The Brenner Twins : Jane & Micki
Like you want me to { Micki
“It was my way of proving to the world that, without the label, no one would know the difference between humans and warlocks,” Lycus replied, a grimace on his face as he refrained from rolling his eyes. To him, witches and warlocks were just humans with magic. They weren’t real monsters – at least until they finally sacrificed their souls entirely and became demons. He hadn’t figured out how all of that worked yet.
Looking the fair-skinned blonde up and down a few times, he tilted his head to the side as he stepped closer to her, closing the distance between them quickly with a few long strides. “No, unfortunately,” he said truthfully, disappointment in his tone, “Some asshole stole you away before I could get my hands on you. But, that’s alright. Maybe I’ll just keep you. On the other hand, sustaining that spell might kill me. But, then again, you’re so damn fine, it might just be worth it.”
Micki didn’t say anything, with the way the man was grimacing, she doubted her sympathizing with human would get her anywhere but in trouble with Mathias. She bit her lip, looking down as he spoke. “And I take it you’ve changed your stance on human sympathizing. From the press you got, I always assumed you were the type to support equal rights, rather than just supernatural rights.”
Micki felt dazed, as if just waking up from a dream, or falling into one. She tilted her head to the side, fingers reaching up to trace the angle of his jaw, then his lips as he spoke. She didn’t fully understand what he was saying, but she did know that she was drawn to him even though her body felt stiff, like her body knew that she should instinctively fear the man in front of her even if her mind hadn’t caught up yet. She bit her lip, nodding as he spoke of keeping her. “You should keep me. I want you to.” She wasn’t sure why she said that, only that she assumed it was what he wanted her to say.
Whenever Jacob was scared, his chest and muscles tightened up, as if to prepare himself for whatever danger that could put his life at risk. Every fiber of his body had gone rigid, and had been since they were told that they had to leave and he had to abandon Pandora’s. If someone came at him, he was prepared to attack and could handle it reflexively. His survival instincts had been honed over the last eight and a half years alone. Danger was a constant threat when you were just some homeless teenager roaming around. Though, because of the way he was – it had been significantly harder for him. He stopped counting the fights he got into after about thirty.
But, this was different. This wasn’t just his life he was defending anymore. Surviving alone was easy compared to this, but he knew now that staying alive and living were too very different things. He’d never felt more alive than the day that they’d kiss. Not the first day they’d ever kissed - because that was a one night stand - but the first day that they shared a simple kiss that meant much more than an evening of sex and no phone call the next day.
Jacob found it difficult to reply to her immediately after she had finished. It was normal for a response to a difficult question to take some time for him. The frayed wires in his head sparked while he thought, trying his best to give his fiance the best possible answer that he could give her without flat lying to her.
His deep contemplation was evident by the vacant, but stern and solemn expression on his features. It was just slightly different from his natural scowl. His lips would occasionally twitch, and his grip tightened on her side just a little, as if to make sure for certain that she was still really there – because every single day, he had to remind himself that she wasn’t just some perfect figment of his imagination that he’d accidentally created to cope with loneliness. He loved her so much.
So damn much.
“What happens if you get hurt?” Jacob finally breathed, the words hard to get out. I’d lose my damn mind, he thought briefly, thinking of everything Keres had said to him. The only reason that he was even alive was because of Micki saving him before he could overdose. It was in that moment that everything changed. Neither of them could live without each other.
It was with that realization that caused Jacob to grab Micki a tad bit too tight. He pulled his hand away from her side immediately, afraid that he might have hurt her.
“Okay,” the werewolf’s chest tightened, constricting the air from his lungs as the word left his mouth. “Fine. But we’re – we’re going to set some ground rules and make some changes to things. I need some piece of mind.”
Micki never worried too much when Jacob went silent. He had different kind so silence and this hadn’t reached his angry silence yet, which is one of the only things that worried her. No, this was his worried, trying to think quiet. She was more than used to this brand of silence and it no longer scared her. Jake was obviously making a conscious effort not to lie to her or outright scare her, so she could hardly all him out on that. She merely brushed his hair behind his ears, watching him intently as he tried to piece together is fragmented thoughts.
His nearly hash grip stopped bothering a long time ago. They would cling to each other so much, it almost felt stranger when he was gripping his hands around her waist. It felt foreign when he was away from her, almost as though she couldn’t breath. Though he was more than difficult at times, she couldn’t live in a world where they didn’t exist together. She knew that not everyone understood him, that not everyone could understand why she loved him as much as she did, but she didn’t care. Her heart would belong to him as long as she lived, as long as either of them lived.
