“Who’s talkin’ shit? It ain’t a crime to pass on the sex talk, is it? I know how that shit works, but I sure as hell don’t need the mental image of you two goin’ at it.”
“Oh yeah? You think you know how that shit works, huh? Do you really, though? ‘cause if you did, you’d be cheerin’ us on.”
“Talk shit, get owned, boy.”

The knock had been gentle, but Atsuko was sober enough to recognize when someone was at the door. Cocking an eyebrow, she picked up her glass and carried it with her, cigarette strategically placed between her pointer and middle finger and resting against the glass.
Pulling open the door, Atsuko found herself looking down at the small blonde haired girl. She was dressed in the uniform from the local high school and looked a bit nervous as she stood outside the apartment door.
Leaning her free arm against the door frame, she looked down at the girl with her eyebrow raised.
“Can I help you?”
maggiestein:
She breathed a silent sigh of relief at the woman’s positive response - like mother like son she supposed and her posture relaxed somewhat, pausing to take another drink, a small smile flickering at the corners of her lips.
“Yes, I do…it’s nice to meet you, Atsuko.” she murmured quietly, setting her glass down on the bar top, “We don’t work with one another, no - we spar fairly frequently though…he’s one the first person I haven’t felt the need to pull my punches with…must get that from you.”
Atsuko chuckled as she took a mouthful of her own drink, swishing it once in her mouth before swallowing. She set her glass back down for the moment, wanting to savor what she had before she hit her buzz. The night was young, and the company was pleasant for once.
“He’s always picking fights, that boy,” she said with a shake of her head, though her expression spoke bounds about how proud of her son she was. “Since he was a little boy, he was always looking for his next big challenge.” Her eyes drew back up to Maggie’s, a mischievous glint in her brown ones. “I hope you’re giving him his fair share of ass kicking. Put that boy in his place once in a while.”

“Give me one of those.” Not even going to await an answer, Shizuru stepped forward, grasping one of the many cans of beer that sat on the table (specifically an unopened one) and quickly popped it open. She could really use a drink after the day she had.
“Kazuma’s been out all day and I didn’t see Yusuke at his little stand, something going on?”
The cans were lined up on the table, the twelve-pack having been unloaded maybe half an hour prior. Three cans had already been drained with two more on the table and six others in the fridge.
Atsuko held a drink in her hand, regarding the younger woman with a small smile. She would never turn down a drinking buddy. Besides, Shizuru was good company to boot.
“A client came lookin’ for him the other day. Must’ve been a good gig if he dragged Kazuma-kun around,” she replied before taking another swig of her current can. “Keiko-chan came around last night. Yusuke told her he’d be back by end week at the latest.”
Dropping her feet down from her seat, socks touching carpet, she motioned for Shizuru to take a seat in one of the empty chairs at the table.
“I take it it’s not typical for Kazuma not to tell you when he’s going out with Yusuke?” she guessed.
uurameshii:
Yusuke’s gaze wandered down to the makeshift ice pack, lips pursing to a thin line. How long had he been ignoring his injuries? He tended to them to a certain degree to avoid infection and any serious problems, but he was far too busy to keep up with it as well as he would’ve liked to. Besides, he had done his best to maintain appearances. He couldn’t allow his enemies to see him vulnerable.
“Tell me about it…” Letting out a heavy sigh, he ran his fingers through his hair. He learned that lesson the hard way, though he’d spare his mother the details. The last thing he wanted was to worry her any more than he was sure he already had. “I guess I should take a day or two to rest, huh?” A day or two wouldn’t hurt, would it? He’d been running himself ragged working at the ramen stand, as well as ensuring street punks and neighboring gangs didn’t encroach on his turf.
Sometimes he missed being at home. He had the safety of Jibun No Yoru, as well as his mother to offer him advice and provide him with whatever else he needed. Yet… He knew full well that there was no going back. He’d made his choice and he’d stick to it even if he regretted it later down the line. His stubbornness and pride wouldn’t allow him to quit when he’d come so far already. He’d find his father, and everyone would know the name of Toshin, leader of the Demon Kings.
“…What?” He reached for the ice pack, though he’d nearly dropped it from the initial surprise. Keiko…? What the hell would Keiko be doing hanging out with someone like Shizuru Kuwabara and the Demon Broads? “How? Keiko… She’s… She’s got nothin’ in common with that chick. Everyone knows she’s nothin’ but trouble, and Keiko… She’s…”
Not like that?
How would he know? It had been so long since he’d last seen his childhood friend, but it was only to protect her from the dangers that came with the kind of lifestyle he lived. Was she thinking about joining that gang?
Atsuko shot her son a knowing smile, wordlessly agreeing with his thought to take a few days to rest. She knew he was ambitious. The gang had raised him to be more than they could have ever been. There was no questioning his gains or ambition. However, his fault was not knowing when to stop. He’d certainly learned that from her.
“A day or two can go on without you out there causing trouble,” she replied with a teasing smirk as she pulled a cigarette from her pack and placed it between her lips, covering it as she pulled her lighter up to light the end. She inhaled a lungful before pushing it out, leaning her back against the couch cushion behind her.
At Yusuke’s reaction, Atsuko raised an eyebrow. Surely it would have been a rumor that he would have caught wind of before her considering how close Yusuke and Keiko had been growing up. Of course, Atsuko had expected and hoped for better for the girl, but it seemed that she took her relationship with Yusuke more seriously than Atsuko had previously realized. That alone made her start to think of the young woman in a different light.
A familiar light.
“Then I’m guessing you haven’t seen her new look either. She’s bleached her hair from about the shoulders down, too. Bet her parents had a huge fit at their college-bound daughter suddenly joining a gang and bleaching her hair.”
The woman took another drag, an amused look on her face.
maggiestein:
“…it’s not that your face is common - it’s just that I know of only one other person with a smile like yours.” she replied, taking the glass set before her by the bartender and downing half the contents before continuing to speak, “Don’t take this the wrong way, but…do you have a son?”
She had chosen her words carefully - after all, the woman looked quite young; she must have had Yusuke when she was in her early teens.
“…my name is Margaret…most people call me Maggie, though.”
Someone with the same smile as her? That seemed pretty rare; however, once Maggie asked the question about a son, Atsuko couldn’t help the laugh that passed her lips as she pulled her drink toward her, leaning her forearm against the bar as she turned her seat to the side to better face Maggie.
“You must be friends with my boy,” she said. “I’m Atsuko. Atsuko Urameshi.”
She offered another friendly grin across at Maggie.
“Are you one of his work buddies?” she asked curiously. She used the term loosely considering the type of “work” her son did outside working his ramen stand, but this woman seemed like someone who could hold her own. It wouldn’t have surprised her to hear Spirit World had recruited more help.
