I couldn't get away - Self Para
By the time someone finally sat down across from him it had been two hours since he entered the room and his patience long gone. He tried to resist from smirking the other man's seat creaked under his weight. Henry stared back at the plump detective, his grey hair poked through the frames of his glasses as they set on top of his ears. He knew that his own appearance wasn't much better, he had dark purple circles under his eyes, as he hadn't slept much since he found out Carolina survived the fire, and his cheeks were sunken in from years of drug abuse as well as lack of proper nourishment.
The detective, whose name was apparently Donald Watson, introduced himself and then placed a sketch down on the table top. It appeared to be the jaw of a man, "Do you recognize this man?"Â
Henry leaned forward and took the image in, "No." He could tell that the answer had surprised the older gentleman, but he was telling the truth.Â
"I see." Henry waited for Watson to ask him more questions about the picture but instead he moved on, "Do you want to tell me how your fingerprints got all over the car?"Â
"I was driving it." He spoke with a shrug as he sat back in his chair, his wrists were cramping from being handcuffed but the new position eased any discomfort in his back,Â
"Where were you going?"
Henry sniffled, "That piece of shit storage facility."Â
Watson shifted in his seat, "What were you doing there?"
"Are you trying to make me confess?" Asked Henry, tired eyes glared across the table, "Look, I'll tell you everything that I know, but I have to admit that it's less than you probably think..."Â
"Just answer the question."
Henry shook his head, "I was there to clean up the scene."Â
"What scene?"Â
"Are you fucking kidding me?" He hobbled his chair closer to the table, "I don't appreciate your little head games, asshole." Henry had been working with the king of headgames for months and he was done, it was enough, he was tired of all of the bullshit. "Did you find any fingerprints in the storage? Before it all came down to the ground? No. Because I fucking cleaned the place up."
Watson said nothing as he pulled the sketch of the killer's jaw away from Henry's view and replaced it with a picture of Carolina Baker, "Do you recognize this woman?"
"Yeah, it's Carolina Baker." He rolled his eyes, "She's the reason why I'm in here, and not with my family."Â
"Where is your family, Henry?"
Henry croaked out a laugh, "I'm not fucking telling you." Truth was, he didn't know where his family was. Â When he found out that Carolina had survived the fire, he told his wife that she needed to take the kids and get out of town. As far as she could go, and to not ask questions.Â
"Are they in danger? We can protect them."
"Protect them? Just like you protected Beth Houston? Last I heard she had to leave the COUNTRY to get away. I'm not so sure she's even safe there, but that's not my problem." Henry threw his head back, "I'm here, me being here, that's me protecting them. I don't need your help. It's useless."
"Do you know something we don't?" Asked Watson, referring to Beth Houston. "How are you keeping them safe?"
"I don't know shit about Beth Houston, only what I've heard on the news. I'm not apart of that." Henry brought his head down and refocused on Watson, "Because I'm here. I'm owning up to my mistake."
"Do you know who was?" He raised a brow, "What have you been apart of?"Â
"No, I don't. I mean. the same guy who's been behind all of this shit since last year, but I don't know if it was anyone else, or how many people." Henry thought about Watson's question as he tried to remember everything that he had done for the man, "I stole a kid's phone at the pub and erased messages, lured that Cossey guy into a trap, I didn't touch him though, stole Carolina's blood from the blood drive, sent a note to Damien Waren, and uh...tried to kill Carolina."Â
"Carolina didn't die. Was that your mistake?" It was a lot for Watson to take in but he acted calm. He believed the man before him but he didn't understand why he would do these things. Henry had a record but none of the crimes were violent and most of them had been from his youth. How did he go from mild theft to murder? "Attempted murder is a very serious crime. If found guilty, you could be facing life in prison."
