Wanting to spend more time with Ladybug, Chat suggests the two don disguises and hang out as civilians.

When the two venture out, big sunglasses and hats galore, they soon realize that pretending this isn’t a date might be just as hard as protecting their identities.

AO3 Ch. 1

Chapter 2

Marinette’s eyes widened as Chat started towards the bakery. Panicking, she dug her feet in the ground and froze. It took Chat a few steps before he noticed she wasn’t following him and turned around. Marinette looked at the floor, kicking a small rock with her foot as she tried to decide her next step.

“What’s wrong?” Chat asked. He furrowed his eyebrows and leaned in closer, laying a hand on Marinette’s shoulder.

“I… er… can’t go in there!” She stammered, “Yeah! Just no. Not doing that!”

“Why not?”

“Oh… you know… just-because-er… Marinette and all that”

Chat paused, seeming to recognize the name that Marinette had accidentally let slip.

Face pulled into a confused expression, he said, “Marinette? What’s wrong with her? Are we both talking about the same girl? Marinette Dupain-Cheng? Why would anyone try to avoid Marinette Dupain-Cheng?”

Startled by Chat’s remembrance of her civilian persona, and desperately trying to steer the conversation away from her secret identity, Marinette replied, “Chat, it’s nothing… I guess the two of us just never really got along. Let’s just say I’m not-um- particularly fond of her. Anyways…”

She stopped talking when she looked up and saw Chat look way more offended by her statement than he had any right to be. If anything, she should be the one taking offense at her words, even if she was the one who said them.

Chat started talking a mile a minute, acting like his life depended on the defense of Marinette’s honor.

“I’m positive you don’t have the right idea of who Marinette is. She’s absolutely amazing! Maybe you too got off on the wrong foot, or maybe you just misunderstood something she said. Marinette is the kindest, smartest, and most caring person I know. She’s always there to help a hand if you need it, and she puts her heart and soul into everything she does. I don’t think she realizes how much of a positive impact she has when she does this. She was there for me when I needed consoling after… uh… well just when I needed to talk to someone, and if I’m being honest, she’s the only reason I succeeded at the Evillistator battle without you. If you have a problem with Marinette, something must have happened.”

Oh. Marinette felt her face start to heat up, the blood vessels in her cheeks refusing to behave. Drawing her eyes to the floor, she idly flexed her feet and stood on her heels, going over Chat’s words in her mind. He seemed so sincere, and she was afraid that if she looked up into his eyes he would know that she had been affected by what he said. Which she shouldn’t be, because he hadn’t even been talking about her, but technically he had been, but, ugh! He couldn’t know that.

This was it. Marinette was just going to continue the rest of her life looking down at this very interesting pavement and never look Chat in the eye again. She was a superhero! She couldn’t afford to get flustered!

“Ladybug, are you blushing???”

“What! No, no way! Why would I be blushing?”

As Marinette finally looked up, she was surprised to see Chat peering down at her, and the ridiculous sunglasses he wore did nothing to erase the way his scrunched eyebrows and intense gaze zeroed in on her.

After a few tense seconds that seemed to last forever, Chat stepped back and laughed, full bodied laughs that shook his shoulders and made him hold his hand to his chest.

He had barely stopped laughing before he could spit out, “Oh! Of course! M’Lady, I get now why you kept turning down the advances of someone as dashing as me; you clearly have a crush on Marinette! Why didn’t you just tell me you play for the other team?”

WHAT??? Marinette screamed on the inside. Did Chat think he had a crush… on herself?

She had to correct this immediately before her life got any more confusing. “I do not! Have a crush! On Marinette Dupain-Cheng? I just- It’s that… And as a matter of fact Chat, I play for both teams, but we’re getting off subject. The point is, I absolutely 100% do not have a crush on Marinette.”

Chat seemed unconvinced, his ever permanent smirk growing tenfold. “Hmmm, Ladybug, who are you trying to convince here, me or yourself? And if you don’t have a crush on Marinette, why else would you feel nervous going into the bakery?”

Great. She’d really done in now, hadn’t she. Put herself into a corner all over again. It seemed there was really only one way out of this situation.

“Fine Chat, you’re right. I have a crush on Marinette Dupain-Cheng.”

Adrien didn’t know how to feel at the moment. He’d thought about figuring out who Ladybug’s mysterious crush was more than he’d like to admit, always wondering who was lucky enough to steal his lady’s heart. But he hadn’t expected it to be someone he knew, let alone Marinette.

How in the world was he supposed to compete with Marinette Dupain-Cheng? She was one of the coolest people he knew! In fact, the coolest after Ladybug. No wonder Ladybug fell in love with her, and no wonder he never had a chance.

He had to stop with these self deprecating thoughts, this wasn’t about him right now, this was about Ladybug. The girl in front of him hesitantly met his gaze, waiting for a reply. It was in that moment that Adrien resolved to put his own feelings aside and help Ladybug as a friend.

He would always put her happiness over his own, and if the way to do that was to set her up with one of his closest friends, he would be more than willing to do so. He could cry about the situation and mope about his lack of a chance later, and he mentally made a note to buy more camembert. Plagg would be hearing a lot more sad teenage ramblings.

Ladybug interjected again, “Oh! Chat! Yeah… that’s right! I can’t go in and see Marinette, I’m just er- so overcome by my love for her! I think about my crush, which is totally Marinette, all the time.” Her eyes got glassy as she continued on, “My crush is just so kind, and caring, and always makes an effort to help as many people as possible. I always trip over myself and stumble through my words whenever we’re near each other, and I um- couldn’t possibly go into the bakery right now. I’d just embarrass myself”

Adrien again ignored the pang in his heart and forced himself to smile. Ladybug really was in love. Her description also seemed eerily familiar, and he couldn’t help but picture his clumsy friend. “I think you two would get along great together.”

He continued, “but fear not, M’Lady. As your brave Pawrtner, the dashing Chat Noir, I will venture into the bakery myself and single handedly return with two of the best croissants in all of Paris.”

She smiled softly, and tucked a piece of hair behind her ear. “Thanks Chat, I appreciate  how understanding you are.”

When Sabine saw her daughter leave the bakery in a hat that was way too big, and sunglasses that covered most of her face, she didn’t really think too much of it. Marinette had always known more about fashion than she did. It was probably a new style all the kids were into.

Her theory was confirmed when a blonde boy about Marinette’s age waltzed into the store wearing a snapback and shades in the same fashion.

This kid seemed familiar, but Sabine couldn’t quite put her finger on where she knew him from. He wrung his hands together as he approached the counter, shoulders slumped and bottom lip slightly trembling.

“Can I- can I get two croissants?” He sniffled.

Sabine couldn’t see his eyes behind the sunglasses, but she could guess that his eyes were starting to water.

This wouldn’t do.

“Sure thing, and I don’t know what’s going on right now, but I’m sure that whatever it is, you’re going to get through it, okay?”

The boy looked up and said, “thank you, Ma’am” before paying for his order and heading back towards the door.

Right before he left, Sabine watched as he straightened his posture and plastered a smile on his face, the action bringing back the eerie sense of familiarity she felt earlier.

“Have a nice day!” was the last thing he said before exiting onto the street.

An hour later, when Marinette walked back into the bakery, Sabine was too preoccupied with taking some cookies out of the oven to greet Marinette at the counter. Partially hidden, she watched as Marinette took off her sunglasses and headed for the stairs, her hands shaking, but a genuine smile lighting up her features nonetheless.
