my spirit animal main 4 designs!
Conor and Abeke are the most similar to the official cover art designs but I wanted to do my own thing with Rollan and Meilin's clothes
After nearly ten years, Conor and Abeke's relationship has solidified into a fully platonic, familial one to me. Feeling surprisingly alright with this development.
We've come a long, long way.
Coneke used to be second only to Shaneke in my heart. But as time passed, and I revisited Spirit Animals with a fresh, adult perspective, my deep-rooted opinion changed. In an incredible turn of events, I can no longer envision Conor and Abeke as romantic. Not even a little bit.
But that's okay! There is something even better: Friendship and found family that transcends romance. That's how I view them.
I find it interesting how they both think of each other as siblings. No other relationship between the main characters is described that way -- they all think of each other as family, yes, but Abeke specifically calls Conor a brother, and he calls her a sister. In fact, this is one of only a few instances where non-related characters are shown to think this way about each other. It's significant.
Though they have plenty of tender moments throughout the series, I find myself only seeing those interactions in a platonic light (especially with the above in mind). The fact that they were still firmly friends by the time the series ended -- and the fact that I'm now okay with that -- really drove it home for me. I used to be disappointed by the fact that they never seemed to go anywhere. Now it makes me happy to see the platonic nature of their bond confirmed.
They certainly have a special relationship and it will forever be near and dear to my heart, but there's no romance there for me. They're just friends. Best friends!
Friends who can tell each other anything.
Friends who share a special kind of understanding.
Friends who think of each other as a sibling they never had.
I like it that way.
If little me knew I would someday denounce Coneke, she would be appalled. And I'm sorry, little me. But I think this is how they were meant to be interpreted all along.

Rereading Hunted
I'm doing my first reread of Spirit Animals in years, in preparation for starting my rewrite and the final fourth arc, and to my delight I'm discovering a lot of things that went over my head as a younger reader. I finished Hunted today, and wanted to talk about some of the more interesting things I noticed -- character details, plot holes and creepy implications. I wasn't expecting to enjoy this book so much, but I've found it tickled my brain just the right way.
So, here are some highlights from my reread -- stuff even I didn't pick up on before.
Please mind the tags as there is a brief mention of rape near the bottom of this post.
Conor looks to be strawberry-blonde on this cover, not golden-blonde as he's described in text. I feel like it suits him.
The war has actually been going on for a while, probably since well before Wild Born. Finn was fighting Conquerors when his brothers were massacred, and it's unlikely that event was recent enough to have taken place during Wild Born. There is also a moment in the first book when General Teng speculates that the Conquerors who are laying siege to Jano Rion entered the city over a period of years in order to avoid suspicion. It would be interesting if the authors tied this in more efficiently, and our protagonists had been living in an active war when they summoned the Four Fallen. This opens up a plot hole, though: the Conquerors operate under Shane, and because Shane is 13 when he mobilizes his people for war in The Book of Shane, the events of the main series must have started quite soon after this. Abeke mentions he's only a little older than she is in Wild Born; since Shane is already 13, he couldn't have been waging war for a few years before this.
The only background I could find for Kunaya's name is that it is of Zimbabwe origin and means "rain". Notice the connection? Abeke is a Rain Dancer.
Rollan mentions that his father is dead, in a way that suggests he knew him. This seems to have been retconned in Fire and Ice, as his father plays no part in Aidana's retelling of their past as a family. Indeed, he is never brought up again after this instance in Hunted.
The Earl of Trunswick was burning bodies. Our protagonists notice something off about the bonfire burning outside Trunswick, with Abeke and Meilin specifically noting its unpleasant smell. And most tellingly, when Conor and Rollan are captured, the Earl tells his soldiers to "burn the body with the rest" if Conor does not put Briggan into passive state. Who exactly the Earl was burning is not entirely clear, but a possible clue comes from a later chapter where he threatens Finn after the breakout from the Howling House. "Don't worry, Finn Cooley! We'll burn that troubled bond out of you yet!" he says. I'm inclined to believe the Earl was burning the bodies of spirit animals with the bonding sickness -- in a twisted attempt to cure their human companions, or merely to torture them further. It's possible he was burning human corpses too; Isilla the Greencloak is mentioned to have been killed, and I get the sense he wouldn't have treated her body with respect. In any case, this is a crazy thing to heavily imply and then never fully explain.
Tahlia is noticeably older than the other three kids. She even takes offense to being referred to as a child by Zerif. (In my rewrite, with the other three being around 13, I think I would place her at 18.)
