『〜ば、～のに』 would have... if (only)...

意味 - Meaning

This construction is used informally and expresses regret over something that one would/could do if conditions were different. Since the 〜ば form or 条件形 conditional form is used here, I like to think of it using these constructions:

if Ⓐ, … would/should (have) Ⓑ

if only Ⓐ, then Ⓑ

To express that “it would be / have better if Ⓐ” or “should (have) Ⓐ”, use 〜ばいいのに・〜ばよかったのに

接続 - Formation

Verbs and い-adjectives take their respective 〜ば form (条件形 conditional form):

Verb (ばform)、～のに

い-adjectiveい + ければ、～のに

However, な-adjectives and nouns do not use 〜ば, but rather なら:

な-adjective+なら、～のに

Noun+なら、～のに

例文 - Example sentences

車で行けば、間に合ったのに。 If I came by car, I would have been on time.

もうちょっと早く連絡してくれれば、迎えに行ったのに。 If you had contacted me a little earlier, I would have gone to pick you up.

猫アレルギーさえなければ、家で猫が飼えるのに。 If only I didn’t have a cat allergy, I could have a cat at my house. (NOTE: 〜さえ〜ば expresses “as long as”, but because of the regretful 〜のに it carries the connotation of “if only”)

昨日、もっと早く寝れば、朝起きられたのに。 If I’d gone to bed earlier last night, I would have been able to get up in the morning.

文法：～ようになる

ように combines with the verb なる (become) when you want to describe a change in your behavior, when you start to do something you haven’t done before. You can also use it with the potential form to describe a change in your ability, when you are able to do something you couldn’t.

Short + ようになる Change in habit or action; have come to do ~ Potential short + ようになる Change in ability or possibility; have come to be able to do ~

近頃食べながら形態電話を使うようになる。 Nowadays, people have come to use their cell phones while eating.

十年間後、日本の新聞を読めるようになりました。 After ten years, I am able to read a Japanese newspaper (when I couldn’t before).

憂き目に遭ってからゴーヤーを食べられるようになるって。 They say after experiencing hardship, you will be able to eat bitter melon.

関西弁 — kansai dialect

when learning japanese as a foreign language, most people will learn standard japanese 標準語 (ひょうじゅんご), as it’s the type of japanese taught in a classroom setting or in your textbooks.

however there are a lot of dialects in japan, one of the most famous one being 関西弁 (かんさいべん) the kansai dialect! kansai dialect is said to sound louder, harsher and more melodic.

関西弁 (かんさいべん) summarizes all dialect spoken in the 関西 (かんさい) region ( ~弁 (べん) is used to describe a dialect). kansai includes cities like osaka, kyoto or nara. the most famous variation of kansai dialect would probably be 大阪弁 (おおさかべん) osaka dialect.

in kansai dialect the う as in です or ます is pronounced.

the kansai dialect is associated with a fun, outgoing personality. in anime characters might speak kansai dialect even if they aren’t from kansai. (also in dubbing of foreign animation, some characters might speak kasai ben to underline their character!)

remember that most people (especially younger generations) don’t really speak thick kansai dialect all the time! it’s mostly a mix of standard japanese and dialect. when speaking formally people rarely use kansai dialect but switch to 丁寧語 (ていねいご) polite language of the standard speech.

here’s a video of attack on titan scenes dubbed in kansai dialect compared with standard japanese! even if you can’t understand everything maybe you can still notice the different melody and some characteristics of kansai dialect like へん ending on verbs, and the copula や (more in the read more)!! i thought it was super interesting and maybe you could also watch it if you don’t like anime.

also worth adding that in kansai, calling someone あほ is considered to be really light-hearted and fun (parents often say it to their children when they do something silly or misbehave), but ばか is really strong and considered to be quite rude and is hardly used. you’ll almost 100% hear people use あほ here!