She didn’t waver as he spoke, never tearing her gaze away from his. She bit her lip, thinking herself for a moment. “If it comes to that, we’ll figure it out. I’m not leaving you, through death or anything else. I am not leaving you, do you understand? So you can’t leave me.”
When he yanked his hand away, her fingers own caught his, lacing them together with ease. She bit her lip, staring up at him as she brought his hand to her lips, kissing his knuckles. “Whatever you need, Jake. We’re going to figure this out. What did you have in mind?”

“Well, I am a warlock. You have to know how dark magic works to be able to defend against it,” he lied, knowing full well how dangerously he had plunged into the darkest pit of black magic that he could.
Anger boiled up within him when she reacted defensively when he joked about her ‘mate’. The smile on his face never left, though, even as he contemplated strangling that delicate little neck of hers. “I’d say it was alright, but to be frank, I find the two of you together revolting,” Lycus said, suddenly deciding that he couldn’t even begin to give a fuck about acting anymore. “Let’s play a game of pretend for a little while,” he raised his hand at her, muttering some greek as he tried not to flinch from the swell of magic rising through his body. Pain collocated in his head, but he ignored it. This was so worth the severe misuse of his newfound abilities. “You’re going to be mine or a little while. Sound good? Of course it does.”
“So I’ve gathered.” Micki glanced up at the man, curiosity furrowing her brow. “You kept that a secret for a while, do you mind me asking why?” She asked, teeth chewing on her bottom lip.
At his words, Micki was taken aback, taking a few steps away from him at his outburst. “Excuse me?” She sputtered, confused as to what had come over the man. He had no right to say that to her, much less have an opinion on her relationship to her fiance. Despite his power over her, she was finding summoning her shadows more and more tempting. Glancing around her, she realized that she already did. It was an involutary response at this point. Whenever she felt as though she or someone she cared about was in danger, her body naturally summoned them to protect her. “What.. what are you talking about?” She asked, becoming concerned for the man’s psychiatric well-being. As he started to speak in latin, she shuddered, feeling a dank haze come over her. She felt as though she was floating, as if she was outside of her own body. It was almost peaceful, but she knew it wasn’t. There was something off about this magic, something threatening. Logically, she knew this, but there was nothing she could do to stop it. At his words, she turned to him, confused by what he was saying. She already belonged to the man, didn’t she? He was her mate. “Am I not already yours?” She asked, not fully understanding what was happening, though a small part of her brain was screaming at her to run, run as far away as possible.

“Everyone has a little darkness in them. It’s just a matter of whether or not you embrace it,” he commented, pulling his hands out of his pockets to cross them against his chest. “I’m sure they do, but who cares? I’d rather have a Michelle Brenner original.”
“So, how’s your daughter and your boyff-fiance doing? I heard he took some dragging to get him here. Are you aware that you’re dating a five year old? Who throws tantrums like that?” He joked, a smile on his face that was genuinely fake.
“And you’ve embraced it, have you?” Micki asked, recalling the press on the man had been nothing but positive. She laughed, shaking her head. “I would normally say the same if it weren’t for Ms. Greyson being on the council. She’s not a huge fan of mine and I wouldn’t put it past her to use the wrong shade of blue to string me up in Town’s Square.”
Micki’s teasing expression faded away when Jacob was brought up. “Artemis is fine. As is Jacob. But we’re all still adjusting. He’s much more mature than I am, so really, he’s the one who is engaged to a five year old. And you might not know this, Mr. Sullivan, but he’s been through hell and back. A lot’s happened, he has every right to be pissed. As do all of us. No one likes being told where to live because of their DNA.” She snapped, trying and failing to maintain a civil tone throughout her speech. Closing her mouth, she remembered who she was walking to. “Fu- I’m sorry, Mr. Sullivan. That was inappropriate. I’m just.. protective of my family.”

“Thanks for coming by in such short notice. I’ve been looking for a good artist to paint a mural on this wall,“ Mathias smiled, setting down some paint onto the floor beside the blonde. “I quite enjoy your art. It’s got a darkness in it. You know, kind of like you.”
Micki nodded, smiling as she glanced at the wall and back at the man. “Of course, Mr. Sullivan. It’s an honor really.” She stared at the wall, beaming at the compliment. “That was my intention, glad it caught your eye. Art’s a very natural thing for me, and the darkness is.. a part of that I guess. Did the council want anything specific for the mural?”
“So you would rather I just –” Jacob paused, the battle in his head evident in the way he fidgetted. “ – Not do anything?” He responded to her kiss by wrapping an arm around her petite waist. “I can’t just – I can’t just roll over and play dead. They’ll win if I do that.”
