ikävä

In finnish, to missing someone is not a verb.

“ikävä” is usually an adjective, a word for the unpleasant, tedious, nasty, unfortunate, kind of a catch-all for “it would be nice if things were the opposite of this” kind of things.

“I miss you” is “minulla on ikävä sinua”, I have ikävä towards you. Essentially “I have a hurt, pls come back.” To be homesick is koti-ikävä, just the words “home” and the word for that yearning put together.

This is also very convenient because instead of having to use three words to say "I miss you”, you can just say “ikävä”. If you’re not obviously describing something that is currently present and unpleasant, people will understand you just miss something, someone or some place.

I think that’s nice.