わからん and 知らん can also be considered a bit uncaring, so be careful how you use them and in what context! it’s almost like saying “i don’t know and i don’t care” all in one syllable, especially depending on tone. わからへん is safe, though. everyone uses that, ha.

if you want to hear kansaiben, i recommend watching any kansai variety shows you can find! my favorite is 関ジャニ∞クロニクル, but there are tons of them.

p.s. everyone in kansai talks about 5 times as fast as standard japanese speakers and their intonation is different on almost everything (even our train announcements are faster than tokyo’s!!!! lmao)

I received this beautiful jubako box from my mother for Christmas! She found it at an antique show she went to this summer. Isn’t it gorgeous? Jubako are stacking bento boxes used for osechi.

Osechi is a traditional New Years dish (meal?) in Japan. It’s a collection of foods prepared before New Years to be eaten during the holiday. Originally, the boxes were put together so that the women of the house wouldn’t have to cook during the first three days of the New Year. In the Heian period, cooking was forbidden during the first three days of the New Year. The only exception to this rule was making ozoni, a New Year’s soup with mochi. That made osechi a necessity during the time. These days osechi is simply a good luck tradition. In December, a a large selection of osechi cookbooks begin to appear in stores for people planning to make their own. You can also buy pre-made osechi from restaurants and specialty shops or purchase pre-made osechi dishes to create a personalized flare without the cooking.

TL;DR: Tattoos are associated with organized crime in Japan.

Longer explanation: While tattoos in Japan may have originally been considered to be a status symbol and have religious importance (we have accounts from Chinese diplomats during the Yayoi period, 300BC-300AD), during the Kofun period (300-540AD), they became a tool used to mark criminals, coming to a head in 1720 where full-arm tattoos were used exclusively for ‘minor’ offenses instead of cutting off noses and/or ears.

All of this led to tattoos getting hugely stigmatized. Until fairly recently, the only people you could find who did have tattoos were generally part of the yakuza (Japanese mafia), who often chose hugely elaborate tattoos based off of traditional Japanese art. Here’s a few of them:

Tattoos in Japan are still so controversial that in 2012, the then-mayor of Osaka, Toru Hashimoto, launched a campaign to get companies to get rid of their employees who had visible tattoos that was very well-received, with many companies siding with him.

Many swimming pools and onsen still ban tattooed people for all of this. During the 2019 rugby championship in Japan, the government effectively begged the foreign players and supporters to please cover up in public because people will react badly, and with the 2020 Olympics in Japan, apparently the government has tried to launch an awareness campaign amongst the public that tattoos on foreigners aren’t considered a sign of criminal conduct in their home countries, because the press backlash would be a nightmare.

There’s a little liquor store up the road that’s run by a tiny old lady and sometimes her daughter, and they sell Very Hot & Spicy Chili Beer. I love a spicy drink, and they are super duper nice. One Friday, my husband and I stopped by on the way home, and they asked if we wanted to see their basement(??). And, because I have always wanted to be part of a live-action re-enactment of The Cask of Amontillado, obviously we said yes.

The owner told us that we were welcome to have a look, but we couldn’t stay, not tonight. Maybe another time. We were free to have a look, though. Okay, that’s fine! I did not come here tonight expecting to see your basement, much less stay in it; I’m just saying yes to life. I will have a look at whatever it is you want me to see, and then get out of your hair.

She and her daughter took us behind the counter and, mostly hidden behind a towering shelf, there was a door leading to a dark and very old staircase, leading to a wine cellar! In the center, was an enormous, ancient wooden table, seated around which were twelve or thirteen Japanese men, all around retirement age. One of them, seeming quite drunk, nodded familiarly as if he’d been expecting us and gestured for us to sit down. We didn’t; we were only there to look. But there was cake! And lots of liquor.

It was a 勉強会 benkyoukai, they explained: a study meeting. They get together semi-regularly to study things like “topics” and “subjects,” to keep their minds sharp and enjoy one another’s company. Tonight was more of a birthday party, though. They were sad we couldn’t stay and party with them—maybe next time! They’d recently organized a hike, if we were interested in that kind of thing. They gave us a copy of the liquor store’s newsletter, detailing all the upcoming neighborhood events and discounts on dried fish snacks and local specialties from around the country, and bid us farewell. We walked carefully up the dark stairs, thanking the shop owners for their hospitality, and bought a few beers. They may have given us some dried squid for the walk home. I love that little store; I’m going to miss them when we move.