Tahlia's entire existence doesn't make much sense -- she's supposed to be bonded to the Stetriolan legend of the water-holding frog, but this legend isn't even mentioned in the third arc when our protagonists go scouting for these same legends' bond tokens. Instead, it is replaced by Zhong's water dragon. Additionally, why would Stetriol even need a hero to inspire them? They already have Shane. They're the birthplace of the Conquerors -- what more inspiration do they need? It would make more sense if Tahlia was Zhongese and bonded to a water dragon, like Song's Seaspray. After all, if any nation needed someone to sway them to the Conquerors' side, it would be the fallen Zhong.
Ana, the Amayan girl with the Gila monster, was chosen to be a part of the False Four for her "exceeding connections". This makes me wonder if she was intended to be related or otherwise close to the Prime Minister of Amaya. It's never revealed what Zerif meant by this and Ana presumably dies in Fire and Ice.
The False Four in general are a really interesting (and promising) concept and I wish more was done with them. I wanted to see them rallying the four nations to the Conquerors' side and creating more of a threat to the Greencloaks! I wanted to see each of them directly paralleling the True Four! Instead, they all ended up incarcerated, insane or dead by the fourth book. Ah well. That's what my rewrite is for.
The absence of Lady MacDonnell is noted, but never explained. Interestingly, Rollan notices this in the same breath as he does Lord MacDonnell's children being so rigidly obedient. Considering Lord MacDonnell's character, I'm willing to bet he had his wife executed or otherwise removed for some transgression she made. After all, one of the Three Undeniable Truths is "death".
Lord MacDonnell is a really terrible guy. Despite aiding our protagonists in this book and The Evertree, he is a nasty person who keeps his own people in a permanent state of fear. This book is full of despicable characters, for sure.
What were Devin and Karmo intending to do with Abeke? And why her? Because of her connection to the Conquerors, I'm guessing. But it's never really explained. They tell her they're taking her back to Nilo, but there's no way they would just kindly take her home and let her go. Maybe the Conquerors planned to give her the Bile and then use her in some scheme. I wish this book wasn't so vague (but I also don't because it gives me more freedom as a writer).
Devin calls Abeke "vermin" in the final battle. Interestingly, Karmo doesn't seem to approve of this comment. In fact, Karmo is a lot more sympathetic than I remembered.
This is the only first arc book that Shane doesn't appear in, and for no apparent reason. I think it would have been a good choice to include him and plan to in my rewrite.
Finn has PTSD. Poor guy. I kind of like that he didn't return to Greenhaven at the end and instead stayed in Glengavin -- after all, it was the Greencloaks and their talk of destiny that led to Finn's brothers being killed, Donn retreating and Finn being so deeply scarred.
The Earl seems to threaten Conor's mother with rape in the foreboding letter he sends. I've seen several people discuss this. He tells Conor his family will starve if he doesn't hand over the Iron Boar, "and the fate of your mother will be far crueller". It's a chilling implication, and certainly a choice to include in a children's book.
Overall, Hunted is dark. For that reason, it's become one of my favourite books in the series. Beautiful cover, great writing, cool new guy introduced, failure for our protagonists and an epic cliffhanger. This one is a gem.
I remember the first time I read Hunted I was like ok, definitely not for this age group but it's not bad. I came back and read it again and realized how dark it truly was 😃
Thanks for pointing these things out 💕
Also strawberry-blonde Conor supremacy 🙌🏿🙌🏿
to the six people in the spirit animals fandom, i need it to be known that tasha is literally the reilin child.
do you think there is a cure for the redcloaks?
yes
no
YES PULLED THROUGH BY A HAIR! thank you everybody!
i've thought about this question for a while and now believe that a cure is possible. freeing the redcloaks from their affliction is indeed a path i may take in my writing. however, this is a very weighty decision -- there is a lot to consider here.
if anyone is interested to know, here is my half-formed idea for how the redcloaks would be able to reverse their curse.
the curse begins because the bile bonds were broken with the spirit animals in passive state, unable to be summoned out. this means, in order to release the trapped animal from the human's body, the bonds would have to be restored. how? nectar wouldn't work as none of the redcloaks were truly marked to begin with. the only way to do this is through the bile.
gerathon's talisman creates the bile, as we know, but the bile was rendered useless after her death. however. the staff of cycles, into which gerathon's talisman and all the others were fused, appears to still be active. the last time we hear of it in the books, it had lost its power immediately after the great beasts sacrificed themselves to the evertree, but soon began to glow again and gave life to the new evertree. the combined talismans are what gave the staff its power, so if the staff is still active, the talismans are too, in a new way.
the full scope of the staff of cycles' power is never fully explained, and the reason this whole idea isn't set in stone is because i still need to figure that out. but in order for this to help the redcloaks, let's say that among other things, the staff of cycles has the combined power of each talisman within it, on a much larger scale than the individual talisman. the talismans themselves are finite and can only be used by a marked person. the staff is limitless.
