“It just feels so good, it’s such a great escape, you know. It really is. It’s such a great fantasy. It has nothing to do with the idea of movies, it’s just getting lost. Having an excuse to get that far out of your head is just a really good feeling.”
— River Phoenix (on Acting)

‘’In the 1990s, River taught a generation of young actors that there could be a different approach, one that placed greater value on artistic integrity and personal politics. Even today, when a young performer advocates for environmentalism or vegetarianism, it’s a ghostly echo of River’s life. His absence got filled by other performers - Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, his own brother Joaquin. Looking at them, we can see the ectoplasmic outline of what sort of man River might have become - and looking at thim, we can better understand the world he left behind.’’

“He was beautiful but it was never really about his face for me. He was a powerful, serene figure. He was very Buddha-like. He was very centered. I did think he was an angel. I thought he was larger than life. But, at the same time, he was one of us”
- Javier Perés

This is an excerpt from a book I’ve just read called ‘Hunting with Barracudas’ by River’s agent’s assistant, Chris Snyder.
This encounter is from a few days before River died. It came after various run ins that River and Chris had over River’s state. Chris speaks repeatedly about the guilt he feels about not speaking up to River and the opportunities in which he, River’s agent (Iris) and River’s mother had to intervene e.g. “Roger Ebert had seen River was in trouble and he’d only watched (The Thing Called Love) once. I had watched it seven times. Why hadn’t I recognised River’s call for help, when a total stranger had? It looked to me like an attempt at James Dean or Montgomery Clift sensitivity, when he was screaming for someone to stop him. But instead we’d ignored his cries for help and signed him up for more movies. I felt blood stained my hands too.”
It’s been reported that that was the way River was being handled but hearing it from the horses mouth in such detail is so so heartbreaking.
“I’m openly gay,” admits Dan Mathews, “And, he met a few of my boyfriends, and was completely comfortable around gays- not feeling threatened, not feeling awkward. And, for a seventeen or eighteen year old, he was pretty advanced. Whatever he may have lacked in interview skills, he more than made up for in human compassion, with regards to anything, animals, the environment, and not judging people. This is a quality I think a lot of people could learn from. [He was] a person who reacted more by instinct rather than by formal education. He never, ever had a problem with… you know, you could have somebody walk in [in] a business suit, somebody else walk in with a pink Mohawk; anybody could be themselves around River. He seemed to be wise beyond his years with that” - In Search of River Phoenix (2004)