Micki wrapped a loose arm around him, staring up at him with adoration in her eyes, though there was fear boiling beneath the surface. She’d nearly lost him more times than she wanted to think about it. Keres and Lycus weren’t ones to fuck around, and she would be damned if she sat idly by and watched him all but sign his death certificate. “That’s not what I’m saying, but I know you. You’ll charge into this battle alone and without any backup and you can’t fucking do that. You’re not a lone wolf anymore, Jake. You have a family that adores you, that needs you here. And on top of that, who will defend you to our graves. You don’t have to do this alone, Jake. Let me help you.”
“…I miss my bar, Micki. There aren’t any forests here. Just swamp.”
“Jake.. I am sorry. I wish there was something I could do. I..” She closed her mouth, looking down as she tried to find the right words. “I hate this too. But I need you to be safe for me. I want there to be forest for you, but I need you to promise me you won’t do something to get yourself killed. I can’t lose you and neither can Artie.” She reached up to touch his face, pressing a soft kiss into his mouth. “I’m so sorry, Jake.”
“Yes and no… I went away for college, saw a bit of the country, then came back home. I’ve never quite found a place like it. And by that I’m going to assume you mean Harvard? It’s been on the news quite a bit lately…”
“Where did you study? It does seem rather distinct. I’m still in awe of the place, I came down here when I was fifteen, ran away from home. Really romanticized it, you know? And it’s.. still beautiful in that creepy, old time-y way. Just sucks that I was dragged down here instead of coming of my own free will. And yep. Harvard. So it has, it’s quite the media circus up there right now.”
“Time, that’s what they all say. Maybe he just needs a rough smack in the head,” Brianna replied with a raised eyebrow, hitting the intercom on her desk. “Can you send in a stocked latte cart and two steak dinners? Thank you,” she said as she gestured for Micki to sit. “Well, whatever I can do to help just let me know, you know I love sitting for Artie.”
“Be nice, Bri. His entire life was just uprooted, a home he only just got used to was taken away from him. He has a right to be upset, we all do. But.. I don’t really see a way out of this one just yet. So, we might be stuck here for a while.” She smiled, taking a seat across from Brianna. “Thanks, Bri. I’ll let you know if we need a sitter anytime soon.”
“Oh. So. Charming. I’ve had the wonderful chance to speak to her. Just not in person. Can’t say I’m looking forward to that.” Taking a calming breath, she let the initial anger drain away. “Lets just hope things don’t go south here. I really don’t want to see who’s side she ends up on.”
“Yeah, I bet you’ll just have a grand old time talking to Queen Cersei’s evil twin sister.” Micki shrugged, trying to remain optimistic. Her household couldn’t take both Jake and her losing their shit over the move. “She’s too self-serving to let anything truly shitty happen to the town. But who the fuck knows at this point?”
Did you all drink the fucking punch, or something? Why the hell is everyone so calm about the fact that we were just forced to abandon our homes and our lives to move somewhere else that was more convenient for them? How is this better? What the fuck is wrong with you people?
“Babe, no one is happy about this. But we’re adjusting. It’s a shitty deal, but the rest of the world wants to see our heads on spikes for their damn amusement. Here.. as shitty as most of the council is.. our kind has power. It’s not better, it’s just.. different.”
“That’s so hilariously not funny. How’d she’ even manage that. No wait, let me guess, she used her magic to enthrall the rest of the council.” Dahlia scoffed, eyes narrowing. “Did she now.”
“She’s a smart woman, a conniving little bitch. But she’s smart. And she’s.. ancient. I’m sure she has some idea of how to run a place like this. Maybe not.. ethically.” She chuckled, nodding her head. “Yep, charming isn’t she?”
“I kind of thought it would,” she replied, sighing as she thought for a moment. “Maybe you could handle it though, if it’ll help the blackouts, you need something. Maybe they could start you off small and put it with something that will help the cravings.”
Micki shrugged, nodding once. “He’s stronger than his anger. He just needs time.” She shrugged once more, hand raising to massage the unbandaged side of her head. “Yeah. I’m seeing my new doctor later this week, so we’ll see how it goes. It’s just annoying. I didn’t have cravings for so long, then that bitch had to meddle."
Her smile widened, “Yeah? I didn’t know we had a crazy witch bitch on the council. This isn’t the same witch we had to worry about from before is it?”
Micki nodded, sigh ghosting over her lips. “We do. And, yes. It is the very same witch who seems to get her kicks from torturing myself, my fiance, and his pack.”
“New Orleans is stunningly breathtaking… I’ve lived many other places but nothing has ever beaten my home. You’re one of the recent influx of new people, I take it?”
“I’m gathering that. It’s a really lively place. You travel a lot then? And yeah, just got shipped down here from the university of freaks.”