and so, drawing on the power of the jade serpent, the staff of cycles could hypothetically be used to "restart" the bile bonds of the redcloaks, allowing them to release their dormant spirit animals. this would halt the merging of their bodies and allow both human and animal to walk away free. the bile bond would still be in effect then, giving the human (or animal) control over their companion. the solution for this would be to destroy the staff after the redcloaks release their animals (also to prevent someone from using the staff for evil). thus, the bile bonds are broken and the animals are free.
the redcloaks would have the choice to be cured or remain in their current bodies, to eventually lose themselves to the transformation. some might choose not to be healed, feeling unable to return to their past selves. the rest return to their former bodies, forfeiting their animal-given abilities for good but retaining their humanity.
i'm not sure of the staff's current whereabouts -- perhaps the four took it back with them to greenhaven for safekeeping, or perhaps they left it there by the tree, unaware that it was regaining its power -- but the truth is that it could very much be wielded once again.

Headcanon #16
I'm making a comeback again ppl have faith in me 🙏🏿 I still needa work on the Conor sickfic but for now take this headcanon as my apology 😔
-Meilin is like the know-it-all teacher. (not in a bad way just wait ✋🏿) So Conor can't read or write, right? 😏 It's kinda like that. (I reserve the teaching Conor for Abeke thanks) ANYWHO, she's like that. Someone doesn't get how the lesson works? She's got the lesson notes and everything. You wanna learn a new move for combat? She's there and ready to go through it with you until you get it. (Unless your name is Rollan) Then its game over for you <3
y'all are gonna love the catified spirit animals au i got cooking
Headcanon 15
I promise I'm working on that Conor sickfic 🙏🏿 I'm just a really slow writer 😭 Gimme this week maybe?? Yea 😃 I'm like a quarter done right now 😭
On to the headcanon!
Rollan is that awkward comforter. We already see this in the books but it's so unhinged it's hilarious. Like the most randomest things. He'll try so hard to cheer up one of the Four Fallen and it either ends up with one of them smacking him across the head or dying-laughing at his antics.
(for you reilin shippers out there 🫵🏿)
-if he tries hard for Abeke and Conor he frickin doubles it for Meilin
-she finds it so stupid and adorable of him and she won't say so but the sliver of a smile will peek out
ok your welcome bye friends <33
Headcanon #14
Conor loves to go on walks. Sometimes he'll go with Briggan, or with one of the Four fallen kids, or by himself. He doesn't even want to talk he just wants some quiet company you know? Which is why Rollan is never his first option. When he starts getting his nightmares he takes these walks more often.

(bc I love coneke <3)
Abeke is his primary walk friend after the Wyrm. She's so concerned for his well being it's adorable. Even if he doesn't want to go on a walk she'll just convince him to go outside with her. She can look him in the eyes and immediately tell if he's ok or if he had a nightmare.
Ok bye bye <3

stayed up late last night developing personalities and appearances for shane and abeke's future daughters... ohh i hope you guys love them as much as i do
hello!!!!!! good to see the sa fandom is making a small comeback 🩷 do you have any headcanons on shane the best character ?
Hi friend!!! In fact, I do have headcanons about shane the best character 🫣 The first part is headcanons along the line (they follow the story line) the next bit is more headcanony? yeah <3
Shane ♔
this bit is like before his mother dies
-As a kid he's a picky eater (that's the first thing off the top of my head sorry 😭) Like the chef is running back and forth cause shane said he didn't want whatever it was they made. Later on he just gives up and has a small list of the limited foods baby Shane will eat
-He loved adventure; playing pirate, pretending to be a dragon, and climbing into high places were some of his favourites. Before they lose a good chunk of the staff, he'd rope some of them into his games and get them to build different props for his imaginary adventures.
-Like any younger brother would, he messes with Drina a lot. And like any younger sibling would, the second that Drina retaliates he's calling for his mother.
-whenever he and Drina fight, their mom would lock them up together inside their playhouse (the green and pink one from The Book of Shane: Venom) until they made up (not rlly but shh 🤫)
-A bit of a sad one, but when their mom first gets sick, Drina starts getting back at Shane because she knows he can't get any help 😔
Moving on-
-By the time Drina is stuck with the bonding sickness, almost all that happiness is gone
-when's she's stuck in bed he comes and tells her all these whimsical stories or he talks to her about all the places they'll visit when she gets better
-he also has to convince himself-he just really wants to get out the castle
-we already know he thought about running away and he knows it's very serious but there's a small part of him that thinks "it's just another adventure right?" "all my adventures have been inside the castle, this is the same thing except it's real." He's trying to help himself out ok? 😭
-but then Zerif shows up and shows him a different hell
-you see, if Zerif hadn't pulled up with his cure all potion maybe he would've run away with Drina. Maybe she could be helped even a little bit. Maybe he would've lived some cottage core aesthetic life idk 🤷🏾♀️
-All I know is our friend over here wouldn't have gone on a world wide rampage 🙃
-I said this in a previous post, but Shane is absolutely in shock at all the things he gets to see as a Conqueror.
