Robi and I went to the MET round peak time, on a Saturday afternoon, escaping the cold but regrettably leaving the sunshine outdoors. As the so-called golden hour passed and faded into another sunset, the shimmer of the city was a world away from the marble and majesty of centuries and histories passed inside the museum walls. In the frenzy of humanity, I tried to play around with different viewpoints--and we had a blast doing it. With eyes of busts and statues staring back at us, what is the experience like when we see it through reflections, lenses and mobile phones? Maybe no different; but like every time I go, there’s always something--and someone--else to see.

As Amelie approaches the photo booth, Nino is searching under it. This shot carries an interesting perspective created by placing the camera at shoe level. By using this perspective, the place where wall and floor meets centers the frame placing Amelie’s feet, enlarged by the perspective, below center and Nino, shrunken by the perspective, above center.

Amelie rides a spooky ride, and begins to fall in love with Nino. The vertical split in this shot between Amelie and Nino is a very powerful juxtaposition, Amelie’s face still carries a semblance of warmth, even though her surroundings are lit with a cool yellow. The use of Nino as a skeleton embodies Amelie’s fears of intimacy and this scene expresses that through eerie yellow lighting and the use of heavy fog to create an element of mystery.

THE IDLER WHEEL - The artwork on this cover was made by Fiona Apple, including the drawing, the handwriting and the multimedia. It is a complex, bold and personal statement. I also love the use of bright complimentary colors and accents.

VESPERTINE - I love the beautiful photo, the lacing of artwork over the photo and the use of the controversial swan dress - its a bit a of a joke, but also a quiet stance against public criticism. The inspiration behind the album was ‘quiet.’ This cover represents a quiet moment cast out into the open, and even then, maintaining that quiet, the sense of solitude, intimacy and fortitude.

BUT YOU CAINT USE MY PHONE - I love the use of animation, the metaphorical use of speakers all over Badu’s body, the text - including the reviews, the commentary, the pricing - and the gradated spectrum of colors. The cover contains a secret code that if you crack it, you will be able to actually call Badu directly. The cover is playful, whip smart and invites engagement. It’s also a throwback to pop art from the 70s, and its a critique of modern phone culture. It’s layered, and though it has many layers, the image is strong enough that it is not swallowed up by all the activity, instead, in turn, the image holds up the text heavy cover. It’s loud and indefatigable, as any album with a political viewpoint would dare to be.

One of my favorite techniques used in Waiting for Sugarman is the use of evidentiary artifacts. It makes the viewer feel that they are going along on the search to find Rodriguez, it gives the film drive. Another great technique is the use of scenes of Rodriguez walking throughout Detroit, it adds to the sense of Rodriguez as an everyday man doing mundane things and it highlights a central aspect of his humble personality.
