what up, kids? i ended up going to grad school for counseling. also i graduate this semester. all this to say, maybe things work out but not at all how we planned. i have lived 100 lives since last posting and both nothing and everything has changed. i have kissed dolphins, loved more birds, done science, published papers in big journals, built so many lego sets, loved, grieved, grown. animal friends: jos is well, osky is well, turtlebutt is well, 2 new birds, service dog.

This is my friend Sam. Sam was my friend and lab buddy. She loved giving back to the communities she was a part of and making other people happy. Freshman year, we helped package food to send to Haiti and we would talk about the dogs at the Humane Society after finding out we both went to walk the dogs there. We would do science and talk about science and learn about science. She was so full of love and compassion and she had this way of being able to take you from having a bad day to just laughing at everything that had happened. She would encourage her friends to do things that made them happy with zero judgment.

I wanted to grab a grasshopper we were dissecting with my hands because it felt easier and she encouraged me and laughed along with me as we struggled to get the mandibles, misidentified mouth parts, and finally figured everything out. We went grocery shopping and I wound up with several different types of junk food and she actually helped me reason with myself that this was a good life choice because the oreos were pretty cheap as far as oreos go and the angel food cake was on sale and hey I had a bad week and I totally deserved everything and I had also just gotten a job, so I'd be fine, especially since I put off the ice cream until next time. I mentioned I felt bad for not saying hello to professor we both knew and she took the time to explain to me why it was fine and why I shouldn't worry about it. People keep saying she would have changed the world and she had so much potential and, while I do agree that she would have made a lovely doctor and changed even more lives, I also know she already did change the worlds of many-as a daughter, as a sister, as a friend, as a hokie.

She spent a lot of time volunteering at the Free Clinic of the New River Valley and there is a fundraiser in her honor here for the clinic. I would really appreciate it if you could share this or donate and do something nice for someone else in her honor. Don't forget to be awesome.
