gotta catch ‘em all (ben/meg)

Ben was hustling across the street to get inside. It was fucking freezing. And there was some crazy person walking around in circles in the alleyway next to the station.

It wasn’t until he got closer that he realized that that crazy person was Meg Jacobs.

Ben wasn’t naturally a protective person. He saw people doing stupid things all the time and he never stopped them (hell, he was usually the one who was egging them on), but the thing about Meg was that she didn’t realize she was being stupid. And it felt like a very real chance that she would get straight up murdered in that alley. Either that or freeze to death. At the very least, she would probably end up accidentally buying a bag of heroine. 

“Catching all the pokemans?” Ben asked, casually, approaching her.

“You know, I once saw a guy getting the crap kicked out of him in this alley. Which I’m realizing is super comforting. That image is gonna do wonders for you literally everytime you go to work from now on. So yeah, you’re welcome.” 

He leaned up against the wall. “Anyway, I’m gonna stand here until you catch that thing and make sure you don’t, know know, die. Because you can’t die. You’re the only other cool person who works here besides me.”

“Come on,” she mumbled gazing into her screen at charmander: charmander who had so long eluded her. He wouldn’t get away this time, she vowed.  The ball was out! Her heart pounded, Meg held her breath…Someone was behind her!  With a cry of alarm, Meg whirled around, ready to hurl her phone at the attacker…and realized it was only Ben.  “Oh my God,” she breathed, placing a hand over her heart.  “Ben, hi, I thought that was how I died there for a moment,” she teased. She was joking, of course…the smile died on her face when she realized he was really talking about danger.  

“What!” she exclaimed.  “Oh my God, is he ok?” she whispered earnestly, gasping as something else occurred to her.  “The attacker…was…was it Leo?” She gasped again as another thought came to her.  "Did you interfere?  Is that how you got the...?" Meg gestured towards her eye, recalling his black eye.  After all, Zach had told her it was Leo's doing.  “Sorry,” she said, quickly.  “That was a rude thing to ask.  Zach...he told me Leo was responsible, so I wondered...I shouldn’t have asked.”

In truth, before now, Meg had assumed he'd gotten it in the midst of some sort of lover's quarrel. After all, she'd heard that Zach and Leo were married, but then later she'd heard that Ben and Zach were secretly dating (which struck her as terribly dangerous, given Leo's...temper). These were all rumors - and she'd not, for example, seen rings on Zach or Leo - and Meg had certainly seen Ben flirt with many of the ladies she knew (herself included), firsthand, but flirting didn’t mean anything, either.  Maybe he was bi...maybe he wasn’t.  In truth, Meg really didn't quite know what to make of the whole situation altogether.  She tried simply to keep an open mind and make no assumptions when it came to those three.  The only things she felt even remotely sure of, was that Leo was an abusive villain, and that Zach was gay.

“Yeah,” she responded, halfway between a laugh and a frown, brows crinkled deeply.  “That is definitely something I want to contemplate in the dark on my way home every night,” she laughed - she was always quick to laugh - but she shook her head.  “Don’t worry.  I’ll be ok.  I mean, nothing bad’s happened so far, right?”  To her, nothing bad had happened.  Ben had literally just told her that something bad had happened, but Meg never really thought she was in danger until too late, somehow.  “It’ll be fine.  I’m just walking home for the next week till I get my car back from the shop.”  She’d lost it driving into a fire hydrant, playing pokemon go while driving.  The real miracle was that this hadn’t happened sooner...or that nothing worse had happened.  “I should warn Lore, though,” she mused.  “Wait,” she added with a growing smile.  “Did you just say ‘pokemans?’”

She shook her head.  “You and me?  The cool people around here?” she grinned, shaking her head.  “I’m pretty sure you didn’t ask Aaron about that,” she teased.  It was a joke around the station because it was kind of true...Aaron thought Aaron was the coolest person there.

Meg laughed.  “At least that would give the reporters something interesting to talk about: ‘Local news intern slaughtered in alley playing pokemon go.’  Or maybe something shorter...you know: brevity, wit...all that,” she chuckled, eyes flicking back to her phone as he mentioned what she’d been doing.  

“Aw,” she muttered, and turned the screen towards Ben.  “He’s gone!  Where’d he go?” she glanced around the alley, as though she would spot a cartoon dragon somewhere in the alley with her own eyes.  “It was charmander!” she exclaimed.  Holding out her phone she turned it about, but didn’t spot him.  

Glancing around again, she yelped.  “Is that a raccoon?” she cried, shining the light of her phone at something large darting out of the trash.  “Maybe next time,” she told charmander, wistfully.  Meg turned a pouty frown towards Ben, before bursting into a laugh.  “Ok, I’ve had enough of this alley,” she said, taking his hand and leading him away.  “We’re getting out of here.”
