 Bato had taught her everything from sensing other people from far away distances by means of only their blood circulation to being able to control multiple bodies without any noticeable external motion. As an unfortunate result, to this day Maya is unable to view a stranger without first noticing their own unique internal map of complex arteries and veins.