"Yeah." Henry knew that he should have killed her before setting the fire, he should have made sure she was dead before leaving, but he hadn't. He replayed the incident over and over in his head. "I know. You don't believe me do you? You think I'm just trying to cover up for him. I'm telling you all I know, I'm not going to confess to shit I didn't do. He wouldn't want me to anyway, some things he likes to keep for himself, you know? This whole thing, this plan of his... it's his baby. And he let me be apart of it, but I fucked up...and you know what? He's making me take the blame for my actions because he doesn't want his reputation tarnished. He wants you to know that he killed those people. Their blood is on his hands, not mine and you better fucking bet that Carolina's will be too, it's only a matter of time."Â
"I believe you, I just want to make sure you know the gravity of your confession." Watson listened carefully and weeded out anything that wasn't dire. He was being given a lot of information at once but two things stuck out to him. The fact that the killer had a plan and that Carolina was not safe. "What's his plan?" He leaned in, "Do you know what he's going to do next?"
"Yeah, I get it." Henry let out another laugh, "His plan? Oh, who the fuck knows. It makes no sense." He shook his head as his laughter died down, "He thinks this town isn't pure enough or some shit like that, everyone's got secrets and they're all bad people anyway."Â
"So, it's a religious thing?"
"No, no, not really. I mean, he doesn't seem like he goes to church you know? I mean, he never quoted the bible or anything like that."Â
"Is he going to do something to Carolina?"
"Yeah, probably. I don't know what, or when though. He only tells me what he wants me to know, just enough to get the job done." Henry shrugged, "I'm not involved now."Â
"But you were before. Were you part of his plan?"
"I guess so. He used me, yeah, and I let him But I didn't agree with his plan. I was in it for the money..."
Watson tilted his head up and scratched his chin, everything was starting to make more sense now. "Is that why you were working with him? Because he was offering you money?"Â
Henry gave a short nod, "A thousand bucks to play around with some guy's phone."Â
"And to kill Carolina?"
"Ten thousand dollars." He knew that no amount of money would justify killing someone. "I know it sounds bad, but I have kids. I needed to support them."Â
Watson dropped his hands to the top of the table, "You're not the only one who's struggled around here."
"I know that, but maybe I'm just a little more desperate than the average person." Henry couldn't look at the officer as he continued to speak, instead he kept his eyes on the picture of Carolina, "The more money he offered the higher the risk. By the time I realize where it was heading, my family was already in danger. The threat was always there, it had been there from the beginning, but it just started seeming more real, like he was going to kill them if I didn't help, and he was still offering money."
"You don't have to let him. Help us, we can find him with your help. Your wife, your kids, they can be protected."
"I've already told you that the police can't protect them. And no, I don't know where he is. Like I've said, he only tells me what he wants me to know. I've never even seen his face." Henry lifted his chin, "That was it, wasn't it? It was his jaw. Stupid bastard. A fucking tease."Â
"Henry, we can find him."
Henry kicked the ground, a wince following the action. His leg still hurt from when Carolina threw him on the ground. "I've told you everything that I know. Everything that he wants you to know. I'm not leaving any detail out. You can keep asking me but it's not going to change the fact that I don't know who he is, where he is, what he looks like..." Henry tossed his head back again to ease stiffness in his neck, "You want to know where I met him right? On craigslist. I was looking for a plumbing job and the guy contacted me. We exchanged emails and the next thing I knew I was being paid to do little jobs. Never used the same email twice, couldn't remember them. Maybe you can hack into my computer. I don't fucking know. But this is all I do know, and I'm tired. I don't want to put up with your questions anymore. "
Watson remained still, he hardly even flinched when Henry kicked the table. "Alright, I think we're done here." He had gotten more out of Henry than he ever expected, "Thank you for your time, Mr. Allman." Watson stood from his seat and pushed it in. He grabbed his belonings and headed for the door, "Someone will be back shortly to take you back to your cell."Â
"Go fuck yourself." Henry watched as the round officer exited the room with a disgruntled huff, slamming the door behind him. He took in a deep breath and closed his eyes. Henry had given everything that was asked of him, but he kept one thing to himself. His life was going to come to an end.