-so before the Conqueror's officially start rampaging, he goes off and tries all these things and eats different foods
-In the towns that they stayed a really long time in, he visits some specific stalls over and over again, spends all his money there and the owners just instantly know him and what he wants
-later on after the Conquerors ravaged said towns he feels really really bad about it.
-and then he meets Abeke
-once they're better acquainted he brings her on his market adventures too and they have so much fun
-just two friends hanging out
-side note: Abeke shows him all the good market stalls and the best food ones while they're in Nilo
-and he's just so happy he's got his first friend in a long time and everythings going so well for him right?
-well not for long 😏
and that's where I leave you for now :D I'll do a part two to shane's headcanons along the line but here for now have some proper headcanony headcanons
♔
-Shane loves reading (you know how I said he likes adventure? He got it from those fantasy books)
-whenever he had a meal that had any speck, shape or form of a food he didn't like? The meal? gone. Out in the trash. Later on when he sees war ravaged places he instead just picks out the part he doesn't like and gives it to someone
-After Gerathon is finished Shane kinda grows to like Grahv. He talks to him and Grahv will just lie down, eyes shut and huff. In a better life if Grahv was summoned naturally Shane would brush his plates and scales to help him clean up
-You know how he escaped on Halawir? It was a revelation for him
-he loved the rush of air
-and he's so upset after cause he can't get the same feeling anymore
-After living in such a hot country that's basically the equivalent of Australia, he's travelling anywhere cold. His favourite place was Arctica until it blew up 😃
-Ok that's all friend! Hope you like them <3
Headcanon #13
WE'RE BACK IN THE HEADCANONS GAME 💪🏿
I feel like the four fallen kids-during any trip or mission-must take a trip to the market. It's like going to the mall with friends you know? They have their allowance and they just go. The girls will team up and try to find some new weapon for Meilin or find new colours or beads to weave into Abeke's hair. Conor and Rollan are somewhere deeper in the stalls looking for something really stupid that Rollan saw. Of course, Rollan forgot his allowance so Conor has to share some of his to get whatever he wanted. Then they all meet back up at lunch time and decide on what they're gonna eat. Sometimes they'll all get different meals so they can try each other's or they just get the same thing. Then they spend like a couple more minutes walking around as a group before heading back to camp.
ok bye bye <3
to-dos
-this is basically me putting some thoughts down somewhere so I can actually start being productive 😃
-I need to write that Conor sickfic (I promise I will)
-i also kinda felt like writing ship headcanons so that too
Ok that's it for now. I'll edit this if I have more (or you guys give me some ideas 😃)
My Conbeke headcanons cause why not
Everyone can see it but them + she fell first, he fell harder trope
Abeke sleeps in Conor's t-shirts, even before they started dating
Conor acts all annoyed saying that soon, he won't have what to wear, but he actually thinks she looks really cute in those
After the Wyrm, the only times Conor wouldn't have nightmares was when Abeke slept next to him
Abeke doesn't like having her hair untied, but when she does, it's always because Conor once told her that she looked good with her hair down
Conor is the one to cook in their relationship. Abeke is terrible at it
Everyone thinks that Meilin or Rollan is the biggest Conbeke shipper, but in reallity it's Worthy
Every time Conor feels bad or insecure or smt else about what he did because of Wyrm Abeke kisses his forhead or arm, where Wyrm started the infection
Before the two started dating, on girl's nights with Meilin, Maya, Lishay and sometimes Kalani or Tasha, the rest of the girls tried to make Abeke to admit she liked Conor, and she always refused to admit it, even though it was so obvious
they spent a lot of time in library, Abeke teaching Conor how to read, cause she's a bookworn herself
Headcanon #12
I remebered today that there were other characters in the SA series (oopsie poopsies 🤷🏾♀️)
-MY FRIEND SHANE. Let's discuss him shall we? (At another time but take a small headcanon abt him for now while I write that essay)
-basically, Shane's an adventurous kid. So when he first starts travelling as a Conqueror, he's thinking "what the flip wow." And he tries all these foods (steals rlly but shh) and new things and he's just really really happy.
(small shippy bit for @bayofwolves)
-So this is after Abeke's gone to the Greencloaks side, but whenever Shane sees something new or amazing, he thinks "I should show this to Abeke." or "Abeke would've loved this."
-and just because I'm feeling extra today 😉, when they meet up again in The Place of Desolation after defeating the Wyrm (Shane lives for the purposes of this headcanon) he's collected all sorts of items to show her and talk to her about; anything he couldn't show her, he describes to her and they're just sitting in their own quiet little bubble 😭
ok enjoy <3
