Director's Commentary: PROLOGUE

Director's Commentary is a Tumblr-exclusive bonus where — at the end of every chapter — we yap about the production process and point out little details that are in the most recent pages. This first one will be focused on the prologue!

Huge inspiration for the vibe of the prologue is “song for my lost ghost friends” by spellcasting; do with that what you will
I actually forgot that there was going to be a prologue for a while LMAO; around the end of production for Chapter 1 I took a look back on some old art and remembered the original concept of this part I was making as a Gacha Life animatic many years ago. Really wish I had kept the screenshots for that but that was almost a decade ago so 💔
I had visualised this part to be an animation that was very dream-like and illogical, but I wanted to keep the webcomic format of this series (+ I’m not that confident yet in my animation skills to perfectly encapsulate what I’m imagining). You can kinda see the animation vision i had in my head, especially in the last couple pages
The first comic draft had a very experimental format where both POVs of the owl lady and the two boys were on the same page, separated by a border made of lily of the valleys. This was later scrapped because I couldn’t figure out how to make it work without it being overloaded with information.
This background character is a toned-down version of my character Cynth. The flats colorer @e1i-neverrests and I were joking about who the real main character is because of how purple she is compared to every other character
This background character’s hair is inspired by my own hair irl!!

The little doodles beside the arrows that the owl lady follows are drawing of herself made by the two boys
The montage of young Ignautius and young Kendrian in the forest references these 2 illustrations I made a long time ago
When Kendrian trips into the river, Ignautius initially didn’t notice because he wasn’t able to hear the loud splash. I had planned to make that more visible but didn’t want to add more panels onto an already crowded page.
In this dream sequence, the two boys (Kendrian and Ignautius) are both 11 years old whereas in his present version (last two pages) he is 16. Later on in the story there will be a more in-depth conversation on what’s going on here
Kendrian and Ignautius’s colour palettes share a lot of colours together! For example, the colour for Kendrian’s mouth colour is the same as Ignautius’ hair poff
Neverrest was having so much trouble with colouring the owl lady’s hair 💔 the back view was especially difficult (like omg who designed you,,)
There are soo many little details on the characters that constantly get forgotten about during the inking stage. Shoes, bandages, scars, hair parts, the list goes on when you do most of your work at 2am
Alongside it being the series release date, it is also Kendrian’s birthday!! (February 13th) Happy birthday Kendrian ❤️
