When I first found Sherlock my life was a mess to put it mildly. I was in an abusive relationship, 24/7 plagued by then untreated severe back-pain, I had walked out on my family and I was dealing with what I now know to be severe PTSD and depression on my own. 

I decided to watch Sherlock by S3 (had tried to ignore it before for fear of becoming addicted as it just looked that! good) and it changed everything. It took my mind off of the pain, and it filled my head with something completely different. When I had panic attacks I re-called pieces of diaglouge or scenes from the show and it helped me a lot. I am pretty sure the show also had a bit to do with me recently seeking mental help too.  The show rekindled my love of writing as well. And writing helped me look at the situation with the man I was with, and how to get away from him (and the fact that I needed to in the first place).  Due to my PTSD I am often tormented by suicidal thoughts and it’s hard work to convince my mind that it has to stay alive and fight; basically it’s hard to find things to ‘stick around for’ and I even forget my best friend and boyfriend in the process. It sounds terrible… but the one thing my mind can’t counter is “Stay alive so you can watch more Sherlock”. It works in a crisis… but I do try to focus on staying around for my friend and boyfriend too.  I’ve made some lovely friends because of the show too. Mostly online and it means a lot. I used to be a very lonely person… the show even made me closer with my best (real life) friend. I got her into the show and we spend a lot of time watching the episodes together and discussing our theories.  For a lot of reasons I wished the show had been around when I was a teenager. One reason being that I’m sure it would have helped me express my level of intelligence rather than suppress it. I would hide it in school for fear of giving my bullies another card on their hands… it was simply not cool to be smart then. So I gave wrong answers on purpose and dumbed myself down.  Today I let my ‘nerd flag’ fly free; and I personally see Sherlock as an idol in that regard. To allow yourself to be you and to not be influenced by other people’s views of you. Obviously I am aware that he’s not the cleanest icon you can idolize *cough*… but considering where I come from… well. 

Thank you. I know this was a messed up post… but thank you. I owe you so much.
